My family had an extremely disturbing experience at this facility, to the point that we filed a…read morecomplaint with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. If I could give zero stars I would. My mother, who suffers from MS, COPD, and end-stage coronary heart disease, was sent here for rehabilitation and stayed for only one night due to the level of neglect she experienced. During her first night, I was on the phone with her when she began having significant difficulty breathing. While I remained on the phone, she repeatedly pressed the call button for assistance, but no staff member responded. She then began calling out for help multiple times and was still ignored. I personally attempted to contact the nurses' station and spent over an hour repeatedly calling with no answer. The facility's phones also appear to shut off after a certain hour, making it nearly impossible to reach anyone in an emergency situation. As my mother's condition worsened, she became terrified and believed she was going to die. All I could hear over the phone was her crying out for help while no one came to assist her. Ultimately, my mother had to call an ambulance herself. When EMS arrived, staff allegedly attempted to prevent them from entering and dismissed my mother's medical distress as though she was overreacting. After being transported to the hospital, doctors discovered she had a massive fluid buildup around her heart, which was causing her severe breathing difficulties. Had she not advocated for herself and called 911, the outcome could have been tragic. Based on our experience, this facility demonstrated a shocking lack of urgency, compassion, and medical responsiveness toward a critically ill patient. Families considering this facility should thoroughly research and proceed with caution. The staff's negligence and incompetence nearly resulted in my mother losing her life.

However, the staff treated my mother with care and looked after her needs. They dressed her in the morning, brought her ice and water, brought her meals to the room (by request), and were always friendly doing so. If I asked them to look in on her, overnight, they agreed enthusiastically. Meds were distributed at the appropriate times. Physical Therapy was daily or twice daily. The therapists were friendly, encouraging, and thorough. There were daily events, such as bingo, 'bowling,' and music events. Food was mediocre at best. This is the one area that can easily use improvement. As also mentioned, my mother's hearing aids disappeared, and only one re-appeared a few days later (UPDATE: One month later I received a call that the hearing aid was found. Thank You Dana!). My mother received a nice blanket, as a Christmas gift, from Whitestone. After a 13-day stay, release was on New Years Eve day. There *was* a slight mix up, as it seems the folks on duty weren't expecting her release. But, after a short wait, and some calls, we moved on. Whitestone arranged for my mother's continued, at home, physical therapy, and have checked in on her progress. Hats off to the employees here. It's a thankless job. They do it. In these type situations, it's easy to find things to criticize. Whitestone impressed me, when I was expecting very little. Thanks to you all!

Embark at the Poconos saved my daughter's life…read more After months and months of other programs (inpatient stays, PHP's, IOP, outpatient therapy...), with several ER visits and two attempts to take her own life, the team in the Poconos was able to reach into her heart and mind, past all the darkness and fear and lies she was telling herself to get her to see a sliver of the light and realize she WAS loved and WAS lovable. Her Dad and I and many other therapists tried to tell her and show her these things, but the combination of the house environment (the structure), the team members and the approach at Embark was what she needed to feel safe enough to open up. And when those flood gates opened, we all went on a ride to dark places but we needed to, and she was in a safe place to do so, mentally and physically. At the house, there were strict rules about sleep times, daily hygiene, chores, meal times, phone calls home, healthy food options, and school time, on top of the individual and family therapy. Therapy will look different for every child and family, but know that the staff is highly trained, approachable, compassionate, and will enforce a safe environment for all during sessions. outings were a fun way to reward the girls for their hard work. Medications were handled by a wonderful medical staff in a safe and consistent manner. Meals were prepared by an in-house chef. Life coaches monitored and supervised for everyone's safety. Expectations were clearly set upon arrival and consequences were upheld as needed. In addition to the Embark team counseling your child, they bring the family into therapy. Even after your child leaves the house, you have contact with the team and they do all they can to smoothly transition you into your next treatment program, whatever that may be. As past or current parents of children at Embark, we also get to meet virtually twice each month for a Parent Support Group. There is a community of families being beaten down by mental illness right now in our world, and most of the members are in hiding, ashamed and with no idea how to get help. THIS is one way to get help for your child and your family. You are not alone, you are loved, your are worthy, and IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT. Take that step. Trust. Heal.
