This is what Stand By looks like.

Showed up on another Sunday morning. Standby again. Still enjoy the ferry. While you are waiting, Port Townsend has a bunch of really good eateries near by to snag a bite to eat. Had a few beers in my cooler so sat in the sun and just enjoyed the wait.

lots of room

Washington State knows what they are doing with their ferries and it alleviates a ton of stress for an out-of-towner like myself. If you are visiting from out of state, do your research, and you won't be sorry. Be aware that reservations are absolutely necessary if you are traveling during peak tourist season, as we did, in July for the Lavender Festival in Sequim. If you don't make reservations, you may have to wait several hours before you can even catch one back to Coupeville. Go to the Washington Ferries website - WSDOT and create a free account, then make your reservations well ahead of time. They offer text messaging service to remind you of your sail date and it doesn't get any better than that! The website will also alert you on which days they cannot sail due to low tides, so plan accordingly. Prices are very reasonable and if you are driving a rental car around, its a lot of fun to island-hop. For an adult driver of a standard car and a child passenger, the one way cost was about $22.00.

Took a trip to the San Juan islands by way of ferry system. I suggest booking a reservation online if you are taking a vehicle, limited spaces. Smaller ferry, takes about 30 minutes to get to Coupeville. Plenty of seating, clean bathrooms. Great photo ops can be had!

I took the ferry from Coupeville to Port Townsend and back again at the beginning of November. Firstly, I recommend that you make a reservation if you plan on driving on. I didn't and made it onto the ferry both times, but I did arrive very early to join the line-up. I noticed a few cars that didn't make it and had to wait for the next ferry, an hour and a half later. It's not a big ferry - only space for 64 vehicles. In Coupeville, if you have a car but would like to be a walk-on passenger to not worry about a car while exploring Port Townsend, there is plenty of parking on the side of the road and in a parking area not far from the ferry terminal. It was a very smooth crossing and I love the puzzles on tables dotted around the passenger deck, for anyone to build.

A small but clean ferry, however reservations are a must even on weekdays if you're planning to travel with a car! It's not first come first serve! Remember to bring your own food and drinks because the cafeteria wasn't open during the mornings or early evenings when I rode this ferry.

You have to make a reservation for this ferry to Coupeville so keep that in mind before you get to the terminal. The terminal has restrooms w/ baby changing tables and Wave kiosks. So, if you have to go to the bathroom before you get on the ferry or get a soda or something, this terminal has options. Although you can just get the same items on the ferry. There was no delay on the day I went. I like being able to reserve a spot and just pay half of the fee as a deposit online. It kind of guarantees a spot on the ferry. You just pay the rest when you get to the terminal. Everything is handicap accessible. There are elevators and it's very very clean. The trip lasted about 20-30 minutes I think. I will admit that I had to get out of my car and go walk around and sit in the chairs on deck because it was just something unnatural about the movement of the ferry that made me for the first time kinda woozy as if the beginning stages of seasickness. I really do find ferries amazing. It's so cool that they can get all these people and cars on a floating transporter (semis, U-hauls, luzury cars, bicyclists, pedestrians). I'm glad Washington has such a great transportation system, or at least has options other than using your car all the time.

There the trailer. $90 bucks for the ride and we are 64 feet long total.

I love riding the ferry. We haul our huge rv (30 ft) on and enjoy the ride. From Coupville to Port Townsend it costs us $90 and we are 64 feet long including our truck. I like being able to talk to a live person to help schedule our trip. Great experience

Okay never thought I'd write a review of a ferry but, aside from its practical use, I would have wanted to know: there's actually a decent selection of good and healthy food and snacks on board. And, at a number of the tables, there's this: random jigsaw puzzles. Adorable.

Ferries save time for commuting and they offer an inexpensive route on the Puget Sound for tourists.

This experience was better than my wildest imagination! I booked weeks prior for Thursday May 28th…read more I got there early to check in. The location is on the dock on front street above an ice cream place. The staff is super friendly and appreciated my early arrival. We got a short talk about safety and what to expect. Then we donned suits to keep us warm and dry. Tip: use the hat they offer and gloves. The hood doesn't keep the wind from making your ears cold without holding it tight around your face. I ran to the dock and met Captain BJ who would be working with Allison our guide. The was helpful and allowed me to sit up front. I was more excited than a kid on Christmas morning. The boat starts and we leave the harbor. Then we started going really fast which was so awesome! We saw a sea otter playing in the tide current. There were harbor porpoises. But the steller sea lions were enormous and stunning. They were subbing themselves on the rocks. The piece de resistance was the orcas! A pod of orcas was hunting a lone steller sea lion. We must have sat there over an hour. Other boats gathered and we all watched. I'm not shy in admitting I was deeply moved. I cried a bit at how awesome this experience was and seeing beautiful orcas was on my bucket list. My favorite part was that this is a small business. They are locally owned and have a focus on conservation. The boat pulls water from the ocean to propel itself forward which means no gas, propeller or noisy engine that stresses out whales. We stopped to remove a mylar balloon from the water. I love when people practice what they preach! We continued and saw more eagles, rhiocerous ocelot, and more harbor porpoises. By the end my heart was full. Captain BJ said this was his second favorite trip of the year this far. I beamed all the way back to the office to return our gear. Tip: go to the whale museum when it opens at 11am then come here to see real whales. Do this whale watching tour! Best bang for your buck you will ever get!!

We had amazing opportunities to view a variety of wildlife ranging from bald eagles to otters to several species of whales. The team's knowledge about the whales was truly remarkable- including knowing individual whales' histories. The scenery was spectacular and the gear provided made a chilly spring day extremely comfortable. We can't thank Western Prince Whale Watching enough for this experience that we will look back on and treasure!

Friday Harbor Seaplanes - Flight to Orcas Island

Friday Harbor Seaplanes

I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing experience!! Our Delta airline flights were delayed…read moreby 8 hours and the first day of our trip to Friday Harbor was not what we had expected. We got stuck in Seattle and missed our original transportation by car and ferry but Friday Harbor Seaplanes came to our rescue. Michelle was absolutely amazing and got us booked on the first flight out the following morning so we didn't waste another moment of our trip. She arranged a shuttle to pick us up at the hotel we booked which was also quite the task as many hotels were completely booked up but we finally found one and Friday Harbor Seaplanes accommodated us and got us to the airport and flew us in to Orcas Island. I was really impressed by our pilot and how well he flew the plane. I was a bit nervous and I tend to get motion sickness and he made the flight very enjoyable and even checked in with me during the flight to see how I was feeling. I felt he took slight turns a bit more slow and careful with me in mind and it was very appreciated. My friend also had her baggage delayed by Delta Airlines for 2 days and Michelle was so kind to try and help us by arranging for the airport to deliver the luggage to them so they could bring it to the Friday Harbor dock on one of their daily flights. Unfortunately Delta was being lame and they wouldn't do it, but the fact that Friday Harbor Seaplanes was willing to help us went above and beyond our expectations. What amazing customer service! I hope to one day visit the islands again and without a doubt I will use Friday Harbor Seaplanes again. They treated us like family!! Thank you! I wholeheartedly recommend this business. They are all great people and do an excellent job!

Wow! Just wow! The flights to and from Friday Harbor from their location near Sea Tac were amazing!…read moreWhat a fun way to travel. We were flying low enough to see the scenery of the area including a good look at the Seattle skyline. There were some clouds so the mountain view was not as clear as it would be on a sunny day. Didn't really matter since there was so much else to see. Shane was the pilot both flights and he is very experienced and safety conscious. He also knows a tremendous amount about the area. That was an added bonus. Highly recommend this method of travel!
