Chaplee wrap
John H.

We spotted this place passing by and stopped in here for a quick lunch. We are glad we did. Our intention was to grab and go but the place was so inviting we decided to eat in. They offer a complimentary hot tea which in itself was very good. We both had a Chaplee kabob wrap which is spicy minced beef kabob in a thin bread wrapper. They asked what level of spice we wanted and we decided on hot - which had some real heat but wasn't too hot. Wow these were great. Super tasty well spiced beef, hot off the grill, with some crunchy accompanying veg. The wrapper had just enough elasticity to hold it all together. It came with a creamy minty sauce and a fresh tomato salsa as little side dips. It was just delicious. With the aforementioned tea to go with it, this wrap was perfection. Can't wait to go back again and try all the other delicious stuff on the extensive menu. Yum!

Large dine-in area

As a vegetarian and vegan family, this is the most unusual place to go, but we did. The people on the counter were knowledgeable and answered our questions as to which had meat products and dairy or eggs in some items. Ordered a veggie wrap, a bolani (Flat Grilled Bread stufffed with potatoes), Dough ( a yogurt drink similar to the salty Indian lassi) and a side order of fries. The veggie wrap was simple with no spice, just seasoned with salt and pepper. The flat bread wrap fresh and delicious. The Bolani was again freshly made with loads of potatoes and grilled. A bit oily but delicious and would definitely order again with the request of using less oil. The accompanying salsa type dip was good. Tomatoes with onions and a bit of spice. The yogurt drink with mint was OK and a bit watered down for the Mrs. a good choice on a hot day. The side order of fries was huge and more like a family size. Perfectly fried and seasoned and crisp on the outside and soft inside. The wrap, bolani and fries were made vegan. So all in all a good visit.

If you are into Afghan food, you should definitely try this place out. I've been here twice and both times were excellent! I had the fish tandoori on my first visit which was a huge slab of sea bass with tandoori spices and the the chicken tandoori on the second visit. Both tasted great but if I had to pick, I would choose the chicken tandoori. I always get their dinner portion which comes with rice and salad and a naan bread on the side. They give you 2 types of sauces to go with your meal which added the extra flavors. If I have a complaint, it would be their naan bread. It's big and all but a little hard for my liking. Overall, the service was quick and portions are huge! Will definitely come back!

Beef Tikka Kabob Dinner (take-out)

Delicious food with large portions and at a reasonable price - is what defines Watan Kabob. I had the Beef Tikka Kabob and it was such a satisfactory experience (despite takeout). The box was loaded with juicy meats and plenty of salads. The large Afghan naan was a perfect complement along with the sauces and meats. There are so many things in the plate that you can get a different experience in every bite. Price was acceptable, and trust me, you will be full or won't be able to finish because the quantity is plenty. The store is in a fast-casual setting. You can feel free to dine in or take out. The store interior is pretty nice too. I will definitely come back again!

Braised lamb shank dinner, best dish of the house
Mel H.

I love middle eastern food, and Watan is one of two places (apart from Bamiyan) that I frequent at least once a month. The star dish for this place is their slow braised lamb shank and stewed raisin/carrot topping on top of basmati rice. The shank is always tender, and always a delight. The rest of the grilled meat dishes, though, are usually overcooked. It's quite a waste to have tenderloin or lamb chops cooked to well-done stage such that they are no longer succulent or tender. In terms of marinate, I find Bamiyan does it better. Fish dishes are forgettable. Portions are very decent, although wait times can be half an hour or more, even if it is not a full house.

Watan Kabob is an Afghani restaurant located in Mississauga, Ontario that serves 100% Halal Afghani dishes ranging from kabobs to tandoori chicken to fresh fish. Their recently opened second location is located at the corner of Winston Churchill Blvd and Dundas St W which straddles the border of Mississauga and Oakville. I have been to their original Matheson Blvd location quite a few times but was happy to hear they opened a new location hoping that the second location wouldn't be as busy and hectic. I went on a recent Friday night and decided to go with my normal order of a Wazeri Kabob dinner ($13.99 plus tax) which consists of 1 skewer of a chicken breast kabob, 1 skewer of a kofta kabob, basmati rice, a salad and fresh naan bread. The chicken breast kabob and kofta kabob were perfectly cooked and seasoned, tender and juicy. The basmati rice was nice and fluffy, the salad was fresh and the naan bread was right out of the oven. The new location has a more upscale decor and can accommodate larger groups. At the same time because the new location can accommodate large groups, it's as busy if not busier than their original location around dinner time. Overall, Watan Kabob is a really good choice if you are looking for delicious authentic Afghani food that is reasonably priced and really well executed.

Wazeri combo: chicken, kofta, salad, and naan (not shown).

Great food and value! It's an Afghan grill house that specializes in skewered meats. It's a casual place where you order and pay first, choose wherever you want to sit, then wait for your order number to be featured on a video screen for pick-up (similar to McDonald's). On an early Sunday evening (7pm), it was not too busy, but we still had about 10 order numbers ahead of us until we received our order. The staff are friendly and efficient. The kabobs options include chicken, beef, lamb, and fish with salad, and an option of naan or rice. The Wazeri comes with chicken and kofta (ground beef and lamb with spices). We also ordered a side of lamb shank side ($7.99), and doogh, a light yogurt-cucumber drink with herbs. It was generally quite salty, but it went well with the naan bread and the salad. The chicken was flavourful and juicy, and was the highlight of the three meats we tried. The doogh was also a refreshing drink to have along with the meat! The washrooms need a bit of work, but the restaurant is good for groups and families.

I placed an order for pick up i told the lady that i wanted two dinner meals with tandoori chicken and kebab, everything seemed just fine. Picked up my order 15minutes later and when i was paying for my order i asked the lady for some extra sauce with the meals and she rudely says "NO, IT'S 50 CENTS EXTRA. I said since when do you charge extra for sauce and she points right at this make shift sign that states "extra 50 cents for sauce". Ofcourse i didnt pay for extra sauce!! Why should i? I mean all the other locations give the sauces free of charge. FYI: THE SAUCES PROVIDED WITH YOUR MEAL IS ONLY FILLED HALF WAY, UNBELIEVABLE!! Anyhow my experience doesnt end there, i got back to my place and opened up the meals and seen she only gaved me tandoori chicken without the kebabs. I immediately phoned the restaurant back and spoke to same lady that took my order and i told her, hey you only gave me tandoori chicken when i clearly asked for kebab as well. Now, was i charged extra and just got ripped off? Because tandoori chicken meals cost less She says she didnt charge me extra, she only charged me for the "tandoori chicken meals" but whats odd is the amount didnt add up to two meals of tandoori chicken, it was more!! Her response to the missing kebabs was SORRY I FORGOT and thats it WOOOOOOOOOW!! so i asked what are you going to do now? are you going to make the kebabs since they are clearly missing.. she says: nono sorry. 1. She didnt offer to make the meal correctly and for me to come back. 2. She wasnt honest that she indeed charged me for tandoori chicken and kebab. -instead i was given tandoori chicken meals. Never again. Worst customer service. "She forgot" aka deal with it. Take your money else where!!

Food wise not so great either. Wasn't given any sauce for the salad to eat with. Had to ask for a dressing because I saw someone got one without asking. Food was quite dry. Dumplings were not to my taste at all unfortunately. The skin was falling apart not in a good way. So mouchy. Didn't taste any good. Maybe not to my liking, make your own judgement yourself

Also make sure you sub out the regular white rice for the Kabuli rice, it makes the meal 10 times better. I left very satisfied. The owner was very nice and service was as expected. They were under some renovations at the time so the ambiance might not be the same now. The location is in a plaza so lots of parking is available. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal and I would probably come back more often if it was more affordable.

The restaurant itself was quite small, with only a handful of tables and a few booths. It felt quaint, with cultural decor on the walls and music playing on the speakers. I had settled on the pork kebab with rice, salad, and naan. My husband had decided on the mixed grill, which included chicken and beef, along with salad, rice, and naan. We only had to wait about ten minutes before our meals were brought to our table by the kind server that had taken our orders earlier. The food was absolutely amazing! The pork was very tender, and the salad had a nice flavour to it, especially when mixed with the rice. The naan was a great addition, as I ate it with the dipping sauces that were given on the side. The food was abundant; I didn't even finish my dish as it was too much. My husband agreed that his meal was also delicious, and well-worth the price. Would definitely return and will recommend to others!
