My wife and I took our weim Aiden to Dr. Shankin after another local vet messed up taking an abscess out of his shoulder. Aiden had popped one of his stiches on the Sunday following his surgery and the vet office that performed the operation told us to take him to Portsmouth Animal Hospital because they weren't open on Sunday. Needless to say my wife and I were very upset with them and we ended up calling Dr. Shankin after a friend recommended him. Although he wasn't open on Sunday either he told us to bring Aiden right in! That was the start of the long relationship that we still have today. I'll spare you all the details but I will say that Dr. Shankin has gone out of his way to make sure Aiden can lead a happy and healthy life. Dr. Shankin fixed the botched abscess removal, performed 2 leg surgeries, and helped us rehab Aiden's leg all within the first year we owned the dog. Countless appointments and phone calls on weekends and at all hours. We owe a lot to Dr. Shankin. Aiden is 3 now and very healthy so the only time we get to see Dr. Shankin is for an annual check up but every time we walk in the door everyone in his office is always excited to see Aiden doing so well! If you are looking for a vet that you can trust you can stop your search now. Michael Shankin is top notch and not only helped Aiden through everything he helped two recent college graduates with an unhealthy dog make educated decisions and he made everything affordable.

FAH has been our vet clinic since we moved to the area 11 years ago. More than once in emergency…read moresituations we've been glad they're less than 10 minutes from our house, because until a few years ago, the closest emergency clinic was more than half an hour away. Dr. Audrey Karamourtopoulos (she goes by Dr. Audrey for obvious reasons) is the clinic owner and our primary vet. For the longest time she was the only vet there, but over the years other vets have been brought on staff. Dr. Audrey has been a wonderful caretaker for our dogs, and even the occasional foster. She will sit on the floor with a dog and let them give her a facial while she tries to conduct an exam. She is one of the most compassionate people I've ever met. Some people like a vet who is all business, others like the heart-on-sleeve kind. Dr. Audrey is a little bit of both, but leans more towards the latter. Easy to tears, this lady, even more than me. I'm okay with that, I don't feel silly getting sniffly in front of her, or on the phone. She usually beats me to it. She's a skilled surgeon too. She saved the life of our first Rottweiler, who was bloating, which is a life threatening condition. Carl would have died enroute to an ER clinic, but fortunately FAH was open. He recovered really well. We had to go out of town a couple weeks later and did medical board at the clinic just to be sure he had around the clock attention. Because the clinic is attached to Dr. Audrey's home, she is available at all hours. She sat up with our neighbor's dog at 2am while he died in her arms from hemangiosarcoma. FAH has techs on staff 24/7. Unlike some other clinics where animals might be left alone overnight. FAH also does rescues, mostly cats, but occasionally dogs that might be strays and owners not located, or the animals have been surrendered to the clinic. Dr. Audrey is the vet for a local Doberman Pinscher rescue. Like a lot of vets, she's not an advocate for raw feeding. She will try and point out some of what she feels are negatives, but won't try to stop you outright. It's your dog, not hers. We've agreed to disagree, though she has admitted that my dogs are pretty darned healthy overall (even our cancer boy is still on part raw/part kibble and doing great) and have gorgeous coats. Argo came to us with teeth so covered in plaque you could barely see the cusps. No dental done, just some manual scraping to remove the large chunks by a hygienst and a raw diet have really cleaned his teeth up. Dr. Audrey doesn't try to overvaccinate your pets either. She was actually the first person to tell me about titers (blood test to determine antibody levels) when we first met and had a senior dog. Other than rabies, we didn't need to be pumping the poor creature full of the damned things. She often runs late, because she doesn't rush through appointments. Not every situation can be handled in 15 minutes. I may wait an hour to see her, and I'm okay with that. Just take my dog outside for a walk; girls at the front desk will call me in when it's time. Dr. Audrey will spend as much time as you need her to, especially if there are a lot of questions coming up. Lately we've had some communication issues, having to wait longer than I thought was appropriate for a return call on something, but that seems to have been a short lived issue. Hasn't happened again. Drs. Baker and Stephanie are the other current DVMs on staff. Haven't worked much with Dr. Stephanie, but she is more of a small/exotic animal and bird vet. Dr. Baker is a nice gentleman, little more of the reserved, old school type vet. Dr. Audrey was out of town at the time Argo presented with a recurring limp; Dr. Baker caught his bone cancer early. We will be forever grateful for that, as it's given us more time to try different treatments and kept him with us longer than most people get in this situation. He also did a nice job pulling over 200 baby porcupine quills (they're small, soft and hard to find!) from Hannahbelle's feet and mouth recently. Don't ask... She's lucky she's cute!

The contrast between the consistently exceptional service at my vet including yesterday in my…read morecurrent area and my horrific experiences at Newburyport Animal Hospital years ago has promoted to speak out about the PTSD at the latter. I only am writing this review so many years later because the website shows that Dr. Grillo still owns and operates the place.There is nothing to indicate that things have changed. My first experiences at Newbury were awesome on every level. I attribute the change to the large expansion a few years later. My perspective ties to my partner and I regularly joking about one of the "Facts of Life" stars calling a co-star a "greedy b----" when the covert effort of the latter to make a side deal tanked a reboot that otherwise would have been a sure thing. I had been happy with the care that I had been receiving and thought that Dr. Grillo and I had been on friendly terms. I noted that he both went to the home of my friends to put down their greyhound when the time had come and did not charge them. The story with my cat, who had been a patient for years, began with Grillo initially strongly believing that he was not ill and only discovering the kidney disease when I politely kept pushing the issue. Grillo did apologize. The regular expensive treatment continued for months. Grillo knew that my cat was like my child when he made me bring him in when the time came. He also was not very compassionate and charged me. The next incident came a few years later. A previously awesome cat sitter had traumatized my cats (including bringing a black lab contrary to my request to not do so and a completely unknown infant) into my house while sitting for 10 days. One of my two cats increasingly became aggressive despite my continuing to be as loving to him as I always had been. He eventually became feral, and I only got him out of my house by finding a wildlife expert willing to there and capture him. He refused the money that I repeatedly offered him. I had the expert bring my cat to Newbury as the next step. Grillo told me that the cat was well-behaved there and totally discounted my experience as well as my trauma regarding the whole manner. He was very judgmental regarding my refusal to both risk bringing that greatly loved cat back in my house and facing having to again find someone to capture him if he went nuts again as I was certain that he would. Despite Grillo knowing for years that I was a loving pawrent who had spent thousands during the extended illness of my first cat, he strongly implied that I had been abusing the cat that I literally was in tears over losing. The local animal rescue league absolutely refusing to take the cat resulted in my having to abandon him. Grillo pulled a full Blair by charging me for the couple of days that my cat had stayed with him. I had been a profitable client for years, and I doubt that keeping the cat cost Grillo more than a little food. I may even have sent some food with him. I considered refusing to pay and just walk away but wanted my other cat to continue being a client because the underlying care had been good. All of this concluded with a horrible experience when I was moving 90 minutes away. I boarded my cat with Newbury a few days before my move. My partner was going to pick him up on the day of the move to drive him to our new home. I paid for the stay when I dropped off my cat. I made it clear that I was doing so so that my partner would not need to pay when he came for the cat. I further paid what I thought was an unduly high amount to sedate my cat the morning of the move both to reduce the stress in him and so my partner would not have to deal with constant caterwauling on the drive to the new house. My partner called me from his cell while I was in the middle of the two teams of movers incessantly asking me where stuff went despite it being clear. (I found a box of shirts clearly labelled "bedroom" in my basement closet several months after the move.) My partner told me that Newbury receptionist kept demanding the boarding fee thst I already had paid. She acknowledged thst I had paid the fee after 15 minutes of arguing. My partner also told me that Newbury had forgotten to sedate the cat and only did so when my partner arrived. That was too late and my cat was too worked up about being put in the carrier and driven (not to mention moving to a new house) to do any good. Getting Grillo to subsequently discuss this was like pulling teeth. He shrugged off the demand for the boarding fee and asserted that I had received the sedation for which I had paid. He refused my request for a refund for the sedation even when I noted that it was worthless and would have been a nice gesture regarding the demand for the boarding fee. I will be moving back to the area but will not returning to Newbury. I am sure that they would not want me back after this. It is a clear case of taking the bad.

Although we have been lifelong cat owners, we have never dealt with such a daunting health issue. As soon as we met with Dr. Grillo and his staff, we knew we were in the very best care. They helped us every single step of the way, including medical boarding over the holidays, where our cat was treated like family. They are transparent about the costs of services and communicate all aspects of a care plan. The office has a positive and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff is always genuinely excited to see us and our cat. The staff is also incredibly helpful in answering questions over the phone. I am forever grateful for Newbury Animal Hospital's kindness, compassion, and expertise. We are so lucky to be in their care!

Steer clear of this place! They almost killed my dog…read more The FDA issued a warning about Credelio causing seizures on Sept 21st, 2018. Four months later they gave it to my dog! Immediately she started having diarrhea but I didn't connect the two. Then she started having seizures and the second one she stopped breathing in my arms. After I got back from the emergency Vet, I started to do research. When I called them to find out the name of the medication I also found out they gave her TWICE the amount for her weight! My dog is 76 pounds and they gave her a dose for a 100lb dog. This is clearly medical malpractice to gave prescribed a dangerous drug and also too much of it! I would like to remove their Cornell diploma and run it through the shredder. These people belong in jail!

Upon becoming new patients I was very impressed with the compassion and great care they provided to me and my pets. When my dog suffered a stroke and had to be put down, Dr Johnson was so kind and comforting. Fast forward to 2018, where the facility is now caring for my aging cat, who they diagnosed with Bladder stones. The price for the surgery was off the charts and I couldn't afford such a thing. The alternative was taht They put her on a special diet to dissolve the stones., and then when I tried to order food, they failed to do so. Upon calling multiple times to obtain food or a prescription where I could get it elsewhere I was told that they could not give me a prescription and they could not help me and that they no longer wanted to treat my cat. I asked them to please send me a prescription as my cat now would need to return to food that caused the stones as I had to be able to feed her something. I then received and email that They no longer wanted to treat my cat and were sending me a prescription and my records. This was so shocking to me that an actual VET that was so caring before would turn into not so much of the care of the animal but now turned into a money hungry uncaring person. My opinion is things changed when I couldn't dole out the money for surgery and wanted to try an alternative plan. When the alternative plan was to buy my food closer to home they felt they would no longer benefit from me being a customer. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Customer service and patient Care!!!!
