Schug House Inn - Common hallway

Schug House Inn

When my fiance and I decided to visit his grandparents in Berne, we figured we'd stay in the guest…read moreroom of their retirement community. However, it was booked, so we had two options of where to stay: Schug House or a hotel. The hotel is newer and was $70+ and Schug House was historic and cost around $45. We thought it would be charming and a great value, and that's what we got! When I made the reservation, the owner was really friendly and helpful. She even gave us permission to invite the grandparents to breakfast! Without charging us! We didn't know what time of night we'd get in, so she said she'd leave directions on the door. We didn't have to worry about being locked out. We found our room, which was full of antiques. The bed was very comfortable and everything was very clean. Most B&Bs don't have spacious rooms because they are in old homes, and this was no exception. But it was just fine for the two of us. We loved the room. The only thing that we didn't like was the window air conditioning, again a throwback to the historic building. It was a little noisy. But the inn was pretty quiet overall. We didn't hear the neighbors. The breakfast was really good! I wasn't expecting that much because we were told that it was fruit, cheese and 3 types of baked goods. It was very filling though. We started with a fruit cup. The baked goods were croissants, a breakfast bread (not sure of the kind), and coffee cake. Fresh and delicious. There was OJ, juice and tea. Also, cereal. The cheese was also yummy. I had a lot of it! Ha! They eat family style here, so be ready to mingle with other guests. Breakfast is served until 10, which is nice if you want to sleep in. Did I mention the great price of this place? I'm still surprised for what we got!! If you're looking for a charming place with friendly owners & workers and a yummy breakfast, make a reservation! My fiance's family said they are going to stay here now whenever they visit because it's not much more than the guest room at the retirement community and has much more charm plus breakfast. We definitely will stay there next year on our annual visit as well!

Holy cow this place is cool. It's a house now divided into 4 suites. We stayed upstairs in the Cole…read morePorter Suite where the music man was born & raised. Don't know who Cole Porter is??never fear, the Miami Museum is a short walk and $3 suggested donation away and they can school u on all things Cole. Our suite was roomy and quiet and filled with antiques & memorabilia. And all the comforts of home--air, kitchenette w microwave & fridge, and a smart TV with Amazon Prime. I recommend Just a short walk to Aroma--try the Lavender Lattee(Oye) ! And the adjacent bakery! Gabriel's has amazing breakfast and Dillinger's was good for dinner. Very responsive folks running it clued us into how to get in the suite. We'll be back !

We spent two nights at the Cole Porter Inn as a little getaway for antiquing and relaxation. We…read morestayed in the Cole Porter Suite, and it was beautiful! Very spacious with lovely furniture and decor. It's probably the antique-est of the three suites in the house. The Cole Porter Suite has a living room, a little kitchenette, a queen bed in the main area, a second bedroom with a double bed, a bathroom, and a sunroom (I've included pictures). The only thing that was a pinch awkward was the hand shower in the bathtub (and no shower curtain). Some antique charm that was definitely a new experience for us, but we figured it out! We were able to contact the proprietor as soon as we arrived, and he instructed us how to get to our room. We could come and go as we pleased. The only down side was feeling a little distant from him should we need things like extra towels, but he was very nice, and I'm sure he would have come running if we'd had a need. No breakfast is included with your stay at the inn, but the kitchenette has a sink, microwave, coffee maker, and coffee, or Peru has a few local breakfast places that will fit the bill (we liked Aroma downtown for coffee and donuts, or go down U.S. 31 about 15 minutes to Dutch Cafe for a hearty breakfast). The inn was also an easy walk to a few local restaurants for dinner, of which I recommend Club 14 and Voodoo Public House. The neighborhood is filled with historic homes of all shapes and sizes, so even just a walk (or drive!) drive around the neighborhoods in that vicinity was great entertainment. We didn't use the TV while we were there, so I guess my only other complaint would be the Wi-Fi. It's free, which is great, but we barely had a signal, so the router must be pretty far from our upstairs room. So if you need to get work done or have amazing internet access, you won't really get it here (at least not upstairs). But if you want a beautiful place to relax and a home base to check out what Northern Indiana has to offer, this is a great one!

My husband and I were fairly set on still getting married on our original day, so with about a week to go, we reached out to Joseph Decuis. And we are SO GLAD that we did -- it was completely different from what we had planned, but we wouldn't have traded it for anything (even our original wedding). We rented their inn for the weekend so that our parents and two siblings could be there. The inn is absolutely beautiful! they have stayed true to the history of the home with their decor and it was gorgeous. Diane took amazing care of us, meeting every need and truly going above and beyond for us. She made us breakfast each morning and everything was delicious. They don't have a TV, so it forced us to be very present with each other and enjoy the outdoors while we were visiting. All of the bedrooms were beautiful and comfortable, the bathrooms were updated and quite large! We loved our tour of the expansive and beautiful grounds, seeing all of their animals, gardens, and the many farm buildings. Then the day of the wedding -- they did more for us than I could have dreamed possible! It felt like they personally wanted to give us a fairytale wedding. I rode to the ceremony in an elegant, white horse-drawn carriage to the spot we had chosen while on our tour -- they had showed us many possibilities along the way. Throughout the day, they took videos and photos so that we would have lots of memories of our day. The owner of the farm drove my husband, our photographer, and I around on a golf cart so that we could take photos in many different places. The food throughout our stay was amazing. The steak and lasagna were both incredible, with their wagyu beef. We also had the pork chops, which were just okay. All of the sides were delicious though -- salad, mashed potatoes, etc. I truly cannot say enough kind things about all of the staff and the property. They took a disaster and turned it into a dream come true -- all with about a week's notice! We can't wait to go back!
