I am a very long-time avid gardener, & while I do enjoy perusing catalogs & online websites, normally prefer to see my plant purchases in person rather than taking a chance on the unknown, especially since I've been disappointed buying that way in the past. That said, Wayside Gardens has pleasantly surprised me. Had never purchased from them before, & frankly have always found most of their plant prices on the exorbitant side, but when I received a one-day-only e-mail promotion for what sounded like a too-good-to-be-true deal for Hellebores (three plants @ $6 each), I figured "What the heck". I've always wanted to try a few Hellebores in a particular shady spot, especially since they're touted as being at least somewhat toxic & unpalatable to both deer & rabbits, both of which consider much of my gardening attempts as interesting salad bar offerings. However, local sources for Hellebores - even when on sale - tend to be on the expensive side @ $15-$20 each for quart to half-gallon sizes, especially for an experimental planting. Thus I felt that $18 (+$9.95 shipping for a total of $27.95) for three plants was worth a shot. I'd either learn a lesson not to order from them again, or find a new source for the occasional good-deal plant purchase. Thankfully & surprisingly, my experience was the latter. Placed my order on March 21st; plants were in my mailbox on March 28th. Packaging was beyond excellent - natural raffia placed over the pot soil & rubber-banded to keep the soil in the pots & plenty of Styrofoam peanuts to keep all 3 plants separate. (Yes, yes I know - those pesky peanuts. But I actually enjoy receiving them because I use them as drainage layers in my orchid pots & large deck planters.) Since these were only 4" pots, I wasn't expecting much as far as plant size, but I kid you not when I say that each plant was not only healthy with perfect foliage, but had several foot-long stems each. I've seen local plants in lesser conditions than these! Haven't been able to plant them out yet due to the rather unrelenting rain we've been having recently, but they're happily residing in their little pots outdoors in a protected area, & I don't foresee them having any problems surviving (so long as their reputation for not being very palatable runs true). Bottom Line: Very pleased with condition of plants, packaging, & swiftness of delivery. Would order from them again, but most likely still for just interesting sale items only (that price thing again). read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! If I could give a negative 5 I would! I received 5 plants in Ca within their shipping window and they were all frost bitten and half dead. I was given a GC, but was not informed that it had to be used within a years time frame and now they will not honor the $100+ dollars I spent at their store to receive dead plants. I have been a loyal customer for over 15 years (partially on East Coast and now on West coast). I get it weather makes it hard to ship, but I spent money with the company so they should honor it no matter how long it has been especially since the agent did not verbalize that it'd expire in one year and living on the west coast is hard considering the weather. It's either really hot or freezing temps in mountains where the plants have to come through. I will no longer support this company since they wont do the right thing!!!! read more

Ordered 4 plants for spring planting. They weren't even shipped until mid May - these items should have been planted no later than early March. Even though the website seemed to indicate they'd at least ship in early April. First they removed one item because it was sold out. They did let me know. Then they shipped only 2 plants with no indication. Frustratingly, I could have bought these plants at my local garden store, but by the time they shipped and I realized I wouldn't be getting them, the stores were mostly sold out. I expected some sort of "sorry here's something for our mistake" maybe a future coupon or something, but nothing. So I just told them to take them back. They did, but three weeks on, they still haven't refunded my money. It's been a terrible experience. Never again. read more

My bad. I fell for the pretty pictures and was left $100+ poorer and have nothing to show for it. The plants were poorly packaged and arrived broken and dead. I have emailed at least 8 times and have called five times. No one responds to emails and the phone calls get put on hold. I was determined to get through and left one of the calls on hold for over an hour, but no one ever picked up. I have filed a complaint through my state's Attorney General but still have no refund. I received three dead plants from Wayside Gardens this spring - I mean really dead, like they were frozen in transit. I receive mail order plants all the time but have never seen anything like this. I wrote them multiple emails with order info and photos but have not heard a single word from them. My phone calls failed to reach a person with endless waiting times. I used to use this company and have been a customer with successful deliveries in the past, but when I needed them to respond to an issue after years of never contacting them with a complaint, they were nowhere to be found. Other garden supply companies do not have this type of customer service problem - they respond by email or by phone very promptly. These folks do an atrocious job when it comes to service. You can have a great catalog but if you can't respond to customers, it is all for naught. I will never will use them again. I ordered 7 perennials and 2 hydrangeas that were supposed to be delivered after the danger of frost had passed. They arrived when we still had several weeks of freezing temps in the forecast. Some of the plants still were only roots, and I had to plant them indoors until it was safe to move them outside. Still, less than half actually survived. Money down the drain. I, unfortunately, bought a $25 hydrangea from Wayside Gardens because I could not find the specific type that I wanted in our local plant nurseries. Shipping was $10. I'm updating my review based on the customer service I received after sending them pics of the plants. Wayside refunded the purchase price immediately and agreed that what I was sent was not a good plant. Ironically, I was able to nurse one back to a suitable growing plant. It's not what I would call a stellar plant at this point in the season but it is slowly getting healthier and showing good signs of staying that way. ordered 4 lavender plants & 2 Limelight hydrangeas. They came in a box via UPS (never a good sign) that had no "This Side Up" indication & should have been laid flat. The 2 hydrangeas look healthy, were laid side-by-side w/ plastic around the pot but nothing to hold the soil in place. There is no plant tag so who knows what they are---obviously recently pulled out of a bed & stuffed into pots, so we're starting w/ transplant shock. The 4 lavenders had been laid facing into the hydrangeas so were upside down most of the trip---1 was completely out of its pot, one had lost most of its soil, & all had been crammed tightly against the cardboard so the plants were completely flattened---& quite tiny to begin with. Should have checked yelp before I ordered but prices were good & I had discount coupons. I'll see if they have anything to say for themselves & if not I'll complain through my credit card company. Had an appalling situation with them. Among the worst of any business I've ever had the (dis) pleasure of purchasing from. I ordered 10 of a plant that has been hard to find in local nurseries, on March 23rd of this year. Initially, when I placed the order, I was given every indication that they would ship out immediately. After a week, I emailed them asking for a status update on shipping, as I couldn't see any indication that it had shipped. Their automated reply said they were really busy, and may take longer than "usual" to reply. Well, if longer means never, then they were right, because I never got a reply. Another week passed before I decided to reach them by phone. I called, and after an extensive hold I had to hang up and get on with my day. Then, it was finally a week later that I tried calling them again, after another extensive hold I got through to someone who said they would ship on the 20th of April. Even though this felt wrong to wait so long, I decided to just wait rather than go through the whole search process again to find someone else to buy it from. So, I waited...and finally, by the 30th of April, the package hadn't arrived, and the "expected ship date" on the order still read "shipping on the 20th of April," yet the "shipped status" said "has not shipped." So, here it is, 5 weeks after they charged my credit card, 4 weeks after they ignored my email, 3 weeks after my first unsuccessful attempt to reach them by phone. 2 weeks after my call in which they assured me it was shipping soon, and 1 week after the ship date, and I have no product, and have found this product at a local nursery which I've purchased from instead. All I can say is that I really wished I'd have checked yelp before ordering from them, as reading through recent reviews I see other similar, dissatisfied customers who had bad experiences in recent months. Next time I'm ordering through Amazon. Some businesses know how to keep customers, others just know how to piss them off. Wayside Gardens falls in the unfortunate latter category, and I hope you don't take the same chance with them that I did. read more

I am so mad at myself for not reading reviews before I purchased from this company. I ordered 3 small delphinium plants to the time of over $60. They arrived in horrible shape. They were even smaller than expected. One was in okay shape, one was in poor shape and one was nearly dead. I emailed customer service politely asking for replacements. Called the Wayside number listed online, and one lady was helping me, recognized my order, said they would replace the items, then never came back to the phone. Then, she handed the phone over to someone else, saying audible rude things about me, for apparently telling her that I had talked to some one at the same number the day before. I have contacted Wayside 5 times--via emails and their on line portal--regarding a bad order but have not received a response. Calling doesn't work either. This has been the most frustrating experience I have had with any on-line merchant. And I'm very surprised by the lack of basic customer service. Here's what happened--I ordered 10 Japanese Anemone. They were diseased when they arrived and have died or are dying. Worst customer service ever!! This used to be a highly reputable company, but, oh have times & big business have changed this outfit. I ordered a flowering shrub over a year ago, & altho it grew, it never bloomed until approximately 5 days ago. What I ordered was a forever red mountain Laurel, & much to my surprise and dismay, actually got an apricot colored azalea. How was I to know an error had occurred, until the darn thing bloomed?Phoned customer service, & from 2 reps to lastly a supervisor, they were unwilling to do anything about a replacement or a refund, due to the fact that it was ordered over a year ago. Provided the receipt & order info & they couldn't have cared less. Therefore I reported them to the BBB, who are following up on my case, which they found valid. Got a Gift Certificate for $50 from my mother in law and used it to buy a rose for $39, total was 51.79. Gift certificate would not apply online so called company who stated card is valid and will be applied to my purchase which they now say totaled $52.22 instead of 51.79. I Informed them I want the price their system quoted me online. They put me on hold for 10 minutes that stetted it was approved. Next day they charged my account $52:33. Gift card not applied and they charged me the extra. I am livid and want my money back. Do not buy from these people, they would have kept my $52:33 and gift card amount for $50. if I was not checking my account diligently. I don't get it. What changed. I've been using Wayside Gardens for over 30 years. Always been happy with service, delivery, accessibility, support from their horticulturalist, and quality of product. Last summer I ordered 4 plants and one was practically dead. Tried to revive but no luck. Wayside was very understanding and sent a replacement right away. Excellent service.. My recent order has been disheartening. I ordered a Japanese maple acer veri dissectum. What arrived was practically dead with all branches broken off and 3 inches of the stem was dead. I never looked at what was sent. They were very apologetic and was sent another. This time it was quite nice but wrong tree. So I called and when they looked at my initial order, it was confirmed...wrong variety. So they sent a 3rd and again sent the same as before. I was transferred to a supervisor who was very concerned about how much this was costing them and would need to investigate. No recognition of my frustration, that I paid over 100 and still no tree. I saw on their website that the variety I wanted was sold out. Its now past planting season. I gave the two healthy trees I received to friends as recommended by wayside. Don't order from Wayside! I ordered 6 Delosperma from Wayside Gardens. The plants arrived 2 weeks later, up-side down in the box. They were moldy and squashed. I immediately contacted Wayside, asking for a replacement. The first email went unanswered. After the second email, I got a response saying they were very busy right now and would get back to me. Two weeks later, they wrote an email saying they were "sorry to learn that the Delosperma failed to respond as well as expected in your garden." and would issue a store credit. I, once again, explained they didn't die in my garden but rather in the box on their way to my home. I asked for a complete refund or live plants. Today, they said they would issue a refund of the plant order but I am left holding the bag for the shipping. If I had bothered to read the reviews, I wouldn't have ordered. It was a good plant I will say this ... but, after not receiving anything else I called back and customer service canceled only only one item and saying the other item already had a PO on it ... this was two weeks ago ! Ordered items on 08.03.2017, it's now 09.14.2017 and they're still not here. Called and cancelled them. I did receive a bird feeder I wanted to give as a gift, but it arrived too late. To return it, I have to pay the shipping fee and a 20% restocking fee. Reason for the restocking fee - there's nothing wrong with it. ? Stay away. I bought 6 plants and planted in May according to directions. 2 out of six have survived. We called, sent pictures 4 times now and cannot get a proper response. I am going to take it further because it is not fair that they say they have the guarentee and they don't. I sent an email beginning of this month and said I would be calling as well. Emailed me back for FIRST time and said no one would answer, it would be email only. AND that someone would be contacting me. Well, I have sent 2 more emails and still waiting for that return email. I do not recommend anyone who don't live up to their guarentee so be careful. I don't know if they have lost money due to Covid but haven't we all? Wayside has always carried a great selection on newer varieties available on the market, but the plants they send are extremely small for the prices paid. I have lost all kinds of plants from this place because they are to small to survive and it gets old. I have been looking for better quality. My suggestion is keep the plants longer and ship better plants. I just got a peony with one tiny eye on it and a dahlia with two small roots and one eye. I know they can improve. read more

Ordered Cercis Whitewater for $74! I was excited to get this because it grows in the shade and the pic looked lovely! However, it all died at the top within the spring/summer season so now it wont grow any bigger. Called Wayside and they refused to give me any kind of credit because it was past 8 days or something ridiculous like that.
