I cannot recommend Dr. Matthew Brown or RIA based on my experience…read more From the beginning, I made it very clear that I have an extensive family history of terminal cancer of all ages and I had already accumulated significant radiation exposure within the year following my pulmonary AVM diagnosis. I have lost multiple close family members to cancer, so every additional CT scan carries an enormous emotional burden for me, since just ONE CT scan raises your cancer risk. I repeatedly explained this and fiercely advocated for myself, but my concerns were never taken seriously. Instead, they were consistently dismissed. My first pulmonary AVM embolization performed by Dr. Brown ultimately failed. I later learned that recanalization after embolization is relatively uncommon (less than 5%), and that failure led to additional testing, an additional radiation angiogram procedure, and another CT scan that would've been avoided had the initial treatment been successful. The worst part came afterward. I requested a follow-up bubble study in lieu of a CT, which showed only a very small late right-to-left shunt--approximately 10 late bubbles. I read on my own that tiny shunts like that aren't treatable and carry no significant risk. I pleaded with Dr. Brown not to order another CT scan and asked that alternatives be considered because of my recent radiation history, given this was such a tiny shunt. Those concerns were ignored. Being told that "there's radiation everywhere" after expressing my fears about cumulative radiation exposure wasn't reassuring--it was dismissive. I was also told without the CT, he wouldn't provide me with medical clearance for future procedures. After seeking a second opinion at Anschutz, I was told that, in my case, the final CT scan was not necessary. The physician reviewed published literature with me indicating that fewer than 30 late bubbles are not associated with any significant neurological risk. He also explained that my request of just a bubble study echocardiogram would have been more than sufficient, rather than another CT scan--an option that was never given to me despite my repeated concerns about radiation exposure. The physician at Anschutz also provided me with medical clearance for future procedures and said the bubble study was enough for that (when Dr. Brown said it wasn't and required the unnecessary CT). Learning afterward that there was published evidence supporting a different approach left me wondering why that evidence was never discussed with me, or why Dr. Brown never read it, or even researched it before ordering another CT scan knowing I was so against it. Now I live with the fear that I underwent additional radiation exposure that wasn't even necessary. No one can tell me whether it will ever affect my health, but I am the one who has to carry that uncertainty for the rest of my life. As the mother of three young children under five years old, that fear is overwhelming. I want to be here for them and watch them grow up. This wasn't just simply disagreeing about a treatment plan--it was feeling that my concerns were dismissed rather than discussed. Shared decision-making means listening to patients, especially when they come prepared and ask informed questions. I don't think it's an unreasonable request of patients that current medical evidence and relevant studies be considered and kept up with by their physician. That was not my experience. This experience permanently damaged my trust in Dr. Brown and RIA. I'm transferring all of my care to Anschutz, and I only wish I had done so before undergoing multiple angiograms and CT scans, including the ones deemed unnecessary. If you have HHT, suspected HHT, or any type of arteriovenous malformation (AVM), I strongly encourage you to seek care at Anschutz instead of RIA. Anschutz will listen to you and your concerns. If you do stay with RIA, at least secure a second opinion before agreeing to repeated imaging or major treatment decisions. I wish I had trusted my instincts sooner. Patients deserve physicians who listen, respect informed questions, stay current on pertinent medical literature, and practice genuine shared decision-making. Unfortunately, that was not my experience with Dr. Matthew Brown or RIA. I deserved better. My children deserved better for their mom. Please continue advocating for yourself. Just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean you should stop trying. They will have to hear us eventually. -Samantha R

Between Doc Bell and Kate, we did a few tests on me for GERD to get a handle on what was going on. After results came back, we all agreed surgery was the way to go. Doc fixed up my hiatal hernia, and was able to do a LINX procedure to fix Issues with the LES. Doc has always been up front with me. Kate has always explained the test procedures we were doing. Post surgery, doc spoke with my wife while I was in post op. Today, one day after the procedure, Kate called to see how I was doing. I can't say enough food things about how I was treated, and how nice it'll be not to have GERD.

The elderly librarian-looking woman is also very unfriendly. Which I wouldn't mind, if she did her job properly. She also became extra rude when I asked for the information needed to check coverage on my own. She knows she should be doing this, and gets cranky when a patient knows enough to realize the work hasn't been done and wants to do it on their own. Worst of all worlds.

I worked with him weekly for the last year of 3 I have been his patient, slowly unable to walk and my health deteriorating before my eyes like never before. He is deeply jaded, his nurses are uncaring and uninterested in their work as health care providers, watching me in pain and offering 0 hands as I streamed tears of pain in front of them and wouldn't even look at me. He is burnt out, unknowledgeable, and doesn't care to be curious and thoughtful about your case. He gets to go home and forget about it while you experience 24/7 unbearable pain. He doesn't speak Korean well, at least not enough to take care of your Korean elders to his fullest potential. Gratefully had some education in healthcare and knew what I deserved as a patient, so I did all my care planning and research on my own which prevented me from giving up on my life. No matter how much I sobbed and begged to Dr. Lee every week, he just kept saying to me every week "I don't know, I'd I knew I'd tell you" over and over again and refused to listen to me ask him to refer me to someone else, anyone else, multiple times. But he said he didn't have anyone else he knew in the field, no doctor friends or professionals he knew, which is worrisome. He also told me he had worked with "another extreme case like yours" and got no answers for them either, and gave up on me too. Seems like there's a pattern of his negligence. He might be good for a perfectly healthy individual who just needs annual blood work, but you better not hope any bad news shows up or you'll end up with medical trauma like I did, working it out weekly in therapy for who knows how many more years. There are many other Korean practices, it's worth the drive if you need to go further. His front staff speaks Korean, but that's it. They are kind though, the front desk has always been nice to me. This office has outdated systems and communication methods. It is a pain to try to get anything done efficiently with them. I would not recommend if you care about your health recovery at all. Once I left Dr. Jae Lee's clinic, I found an incredible doctor who was shocked about what I hold him I experienced in Dr. Lee's care and within a month I finally got *all* the care I couldn't even beg on my knees every week for a year with Dr. Lee. There are providers who actually care, and Dr. Lee's office and those who work under him is a direct reflection of Dr. Lee's ethics and attitudes towards patient care and healing. You deserve better than Dr. Lee, and I promise it's out there, it's not worth the horrible delay of care that will worsen your health beyond what you ever experienced while your PCP shrugs in front of you and your father saying there's nothing he can do when he hasn't tried to do anything at all. I think this clinic would have a fighting chance if Dr. Lee would just wake up to the reality that he might be lacking and need to step up to respect his patients health and the field of medicine. Burnt out doctors happen, but Dr. Lee needs to check in with how he chooses to perform his patient care.
