It's really sad to see animals locked away in cages but the cages seem spacious enough for the animals as they each have their own cubicle with large spaces to move about if they ever need a stretch. The RSPCA supply a very informative booklet on what animals they are holding within their shelter and display at least a paragraph about these animals personally in order for you to have knowledge about their background, what breed they are and their age all for your reassurance. They have selected viewing times if ever you wish or think of adopting any of these animals so that you can bond with them.

He was actually quite good - although this is a bit of a surprise to me and my Mom, as he now spends his retirement loafing about on the sofa, begging for tripe sticks and being tickled under the chin. We got Dave from Daybreaks Kennels which is home to the Perry Barr Retired Greyhound Trust and which is run by an amazing woman called Ruth Boswell. Dave was a bit of a state when we first laid eyes on him - without wanting to lay on the schmaltz too much years of racing had rendered him threadbare of tail, gammy of tooth and with what one could only describe as a 'lean and hungry look'. However, with Ruth's care - and lashings of tripe sticks, Dave made really good progress and although I'm obviously biased I think its fair to say he is a really handsome, jolly dog now. As for Daybreaks itself - the kennels are open daily and you can arrange a viewing by phoning ahead. If you're feeling particularly soppy you can also check out their website where you will be greeted by photos of dogs who need a home. This is a brilliant place run by a dedicated, extremely lovely team - they are always happy to offer advice on homing procedure, guidance on the right sort of dog for you and will happily talk to you after you've taken your dog home. As well as the kennels there's a shop that sells collars, leads, beds, food, toys and well...all sorts really.

Thankfully Mankind has moved on since then, but people's attitude's towards animals seems to have remained static. Visiting Birmingham dogs home for me is what I imagine to be a similar experience. Birmingham Dogs Home tries to re home unwanted dogs. Perhaps dogs that were bought as a fashion item, only for the owner to realise that it takes a lot of effort to look after a beautiful animal. I cried when I walked around to look at the dogs. I thought I would be happy to see lots of beautiful animals, but all I saw was pain, desperation and misery. It is not the fault of the staff, they try their hardest and do a phenomenal job. However in this day and age we should understand that animals have rights and to keep them in a cage is a travesty to the innate beauty of life.

If you are thinking of getting a dog then I would recommend and suggest that you go here to help rehome a poor, unwanted mutt. If you are going to Brum dogs home to get a dog then here are a few things to consider... 1) This is dog jail. If you like dogs it will break your heart and can be quite upsetting, so bear this in mind if you are taking kids (or big kids). It also means that it is VERY hard to make a choice, let alone the right choice, because almost every dog you see will give you those sad eyes and you'll want to take him or her home. So, I'd recommend that you bear the emotional strain in mind before you go and think about what kind of dog you want - this will help you narrow down your search 2) You can take home dogs there and then, but they (quite rightly) have certain checks and measure in place to ensure that you can provide the right environment for the dog. If you live in rented accommodation you will need a letter of consent from your landlord and if you have a garden you will need a 6 foot fence that fully encloses it.

Hope Rescue is a bit different to most rescue charities because it's primarily a 'co-ordinating'…read morerescue rather than housing the dogs themselves. Its main role is in getting dogs out of emergency situations, such as if they are going to be put to sleep unnecessarily, and Hope then works to find a suitable rescue space for them with other reputable rescue centres such as Dogs Trust and the RSPCA, as well as smaller local rescues and breed-specific rescues. Hope Rescue then also covers transportation to the dog's new rescue centre. Most of the dogs they deal with are strays from Local Authority pounds which would otherwise be put to sleep after the 7 statutory days they must be kept for. On average they move around 10 dogs a week, but at some times this can peak to as high as 25. They use boarding kennels in Llantrisant and Caerphilly to hold dogs if there is any delay in their rescue space becoming available. And although they're mainly a co-ordinating rescue, they do sometimes end up taking in dogs for rehoming themselves, if they can't secure rescue spaces - for example if the dog has a medical problem, or is very old. Obviously they have kennelling expenses as well as transportation costs to cover, so you can donate to help fund their rescue missions.

Every time I come into Kings Heath Pet Centre I am amazed by the selection and things on offer for…read moremy cats. I had a lot of trouble with my kitten as when he arrived in my home he had fleas. I freaked out and ran down to the pet centre to ask for help on this unpleasant issue. The staff were friendly and did not try to oversell products in an attempt to increase their profit margins. I was sold a spray, a flea comb and a solution to rub into my kitten's skin and fur. Two days later and my kitten is flea free. Thank You Kings Heath Pet Centre. They also have goods for all types of pets and animals, ranging from dogs to your more exotic pets. It is also a great place to bring the kids if you have any. The Cockatoo is one of my main reasons for coming here on un-cat related issues. He/She will quite happily mimic your words if you don't mind looking a little bit silly in front of the other customers. Kings Heath Pet Centre also sells your regular supplies such as litter and food pouches. Their prices are competitive with the larger supermarkets that have the pleasure in buying in vast stock quantities. If you own a pet and live in the vicinity, then Kings Heath Pet Centre is the place for you.

There is a wide range of products for each type of pet, all of my cat and guinea pig needs were well catered for. The staff are friendly and helpful and the prices are reasonable. My main reason for visiting the pet centre was always to see the cute animals, especially the furry little bunny rabbits! *Awww* So cute! There is always a large parrot who occasionally gives people a fright but suddenly squawking or flapping his wings as you go past. Any excuse to go in and I'm there!
