Open to Edward Hines Jr Hospital employees only, the fitness center is located in a very isolated part of the hospital building and open 24 hours. I remember it like yesterday during my job orientation when my coworker took me on a tour of the hospital which included this fitness center. It felt calm during that initial visit as it has during the times I tend to visit. There are sporadic visits by Edward Hines Jr Hospital employees coming in-and-out, likely in-between or after work shift. I for one love getting in a workout during my 15-minute or 30-minute breaks, and also when I am off work where I can get in a quality workout. It is easy to get to that fitness machine you intend on utilizing because of it not being crowded like your typical fitness centers. At any moment, if you have an accident or feel unsafe, there are panic alarms in place around the fitness center and even inside of the locker rooms. Some things that I adore about the fitness center are the flat-screen televisions plastered up on the wall in the machine area which I feel provide noise and a distraction as you work out. I love the blood pressure measurement machine, even though you can easily get an inaccurate reading based on having incorrect posture. Tracking my blood pressure is one thing I want to keep up with as I get older but sheesh! I have yet to get an elevated or normal blood pressure reading off of the machine unless it is taken in-between working out. As far as cleanliness, I have never once questioned the cleanliness of any of the machines used. To maximize everyone's safety, the users of the fitness center are responsible for cleaning/ disinfecting any equipment/ gear before and after use. I always feel that it shows respect cleaning a machine after utilizing it, as like it is for a dog owner to clean up after their dog when outdoors. At the back of the fitness center, there is an open area tailored for workouts like yoga, stretching, calisthenics, or exercises that require the use of mats or resistance stretch bands which there are plenty of for use. There are no free weights, but there are quality machines that will allow you to get in a good workout. Some of my personal favorites are the Cybex VR1 Dual Abdominal/Back Extension, and two of their treadmills: a Cybex, and a Life Fitness treadmill. The Cybex VR1 Dual Abdominal/Back Extension machine is growing on me very much. The very first time I utilized it, I literally had to look it up on YouTube, because I had never used a machine like it in spite of having visited many gyms throughout the years. I have to say that it is a very stable abdominal machine. One of the treadmills I adore is a treadmill by Cybex that has a television attached to it; the television itself activates immediately once you step foot on it. The first time I used it, I was able to watch World Wrestling Entertainment Smackdown which only kept me on it longer. The other one, a Life Fitness treadmill has a feature that allows you to change the speed from 3 mph to 7 mph by the press of a button. It is a very convenient feature because you do not have to continuously press the button to either increase or decrease speed. In the meantime, the Hines VA Employee Fitness Center has contributed to my desire to work out with everything it offers, and the times and days it is accessible. Through the training of the Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga, each student learn many self defense techniques. It has…read morea decent variety of equipment, free weights, an aerobics room, and also offers some aerobics and water classes. They offer a 20 yard indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna as well. Most of it is accessible 24 hours. (The pool/hot tub, aerobics studio, and free weight room are closed overnight.) Trainers will work with you to develop a individual workout plan without extra charge. The gym is far better than most clubs you will find attached to an apartment building, and the locker rooms do include soap, shampoo, hair dryers, etc. The sauna is coed (this could be a plus or minus depending upon your point of view) but is kept nice and hot. If you don't live in Regent's Park, free parking is included with your membership, which would be a plus in the winter especially. All this being said, it's still pretty pricey for a fairly small sized club, with the cheapest option costing over $60 a month, or over $70 if you don't live in Regent's Park. I have just started going and will re-evaluate what I think of the club after more experience with it. I haven't seen him, but Obama supposedly used to work out here, although I don't know if he still does (and if he does, they probably shut the club down when he's using it now for security reasons.)

When I brought my kid back after they reopened, what I saw was a nightmarish Corona Virus soup being prepared inside: --not one staff member wore a mask --the waiting area was packed with adults and kids breathing all over each other without masks --a lady with no mask was continually coughing in the waiting area (could've been allergies or scratchy throat, but do you really want to expose your kids to that?) --no hand sanitizer to be found anywhere --all staff members talking to clients and kids within inches of each other's faces (lengthy conversations, mind you) --the groups were not minimized (15-20 kids per session) So if you want to increase your chances of catching the virus go for it. But I turned right around after a five minute observation of the hell that was happening inside and will yank my kid out of there for good. Not worth risking your life over this. I wish these people would stop pretending the virus is magically disappear if you ignore it.
