I refuse to become sedentary in my retired years; but I also recognize there are better alternatives to deal with the natural effects of age while maintaining an active lifestyle. I will be 70 years old this year and enter my 24th season as a high school football official. As one may expect, maintaining physical ability is important in keeping the kids safe and the games fair. Working with Sarah has been a truly transformational experience for me. I found Sarah through a one hour workshop that changed my life. I have dealt with anxiety for as long as I can remember. I have been in therapy, taken antidepressants and was at a point I felt I needed to seek some form of treatment again. After taking her Yoga Nidra workshop, I knew I had found someone who could help me manage my anxiety in ways that would create lifelong changes. I have a yoga background and knew of yoga therapy. I wrongly assumed it was only for those who had a physical injury. What I hadn't considered was the effect anxiety has had on my body over time. We started with basics of breathing correctly and having me "open up" my shoulders. Since I was like a "raw nerve", always tense in my whole body, Sarah had to teach me (baby-steps) how to breathe the right way and keep my posture in the right position and relax my body. I have been in so much pain for so long that I couldn't allow my body to relax for the fear of hurting even more. Ms. Cummins, with her perfectly calm voice, walked me through how to teach my body to relax. My knees are a mess and so are my ankles (yes, besides the lower back and sciatica). At the Waterfall Yoga I was taught how to handle the pain and also strengthen my muscles in the right places in order to help my pain. I have always heard of yoga but never thought it was for me. I wasn't interested in seeing if I could keep up with a fast paced instructor. After years of chronic pain Sarah Cummins talked me into trying a pain control yoga series, one of her many specialties. It was a surprise to learn that intense concentration on breath work, balance, flexibility, strength and meditation really will reduce pain. It works in class and any other time pain intrudes on everyday living. It starts with visualizing the location of the pain, breathing to replenish the location with oxygen, concentration on a location of the body without pain, doing some mild exercises and followed by a period of meditation. I am a full time hospice nurse and heard about Sarah from a friend & former yoga instructor. I started taking zoom classes with her to help relieve stress & have gotten so much more. She is very patient and always offers alternate poses or activity to accommodate injuries, etc. I have learned from Sarah how to focus my breath and expand my lungs more than ever, which is essential for a health care worker during this pandemic. I chose Waterfall Yoga (Sarah Cummins) for 5 sessions of Grief therapy to help me with my grief of 2 losses within 6 months 2 years ago. I've struggled with self-esteem, depression, loneliness, and every emption you can think of. It took me a year and a half to decide to see someone. I lost my daughter do to a Dr. error so needless to say I don't go to a Dr. Sarah is very professional, sincere, and knowledgeable about what she is doing. I I can't even express how awesome Sarah is, I attended a mini retreat this past weekend and it was amazing. It definitely took me to a different level of a yoga experience. I am a beginner yoga instructor myself and all I can say is that I learned a new way of Yoga.
