Melissa was my bridal consultant and she showed so much care for me, my family that had come with me, and even my fiancé who was not with me. She really took the time to get to know me and get to know what my style preferences were and understood what I needed to be able to not get overwhelmed by the options they had. She even let us go past my appointment end time because we were stuck between three options and put me back in each one to see if it could help me narrow it down and it absolutely did. I ended up buying my favorite that day and I am so, so, so excited to wear it for my wedding! Fantastic customer service and great selection however I was disappointed with the size of the dress. I was somehow in between 3 sizes with my hips, bust, and waist. Without any conversation they told me to order the biggest one which was much larger than necessary. I wish there would've been more conversation around this since I lost a few pounds and alterations were a bit of help.I was literally SWIMMING in mine. We should've talked about the size before ordering. In the end my dress was bigger than it should've been for my wedding. It would've been nice if the consultant talked through this more with me because I would've done with the smaller size. read more

Going to Weddings By Design to find my wedding dress was the best decision I could have made! Jan was my consultant and she was AMAZING! I went in with an idea of what I wanted and she helped pick dresses that fit that idea, as well as some to give different styles a try. Jan was never pushy, even when encouraging me to try on different styles than I thought I would like. She made the experience so fun and I felt no pressure and at ease the whole time. I felt like a number to this company, they did not give me a very special experience. They constantly reminded me how much each dress cost and how I could pay for it versus letting me try on the dress and worry about the price at the end. While I was there, other workers kept aggressively reminding me of how much time I had left because they had so many other appointments booked for after me. I did not get the allotted appointment time either, because the front doors were still locked 5 minutes after the appointment start times, leaving 4 brides and the people joining them out in the cold. The floater employees were only there to remind of the remaining minutes left. I felt pressured and rushed versus getting the experience any future bride deserves. For the dresses, they had no "in between dresses" they were either all under $1,500 or over $3,000. I had no option for the price range in between these. read more

Madison was sweet, kind, personable and made it feel like she was another one of my bridesmaids just helping me find my dress. Lets begin, shall we? My partner and I are planned for a long engagement, and I have been dragging my heels on shopping for a wedding dress. Why? In January, I went to a certain VERY fancy and hoity toity wedding dress shop in West Des Moines and hated it. The consultant was perfunctory and super sassy. I normally love sassy; this woman was ripping on and off dresses so quickly, I felt as though she was telling me what I did and didn't like. Fast forward to May. I gathered up three of my best friends to support me and headed to Weddings by Design. Enter another very sassy lady, but this one was Oh, so sassy in all the right ways. Christy was our consultant and made me feel so comfortable. I was up front about my partner (who wants to hide the best part of their lives!?) and Christy put me right at ease. Not by shrugging it off, like so many others in the bridal industry, but by sharing her own stories, and asking me about ours. She was phenomenal from the beginning. She spent HOURS. HOURS.(a full hour beyond my appointment) helping me try and retry on dresses, and when I found THE ONE, she picked out the most incredible veil and belt on for it. Yes, I cried. She crunched numbers and got me a very good deal. Still a few hundred dollars over my original budget, but for all three items, it was a very good deal, nonetheless. I put my credit card down to hold the dress/belt/veil with the written agreement that if I go home and want to change my mind, I have a few days (2) to rationally crunch the numbers and cancel with no cost to me. In the end, I don't know if I will keep the dress. My partner and I are paying for the wedding all by ourselves (parents are not fully on board), so I need to be practical, but if I DON'T buy the dress, I know that I will send all of my friends to this shop and I will certainly be purchasing my accessories there. I would give 10 stars if I could. Absolute AMAZING experience from the time we stepped through the door to the time we left. We were welcomed like we were family, that we mattered and each gal working there made the bride feel special and cared for, especially the wonderful woman assisting our bride. Weddings by Design could give a master class in what a wedding boutique should be. The woman assisting us was energetic, cheerful, fun, helpful, caring and the best part it was not put on-it was genuine, just an overall AMAZING person!!! She made us all (3 Bridesmaids, Mother and Aunt) feel like we mattered and talked to each one of us and made us all feel just as important as the Bride. I loved how each bride had their own changing area with surrounding mirrors and a curtain that goes across the changing area. so when the woman assisting slides it back and reveals the bride it is like huge reveal - so much fun to see the dresses-makes the Bride feel like a princess. Helping our bride to be was the purpose of this visit. She had already been to a couple other locations and had a couple more booked in case she did not find what she was looking for. They greeted us with a smile as she checked in. Call ahead for your appointment! They gave us a nice lady who works there part time (over 8 years now) because she loves to help girls find their dress. She helped the bride pull multiple dresses from the room. As bridesmaids we were given a comfy couch to lounge on when we weren't up helping pick dresses. They have a little Kureg if you want coffee or hot chocolate. Which we needed cause the room was cold to us, but probably perfect for a blushing bride and her helper. The other ladies in the store were around if we had questions and all curious and happy when our bride found her dress. They take a picture of you and place it on their Facebook if you find the dress. It was lots of fun helping my girlfriend and she was overall happy with the entire experience. read more

Staff was not very polite on the phone or in person. When my friend went they were not very polite, but did have her try her bridesmaids dress on to make sure it was ok. When I went they just handed it to me and sent me on my way. They made me feel like I was a large inconvenience even though I picked up my dress on a Thursday afternoon when no one else was there to occupy them. We had a terrible experience here. Generally I only do positive reviews but when it comes to life milestones, like a wedding, I feel like customer service matters more than usual. We had looked at some of their dresses on prior visits, and eventually my fiancé said she was going to order dresses and grabbed the credit card to go to Weddings by Design. She was floating with happiness and excitement - this after being blown off with a simple request for info for a few days. There turned out to be some trivial disagreement in the communication between my fiancé and the owner, and the owner blew it up to the point that my fiancé left practically in tears. I am self employed for 25 years, and I've never thrown away a sale like this. Every customer is important to me, irrespective of the size of the order. Apparently Weddings by Design has a different philosophy. Absolutely no attempt was made by the store to resolve the problem. I gave 2 stars because the products are fine, and a couple of the workers were trying to be helpful - but the rudeness exhibited by the owner was over the top and unacceptable. I was referred to Weddings By Design based on a few friends recent experiences and recommendations. The minute I walked in, I thought everyone was very pleasant to work with. Grace was my consultant that morning, and she really listened to what I wanted in a dress and didn't try to push me on price. I came in and had showed her a few interests that I had seen on Pinterest and told her the amount I was looking to spend. She immediately picked out 7-8 dresses and into the fitting room we went. I wasn't sure what to expect. Toward the end, I had found a dress off of one of their As-is racks, but found to be a bit small. I tried on this dress twice, and thought this was the one, but in looking at what it would have taken to get sized properly and alterations, it was going to cost more then a new dress we estimated. In looking in disappointment, Grace left for a few minutes and came back with one last dress from another section and insisted that I try it on. After a sleeve change, I feel in love! Looked at Grace and said this is it! I had tried on so many dresses and within 5-10 mins I had made my decision. I was nervous walking in and Grace took all the nerves away with her positive attitude. I'm sure all the ladies are great there, but I highly recommend Grace! Melissa, the Owner, Kelsey, the Manager, and two of the Attendants, Kelsey and Linda all helped me though a nightmare that drug on for months with the previous boutique. The whole team went above and wildly beyond their means to guide me through the debacle even though I didn't find my new dress through them. Melissa went above and beyond to make me feel like the most beautiful bride, my fiancé and I have been together for almost 9 years and engaged for four I wanted to make sure that it's on the perfect dress for our wedding. I had a long list of requirements that I wanted in a dress and pulled many dresses to try on, after trying on about five or six of the ones that I had chosen Melissa came back with a dress that she picked her self after listening to everything that I had told her I was looking for. I first went to Weddings By Design a few months ago in search of a bridal gown. I did not find my dream gown there, however, the energy in the store and the personal attention I received from Melissa, the owner, made me really wish I had. So when it was time to look at bridesmaid dresses, this was the first place I went to. Unfortunately for me, the dresses I chose were Alfred Angelo, and that designer closed it's doors suddenly and filed for bankruptcy after my order had been sent in. But the good news is, Melissa is reputable and honest, and told me the money had not yet been sent on. It was held in house to match with the invoice once the dress came in. A very long story short, I received so much personal attension from Melissa, and she spent a lot of time, even corresponding with me while on vacation, to ensure that I found replacement dresses I was happy with. It ended up being a designer she didn't carry, but she made it happen! The new dresses were a whopping $100 more per dress (eek!), and get this. She ate the difference as a gift to me. The designer going bankrupt had nothing to do with her. She just happened to be a store that carried it. But she cared so much about me as a customer that she wanted to make it right. Weddings by Design is awesome. My first appointment was with Christie, and I tried on probably 15 wedding gowns during that time. I told her at the beginning that I wouldn't be buying today because it was my first time trying on wedding gowns and I didn't have anyone with me to give me a second opinion, but she was still more than happy to help. At my second appointment with her, I brought along my mom and we chose my dress. The store has a great selection without being overwhelming, and their consultants are very attentive (if you have an appointment). That's definitely a key tip here - always make an appointment. I also ordered my bridesmaid dresses from WBD because of their great customer service and because if you buy your wedding gown there, they will discount the bridal party dresses. This was a challenge because my wedding was in Chicago and my bridesmaids were located all over the country and none could come to Iowa to be measured. So Melissa, Sandy, and Natalie all helped me through the fitting/ordering process. They were all great to work with in person and over the phone. Finally, Jude did the alterations on my dress, taking in the sides, putting in cups, and orchestrating my 13 point French bustle. She did a fantastic job, and my dress fit me like a glove on my wedding day. read more

I found my dress my first day shopping at Weddings by Design. I had awesome help from all the gals there but I specifically worked with christy and she was a blast! She made me so good in every dress and helped me speak my mind when I had a few opinions! After finding my gorgeous dress she helped 4/6 bridesmaids find their gowns as well. (Good deal if you get your dress and bridesmaids there too! FYI) There was never any pressure to buy, you can tell they all truly care about making sure you are happy and feel good through this whole experience. Bridesmaid Dress Experience at Weddings by Design We tried on dresses for the first time on 4/14/18. We fell in love with a Sorella Vita dress and bought all five, paid in full on this date. All five women were measured by an employee. We were told that the only type of alterations needed would be hemming and possibly extra fabric/padding to the bust line for Amanda (MOH). The dress we tried on in April fit everyone perfectly the only type of alteration that was apparent was hemming. Dresses arrived on 8/6/18. Sara (bride) was told that the bridesmaids need to come in and try on the dresses. The women began making appointments. Three out of the five bridesmaids called the bride in a panic. The dresses were so tight they couldn't breathe. They were worried about fainting during the wedding. The dresses are also so tight that they are no longer elegant. Our once flowing, soft, elegant dresses were gone and in their place we received dresses that make everyone look pregnant. Amanda's experience is quoted below: When I went in to pick up my dress I tried it on and discovered it did not fit as the initial "test" dress did. I was advised by one of your employees that the dress would fit tighter and stretch out the longer it was worn, which after seeing the fabric and material I find hard to believe. I advised the employee I was super uncomfortable in the dress the she assured me this is how the dress was "supposed to fit" and that it was completely normal to need two people to zip these "types" of dresses up due to the style and clasp in the back. I was later advised by Melissa that is in fact is NOT normal and that the dress shouldn't require two people to zip and clasp it. Amanda has had the most appalling experience. She has been in Weddings by Design a few times to try to fix the problem. Each time she has walked out of the store on the brink of tears. The employees at your store have callously laughed and said "well that doesn't fit you at all", insinuated that her body is not the same as it was in April, and have overall not listened to what she, the customer, thinks is best. They told her that the dress would have to be completely let out and resewn back in. They would "start her an alterations tab". She was initially quoted $100 to just take the different seams out of the dress and allow the seamstress to re size the dress to fit her body. Then it was advised that WBD would start a "running tab" due to additional fees and alterations costs needing to be added to ensure it fit properly, as she was having to basically "re-create" the dress. It seems per the emails that were sent that no matter what kind of dress we would have ordered whether it be a size 10 or a size 12 MAJOR alterations would have had to take place to ensure the dress fit properly. This is obviously very confusing since the dress the bridesmaids initially tried on fit perfect and the only type of alteration that would have been absolutely necessary is to have the dress hemmed which would have been a much more affordable cost. At this point we don't even know if Amanda should be ordering a size 12 or if the size 10 that we initially ordered would be appropriate due to all the different kinds of feedback/information we have been given by not only the owner but the employees in the store. This has caused a lot of stress on the bride and bridesmaids. Amanda describes the emotional aspect below: In addition I feel all of the blame has been directed at my body "changing" which has been addressed not only in person but several emails. I can assure you my "body" is not the problem as it hasn't changed since my initial apt in April. This whole experience has left me feeling embarrassed, insecure, and ashamed. None of these emotions are emotions a bride or her bridal party should EVER have to feel during these types of interactions and appointments. Body shaming or "body blaming" is not something I feel like should be tolerated in this line of work where the only sole responsibility you should have is making your clients feel beautiful and amazing. We had a 90 minute conversation with Melissa. She fought us every second! She is extremely rude and combative. If she messes up your dress hell will freeze over before she will admit her mistake. Loved, LOVED working with them! Had gone everywhere around DSM and was beyond disappointed with service and customer treatment (especially when spending THIS much $$!) at bridal stores. WBD was great. They were very helpful, flexible with their appointment times, have a wide range of price points and work with you when you want to make a dress 'just so' by alterations. I came back about 4 times before deciding on the one (i was between 2 dresses) and was treated with the same respect and kindness each time. The final time, I was with my parents and bridesmaids and they all loved the girls here. The staff is always having fun and smiling, and very helpful, especially for us guys that could use a little bit of assistance in this department! Manager and Owner of Weddings By Design, Melissa - is antagonistic - combative! I am appalled at the manner in which she spoke to me. My mother and I stopped by the store to follow up from a request that I had made over the phone a few days back. The request was to expedite the standard rush for bridesmaid dresses made by Alfred Angelo. Melissa had told me over the phone during my initial request that the dresses would not arrive until March 18th - a day before my wedding, with the standard rush fee. My next question to Melissa was whether or not an expedited rush was possible if I was willing to pay more of a rush charge. Melissa said that she would need the measurements for the dresses, but that she would check with the mfg dept to see if this kind of rush was possible. I called the following day and had to re-explain everything to a stylist because there was no information in the system about my request that I had made with Melissa. After being placed on hold, I was told that customer service requires 24-48hrs to respond to email requests and that there was nothing more they could do. The next day (day 3) I called again to follow up and yet again had to re-explain everything. No one seemed to know about my rush inquiry and there was nothing in the system. I was again told that customer service has up to 48 hours to respond and that there is nothing more that can be done until we hear back from them. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. So now, my final day of attempting to work with Weddings By Design - my mother and I walked into the store around 11:45am and greeted by Robin and Madison. They were unable to help me as they had no notes of my request, nothing in the system, and nothing on Melissa's desk. Melissa was called and notified that I was in the store following up on my request. Melissa asked to speak with me, and told me she was on her way in and to go ahead and give Robin and Madison the measurements and colors. Robin and Madison were helpful and polite while taking down my order - I had just told them how happy and excited I was when Melissa entered the store. Melissa was straight faced and sadly - snide towards me. She told me that the soonest my dresses could arrive was the 11th of March, and that it would hardly be worth my time since I would have to pay so much in shipping and fees to get my dresses ready in time. I really wanted the dresses, and I told her that was okay to me. She then became very combative - literally arguing AT me - and accused me being at fault because I hadn't given her the measurements sooner. (This made absolutely no sense to me as I had been waiting for her to get back to me on my request to expedite the standard rush). I tried to defuse her temper by asking her what she was trying to say or do by making the accusations. I told her that I didn't think this to be something to argue about, and I asked her to stop. My mother even tried to deescalate Melissa's attack by reassuring her that everything had been going well with Robin and Madison, and that we just wanted to continue with the order. Melissa proceeded to raise her voice at my mother and continued with her onslaught. My heart was beating so fast, I was so upset that I just said, "Okay, we are done here!" and told my mother we were not doing business here. Melissa badgered me the whole way out the door. It was terrible, I felt awful. I couldn't believe I had just been treated like that. If you didn't want to work with me, Melissa or if you were unable to grant my request you should have just told me. Instead, you treated me so badly that you knew I would end up walking out and giving up. It was shameful. I am beyond disgusted. *****UPDATE***** So, two days after I posted the review above, Melissa leaves a comment on my review....It seems that the Owner of Weddings By Design - Melissa - affirms my experience...she is yet again making false accusations and avoids holding herself accountable for ANY of her shortcomings in relation to her dealings with me. I assure all readers that my review is 100% accurate, and that I would never falsify information - not for a small private business or any other entity. Melissa chooses to further insult me - her customer - by stating in her response to my review, that the information in my review is inaccurate. This is no more than a desperate attempt to save her reputation. BE CAREFUL bridal shoppers, you never know what kind of service you're going to get with this company. This was the first dress place I went to and my experience was terrible. The woman I worked with was belittling during the entire appointment. She told me no question was a dumb one but then proceeded to treat me like an idiot. She was rude to my mother, rude to me and overall unpleasant to work with. I was so disappointed in my experience. I know other ladies who work here are nice but she needed a reality check. She bragged about how she had been doing this for 8 years. Personally, I don't know how she makes a sale with this kind of attitude. I was in the changing room with her on the verge of tears because of how she was treating me. I found a dress I loved here and for less expensive than the second store I visited but I didn't return here because I didn't want to give them my business. I had the best experience at Weddings By Design. I had 3 appointments scheduled in one day and Weddings By Design was my first. The shop has an awesome layout with more than enough room for my whole entourage. I was able to choose dresses that I wanted to try on with the help of my amazing consultant. She was so helpful and did not make me try on anything I didn't want to or anything that was outside of my price range. The staff at Weddings By Design is extremely professional and personal. I felt like they were all there to help me find my dress! After going to my second appointment of the day, I skipped my third appointment and went back to Weddings By Design to try my dress on again and say YES! They got me right in to try it on again even though the store was busy. My bridesmaids also got to try on some dresses the same day! This is the best bridal shop I have ever been to and would recommend it to everyone! I was able to take my time trying the dresses on, my consultant Allyn was so awesome and helpful throughout the whole process. My whole entourage felt that this place was more personal, polite, and knowledgable than any other bridal boutique we had visited. 5 STARS! read more

I bought my wedding dress at Weddings by Design when I was living in Des Moines with a move to Chicago on the horizon. They were extremely professional and knew their stuff. It was a fun experience at the store and I had full confidence that they would take care of us. I received my dress on time and they were always more than willing to answer any questions I had. I made the decision to have quite a few alterations done to my dress, turned an A-Line dress into a fit and flare, Jude their alterations specialist is second to none! She listened carefully to the styles I liked and made suggestions based off of my responses to the dresses. I ended up loving an alfred angelo that she chose for me to try on. I didn't buy it that day because I wanted to visit just a few other shops first, but nothing compared to this dress! I was able to call her again and make more order on the phone. First off let me say I adored my dress. It was perfect in every single way. Stunning and I could feel myself glowing in it. Unfortunately that has everything to do with the designer (ella) and not the store. I wouldn't recommend weddings by design to my worst enemy if I had one. Their lack of professionalism combined with a lack of business ethics and integrity make what should be one if the most special days in a girl's life, a nightmare. I have never been treated so poorly by a business. I can shorten my awful experiences into a paragraph that will fit here but first I encourage you to not just take my word for it. Ask around as I have discovered by word of mouth and witnessing the same thing happens to other brides that happened to me while I was in the store. Look them up through the better business bureau's website. They have multiple complaints some of which were never resolved to customer satisfaction. Look at Google reviews (which are quite low). Don't trust their facebook page as by experience I know they immediately delete any post that is completely positive. Their unprofessional and unethical business tactics cost me over $500 to fix. After they have convinced you to buy their dresses (that are very expensive) they argue with you about the size saying they are the experts. When your dress arrives and won't stay up they sing a much different story. I experienced this as well as witnessed them do it to another bride in the store. After using social networking to discuss my dissatisfaction it came to my attention many others who I am friends with or acquainted with that this is their norm. Avoid this store like the plague. They do have some nice consultants but the owner and managers are awful to deal with and I am a mental health therapist that deals with assisting people to manage this on a daily basis. Asking for a dress that fits, your voice to be heard and respected and receiving a courteous response is not too much to ask for from a business esp when I spent $2000 on the dress alone without $100 for shoes, $210 for veil, $210 for hair piece, and $100 on gown preservation. Instead their response to my better business bureau complaint is to pit in writing calling me demeaning names saying that I am lying. Find their beautiful dresses and brands somewhere else and keep that experience special to you. Called this place and even thou they said that they were booked two weeks out they invited me down to check them out anyway. I came down and they were really really busy but even thou they were experiencing a really stressful time they were still extremely nice and professional to me, even thou i was inconveniencing them. They were sweet tempered and considerate, excellent customer service. They set up my profile and got everything ready for my Bride's maids to come in and buy their dresses in the easiest way for them, just get measured and pay, everything else was done for them. they even agrees to alter my wedding gown, which had not been bought from there. I am really impressed by them becuase I have been to other places, like "storybook" in Boone, which was terrible and treated me poorly and had bad attitudes, and Schaffers who could have cared less that I was alive. talk about "snoody, self centered, only care about getting the sale and don't care a thing about the bride" place. This place was nothing like that. More than just me raving about it, my maid of honor went in today to be measured and buy her dress and she reported that she had never been treated so respectfully by a formalwear store. She too had visited Storybook and Schaffers among others that treated her like another pocket book they were trying to raid. Weddings by Design made my wedding planning process absolutely amazing and stress free. Not only did I find my dream dress but the consultants, manager and even the owner gave me attention fit for a queen. Every time, I came into the store they made me feel important and beautiful. The attention to detail is unparalleled to any other. My gorgeous Maggie Sottero dress was measured so perfectly the only alterations I needed was adding a bustle. I also purchased my bridesmaids gowns at this store and they were absolutely perfect. My maid of honor had a different style but this was not a problem and the consultants assisted me in picking out dresses that would flatter all my girls. Not only were my bridal party dresses purchased here but both my mother and mother-in-law found beautiful dresses as well. My mom was nervous about shopping for a dress but the ladies at this store made her feel comfortable and she actually enjoyed the process. At one of my many appointments I fell in love with a stunning headband. However, I procrastinated and didn't order early enough. The bridal manager worked with me and was able to get the headpiece of my dreams in time for my wedding.The service I received and the experience I had in doing business with Weddings by Design was completely professional and beyond enjoyable.
