They also have other sides like mantu - didn't have space to try those this time. Their bolani is also pretty fire. Been to two locations; Dundas & Winston Churchill and the one at Matheson and Highway 10. The Dundas & Winston Churchill location is always busy, no matter what time of day!! They're pumping out food on the regular but not able to catch up with cleaning trays and dishes. Tables sometimes require wiping down. Have eaten here a number of times with other people and by myself. Normally I order tandoori chicken, salad and naan but on occasion will have something else. More recently I ate sultani with salad and naan. I really like the salad, fresh bread and sauces. Unfortunately the ground beef skewer contained quite a bit of fat and was not as lean as I was hoping. Most cuts of beef were lean and tender with a few pieces that were not. Chicken breast is usually lean with good flavour. Meats taste better the day of rather than the following day. It would be ideal if they offered half the amount of meat with a combo because it's too much sometimes, or mantoo as a combo instead of its own separate dish. The Matheson location is my preferred spot as it's not as busy. However, the women's washroom is usually in disarray, unlike the Dundas & Winston Churchill location, which is more kempt. Both locations have good service and helpful staff. The style of the eatery is order & pay first, then come collect your food once you see your number on the screen. Gives it a feel for a cafeteria style. Extra sauce is available if you ask and water is provided free of charge. You help yourself. read more

We spotted this place passing by and stopped in here for a quick lunch. We are glad we did. Our intention was to grab and go but the place was so inviting we decided to eat in. They offer a complimentary hot tea which in itself was very good. We both had a Chaplee kabob wrap which is spicy minced beef kabob in a thin bread wrapper. They asked what level of spice we wanted and we decided on hot - which had some real heat but wasn't too hot. Wow these were great. Super tasty well spiced beef, hot off the grill, with some crunchy accompanying veg. The wrapper had just enough elasticity to hold it all together. It came with a creamy minty sauce and a fresh tomato salsa as little side dips. It was just delicious. With the aforementioned tea to go with it, this wrap was perfection. While at McD, we did a scan of local restaurants and noticed this one was nearby. We went in screening was done by security. It was a bit weird, we displayed the vaccination and he just wanted to see Id. Well were vaccinated. There are about 15 items available for options with description of each item and ample of seating. Order items, pay and wait for your number to be called. They even serve baklava, I asked if it was made in house they said yes. It was 5 pieces for $7.50 (pricey in my opinion. Ordered the chicken snd beef and lamb shank dinner. I also ordered the sea bass take out. The mests were done very well, you can ask for a pitcher kf water if you want water. The portion sizes were okay, lots of rice though. If you have a small stomach order with the salad and naan. The sea bass was not good, the seasoning was off. Following Johnny's Tip on Yelp, the first does take a long time -I did not feel it was worth the wait. They dont know how to cook fish here, the first was a mess of spices that didn't work. The seating is a fancy cafeteria style. The washrooms were poorly managed, I was in the female washroom and one sink was clogged and the other working. Overall for the price, I think I can consider this a hidden gem. (Just a note, about 24 hours after eating at this establishment, myself and my food companion were experiencing food poisoning symptoms. We strongly believe between the no alcohol sport bar bite, the mcd liquid order and this place, it was possibly this location. We also noticed when staff was getting more styrofoam takeout containers from the back they were still wearing the same food serving gloves and continued food serving -very likely handwashing is not done frequently enough here. The people on the counter were knowledgeable and answered our questions as to which had meat products and dairy or eggs in some items. Ordered a veggie wrap, a bolani (Flat Grilled Bread stufffed with potatoes), Dough ( a yogurt drink similar to the salty Indian lassi) and a side order of fries. The veggie wrap was simple with no spice, just seasoned with salt and pepper. The flat bread wrap fresh and delicious. The Bolani was again freshly made with loads of potatoes and grilled. A bit oily but delicious and would definitely order again with the request of using less oil. The accompanying salsa type dip was good. Tomatoes with onions and a bit of spice. The yogurt drink with mint was OK and a bit watered down for the Mrs. a good choice on a hot day. The side order of fries was huge and more like a family size. If you are into Afghan food, you should definitely try this place out. I've been here twice and both times were excellent! I had the fish tandoori on my first visit which was a huge slab of sea bass with tandoori spices and the the chicken tandoori on the second visit. Both tasted great but if I had to pick, I would choose the chicken tandoori. I always get their dinner portion which comes with rice and salad and a naan bread on the side. They give you 2 types of sauces to go with your meal which added the extra flavors. If I have a complaint, it would be their naan bread. It's big and all but a little hard for my liking. I love middle eastern food, and Watan is one of two places (apart from Bamiyan) that I frequent at least once a month. The star dish for this place is their slow braised lamb shank and stewed raisin/carrot topping on top of basmati rice. The shank is always tender, and always a delight. The rest of the grilled meat dishes, though, are usually overcooked. It's quite a waste to have tenderloin or lamb chops cooked to well-done stage such that they are no longer succulent or tender. In terms of marinate, I find Bamiyan does it better. Fish dishes are forgettable. Portions are very decent, although wait times can be half an hour or more, even if it is not a full house. read more

Their recently opened second location is located at the corner of Winston Churchill Blvd and Dundas St W which straddles the border of Mississauga and Oakville. I have been to their original Matheson Blvd location quite a few times but was happy to hear they opened a new location hoping that the second location wouldn't be as busy and hectic. I went on a recent Friday night and decided to go with my normal order of a Wazeri Kabob dinner ($13.99 plus tax) which consists of 1 skewer of a chicken breast kabob, 1 skewer of a kofta kabob, basmati rice, a salad and fresh naan bread. The chicken breast kabob and kofta kabob were perfectly cooked and seasoned, tender and juicy. The basmati rice was nice and fluffy, the salad was fresh and the naan bread was right out of the oven. The new location has a more upscale decor and can accommodate larger groups. At the same time because the new location can accommodate large groups, it's as busy if not busier than their original location around dinner time. Overall, Watan Kabob is a really good choice if you are looking for delicious authentic Afghani food that is reasonably priced and really well executed. read more

Great food and value! It's an Afghan grill house that specializes in skewered meats. It's a casual place where you order and pay first, choose wherever you want to sit, then wait for your order number to be featured on a video screen for pick-up (similar to McDonald's). On an early Sunday evening (7pm), it was not too busy, but we still had about 10 order numbers ahead of us until we received our order. The staff are friendly and efficient. The kabobs options include chicken, beef, lamb, and fish with salad, and an option of naan or rice. The Wazeri comes with chicken and kofta (ground beef and lamb with spices). We also ordered a side of lamb shank side ($7.99), and doogh, a light yogurt-cucumber drink with herbs. It was generally quite salty, but it went well with the naan bread and the salad. The chicken was flavourful and juicy, and was the highlight of the three meats we tried. The doogh was also a refreshing drink to have along with the meat! Busy place on a Saturday night. We ordered the Lamb chops and the kofta and tandoori chicken combo... Seating can be a challenge especially for large groups. It's very busy with one group that literally occupied an entire row of 20 seats. Order up front and grab a seat or vice versa depending if you want to gamble. Food came out reasonably quickly. The ticket numbers are broadcast on a tv screen so you know when to go up and get your own order. All the food was tasty although the kofta and tandoori chicken were better than the lamb. It feels a bit rushed as the experience is akin to finding parking at Costco where you have people scoping out your seats while you're still eating and waiting close by for you to finish so they can swoop in. read more

Used to be my favorite restaurant. Customer service is amazing but the quality of the ground beef in the kebobs and Chaplin Kebob basically all there ground beef is so bad. It is full of fat. Hard fat that can't be chewed. Sometimes you even get the odd little bone that will break your tooth. I wish they would have kept the quality good as they are doing so well. Sad to see the decline in food quality. Also prices getting too high. read more

I love their food! I've never actually dined in, usually take out. Their tandoori chicken wrap is really good! They don't use the typical naan bread for the wrap, kind of reminds me of roti, it's delicious! The only thing with the wraps is the sauces tend to go towards one end of the wrap so you don't really get to taste the sauce until you're almost done - maybe spread out the sauces? I'm sure it drains down towards the bottom if they're held up right. Their Chapli kebab and afghani bread are really good as well. Rice is so amazing with the spices. Let's start with the food I ordered the chicken and meat kabobs with salad and there nan type bread this place you have to pay at counter then your food comes out ....let's just say that it was me and only another couple and I waited about 20 minutes for my food to come out...I don't know how they can be so slow at lunch hour when I counted about 16 people working in back kitchen ..the portion that came out was large for sure and well worth the $13.00 for the amount of food you get, but both the chicken and meat were extremely over cooked and dry the salad was dry with hardly any dressing on it could not even taste the dressing on salad , I would never go back to this place again for the poorest customer service and food quality was way below poor read more

This location is new. And wow it will be around a while. The location at dundas and Winston Churchill has been a plague area for restaurants. Countless restaurants have fallen to the traffic of the area. But Watan Kabab was so busy, not only was there zero parking. But the order I called in was ready for pick up after just over an hour. We ordered the mantoo to starts. Large dumplings in a wonderful sauce. The lentils were cooked perfectly. The chicken and beef kababs were perfectly spiced and cooked. It wasn't spicy. But the spices were lovely. The tandoori chicken was also lovely flavoured. And a bit spicy on the tongue. The rice was perfect. It's even better with raisins and carrots on top (if you like that kind of thing). The chaplee is huge. Come hungry. And the firnee was sweet and soft. A nice compliment to the meal. Food is just fine; however very outer hall is specially very congested. Also the place is extremely dirty, trash all over on the floor, tables and everywhere you can imagine. Similarly washrooms were horribly disgusting, soap containers were empty and no napkins.
