Last night's was a Joaquin Phoenix double bill, showing Walk The Line followed by Two Lovers. While we ended up skipping the first film and just having dinner, the price is still very reasonable. We shared a lovely bottle of wine outside on the terrace (had to sit on the wall though as all the tables were full) with amazing views of the river and Hammersmith Bridge. Back inside for dinner, which we shared: a large mezze platter and some mushroom bruschetta, both of which were delicious and just enough. The cinema itself is what every cinema should be: small and dark, with the seats on an incline so everyone can see. They showed the previews and ads WAY before the start time (PERFECT!!), even drew the curtains in between the previews and the film itself (DRAMATIC!!). Riverside has much more to offer than just a restaurant and a cinema... it also shows stand-up comedy, has a fully functioning tv studio where they film live shows, a theatre for live music, and art exhibitions. A wonderful space with quality at every turn.

What I found was the exact opposite, a disgrace to the fine art world. I could literally go on and on about the failures of this school, but instead I'll just summarize the key issues I have 1. no structure, no pressure, no expectation results in little to no production of artwork. The school seems to advertise a pride in the independence it provides its artist with but it fails to really make clear that literally anyone can pass with out ever showing up. As a matter fact, the faulty are so lazy that they don't even bother to show up on time for literally anything. They don't enforce rules and they don't understand their students. There are no assignments, no expectations and no structure. 2. The cleanliness of the place is repulsive, the facilities are horrid, they are not up to date of creative materials and machines for making. The students disrespect their peers work spaces and they disrespect the building as a whole. they literally believe that they own the place, that they can make it just as filthy as their drugged up lifestyle. 3. There is no learning, no educating and no positive actual encouragement If a student were to draw a stick figure on their Starbucks coffee cup, a faculty member passing by would literally just be like " that's fantastic, you're so creative, be yourself and keep up the good work" This is not a place for anyone who truely cares about art and wants to further educate themselves on art making, the art market, art and even just understanding how to be an adult and behave responsibly in this world. This is a place to go If you have a lot of money and want to paint a couple abstract paintings that resemble American expressionism of the 1940s. In the front is a space that is used for shows by alumni of the college and the college itself is contained to three buildings joined by corridors and bridges. It's a nice place to be and work, although the current SU bar is just a bar at the back of the canteen, there's nothing to really distinguish it as a bar. No nights or music goes on here as of yet, but there may well be in the future once the bar facilities are sorted out.

I have considered studying here and even went to the open day recently but I wasn't really impressed with the layout and what they had to offer. In a few years they are moving to a bigger campus in Kings Cross which is a shame as it's currently in a great location in central London. They have a plaque on the wall at the reception stating that the Rolling Stones played here in 1970 something, Perhaps it was a more happening place back then.

That aside, yes, I currently attend CSM and am finding it to be everything I expected and more. I'm working on my Masters. The learning opportunities at the college seem to be almost boundless. The course leaders have been exceptionally supportive, and their continuing experience in their fields strengthens their obvious, relevant expertise. All of which, they bring into the classroom in a genuinely compelling way. I'm getting to know the other students in my programme, which has been going well. It's a diverse group! Conversations and group work has been interesting and often fun. How will I feel by the end of this year? Who knows? But so far I'm appreciating my time there and want to make the most of it.

Classical Indian music and dance lessons are available here. At the weekends for about two hours they have a reasonably priced cafe which I am yet to try and an art gallery space upstairs which I believe can be hired. South Asian language classes are also available. A few weeks later they invited me to join them for Indian Independence Day celebrations where the students performed and the Indian High Commissioner to London gave an excellent speech.

But Angela Malik's shop and cookery school seems to fit the bill. The shop itself is stuffed full of intriguing titbits, yumsies and quirky ingredients all designed to persuade you to get out your wallet - and then there's the kitchen just behind the shop, which simultaneously looks industrial and welcoming. The chefs on hand - Angela, Geoff, George - were all incredibly friendly in guiding us through the mysteries of the kitchen, what goes into making the taste sensation of the tongue and of course top quick tips for cooking. Don't overcook pork. I was there thanks to Qype for a session on how to make dim sum - I'd had some prior experience from my Dad - but the expert knowledge and guidance from Angela's team created much tastier dim sum while still somehow retaining that home-cooked feel. We also had some samples of her delicious range of Indian pestos - I haven't been a huge fan of 'Indian' food up till now but I might just have to explore the true Indian palette in a bit more detail. Now I just need to pop back to get some more ... groceries...
