Having previously visited the Door County Maritime Museum and the Cana Island Lighthouse, we were…read moredisappointed in the Death's Door Maritime Museum. All three are affiliated, but this one seems neglected in comparison to the other two, which are of very high quality. The Death's Door one is very small and does not have as many interactive exhibits or attention to upkeep (evident by the steps full of weeds that lead up to the entrance). The best part is the wooden fishing tug named "Hope" that was built in 1930; visitors can climb in and even steer the wheel. It would be super nice if this museum would have some of the features from the main Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, such as the introductory overview video of Door County and the interactive high-tech exhibit that shows if the person behind the steering wheel is doing a great job or wrecking the boat. Fortunately the nice employee told us about the small privately-owned Island Clipper Ferry right beside the museum, and we took a wonderful ride through the Death's Door waters to Washington Island and back. That made it worth going all the way up to the top of the peninsula, but the museum alone would have not.

After taking the train ride into the mine a guide will lead you thru the mine. Im 63 and always take first timers to the UP to the Iron Mine. I probably have been through this mine 30plus times. I feel I could be a guide since I can practically recite what they tell you. LOL Don't miss a chance to tour this mine. P.S. A word of caution don't wear new shoes. Weat an old beat up pair. There is moisture on the walking path and with all the iron in the soil your shoes will become a rusty rea color,.

My preference not for everyone, but I feel like there is so much WWII thrown in our faces everywhere we go and I'm tired of it, there's so much more history that gets forgotten about because of this. The highlight of our visit was the docent. As we were the only customers there, she spent a good bit of time with us. I look forward to our next trip to the island, I'd like to talk to her again. She was a sweet person with the knowledge of an encyclopedia. Washington Island is a national treasure. This museum will help you understand why this is so. With some of the political messages on the sculptures, I must say that what this man does with metal and steel is very impressive! on the day that I visited, I was able to witness the dog sled race, and snowmobiles going by even though there has been some issues with the sled riders in the recent past by defacing some of the artwork. this place is truly a gem if you're ever in the area do yourself a favor and visit you won't be disappointed!

I didn't experience any paranormal activity but with the history and stories we were told I wouldn't doubt there is hauntings. If you are into history especially Wisconsin ghost stories then I recommend checking it out.

It's like walking into the office back in 1900. The entire building is as it was back when the company was in full business. It's as if the workers left for lunch and never came back. It's very spooky in the sense that time has stood still for over 100 years. It's well worth the stop.
