You can take one of the additional walking paths to make for a longer walk which is really beautiful. There were lots of birds to see near the water. Staff in the visitor center were friendly and knowledgeable and they had a large display of animals that you might see in the park. Definitely worth a few hours of your time when you're in the Stevensville area.

As noted by others, Travelers Rest State Park contains the only physically verified campsite of the…read moreLewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. The Park is well worth a visit if you are nearby. There is a ver nice interpretive center, walking trails and access to Lolo creek. I particularly enjoyed the Creek access. Lewis and Clark camped here twice. Once on the first leg of their journey traveling west and then on their return east. On their return the expedition temporarily split up to explore independently. This was the place they split so this is indeed a historical spot. I visited with my children and grandchildren. The kids particularly enjoyed wading in Lolo Creek as did our Labrador Retriever Gigi who retrieved lots of sticks. I am very glad we took the time to visit and highly recommend Travelers Rest Park.

This is only the second site along the Lewis and Clark trail where physical evidence of the Corps…read moreof Discovery has been found. This is one of the few spots where the Corps stopped both on the westward and eastbound legs of their journey. It was a serendipity discovery made when archelogists were trying to calibrate an instrument that detected magnetic anomolies. They moved it about 300 feet from a power line and turned it on. Amazingly, the instrument detected metal traces. By moving it around they found a rectangular area of trace mercury depositions. They had found the latrine for the Corps! The mercury was from soldiers taking a laxative pill called "Dr. Rush's Thunderbolts" that contained mercurous chloride (calomel). In the weeks the Corps camped nearby, the members of the expedition "excreted" enough of the medication to permit a thin layer to be detected. By referring to the Army Field Manual used by Lewis, who did everything by the book, they were able to find the camp, just 200 feet away. There they uncovered some bits of melted lead dropped from making bullets and found evidence of a blacksmith operation. There is an small museum that tells more of the story of Lewis and Clark. Occasionally, you may also find local reenactors who have set up a replica of what the Corps of Discovery's camp might have looked like. When in Lolo, visit Traveler's Rest!

Brooks took me up to Rock Creek yesterday for a magnificent day. No joke- I caught 25 fish and saw…read morea moose. Brooks taught me to fish a few years ago when my dad starting bringing me on his fly fishing trips. Now I come up to Montana to fish with Brooks a couple times per year. Guides everywhere tell me Brooks is the best. He grew up on the rivers in Montana and knows every nook and cranny of the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, Blackfoot, Missouri, and the ever so special Rock Creek. I know that when I'm out with Brooks, if the fish are biting, I'll get as many as the Montana regulars or like yesterday, 25. On my very first trip out, on a cold February day, I caught 7 on the Clark Fork. Brooks has also had me catching a couple trout during snow storm on the Missouri. If you know anything about trout, those are pretty excellent numbers on cold Montana days. And if I'm really lucky (and if you are really lucky), Brooks will cook up an elk burger for lunch. Brooks works with some pretty amazing other guides as well. As an outfitter, he doesn't mess around with guides who don't know rivers or trout, aren't safe, or jerks.

Brooks provided a great experience during our float down the Bitterroot River. We caught several…read morebeautiful trout, including browns, cutthroat, rainbows and hybrids. He knows the river, the hatches and the feeding habits of the fish, so he was able to position us for several dozen strikes. He is an excellent coach who tells you where to cast, when to mend and when to set the hook. After the fish is on, he nets it and then sets you up for the next one. If a hole is productive, he rows back to the sweet spot to give you another shot at it. Brooks is very observant, pointing out four bald eagles, an osprey and some elk during our float. He provided a freshly made lunch, high quality rods and reels, and tied on the best flies and patterns for the current conditions. The river is known for having fallen trees and other hazards, so he used his experience and skills to keep us safe all day. I highly recommend fishing with Brooks next time you want a great fishing and nature experience in western Montana.

His dog pack is incredibly trained and extremely hard working. These dogs are treated like family. My personal favorite dog is Rebel. Rebel is persistent and is rarely outsmarted by even the smartest mature lions. You won't find a better hound hunting experience with any other outfitting company. Dillon is a true houndsman and great guy. Conditions depending on if you will catch a lion/bear but he will not disappoint when it comes to a good experience!

In April of 2018, I contracted with Trapper Peak Outfitters, owned by Mr. Laramy Miller to go on an…read moreelk and mule deer hunt. However, I did not draw a tag for either of these hunts, even though Mr. Miller stated on the phone and in his hunt documentation that these were "GUARANTEED DRAWS". I tried on subsequent occasions to purchase a surplus tag from Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Department with no luck. I spoke to and texted Mr. Miller and he assured me that, in his words, "I will make it right regardless". Since the hunting season did not end until the end of November, I did not try to contact Mr. Miller until early December. Since then I have sent certified letters, called, and texted Mr. Miller. All with no response. When I tried to access the Trapper Peak Outfitters website I found it had been shut down. I think Mr. Miller is trying to hide from his obligations. I want my deposit money returned. Be forewarned about Trapper Peak Outfitters and Mr. Laramy Miller.
