I expected a credit union to have a more member-focused approach, but my experience has been quite the opposite. The process has felt EXTREMELY outdated, rigid, and far less consumer-friendly than I expected for a so called credit union. Despite being a member with a strong income and a history of managing my obligations, I found PenFed unwilling to work with me or consider my circumstances. There was no sense of partnership or willingness to find a reasonable solution. What has been most frustrating is that many financial institutions advertise themselves as being different from traditional credit card companies, but my experience has been that PenFed is even LESS flexible. The emphasis seems to be on policies and procedures rather than helping members who are actively trying to manage their finances responsibly. A credit union should be a place where members feel supported, especially when they are trying to improve their financial situation. Unfortunately, I did not experience that with PenFed. I would encourage anyone considering joining to carefully research their customer service practices and how they handle members who need assistance.... Instead of working with members to find solutions, PenFed will make you jump through hoops and the whole process on what it takes to get approved is VERY non-transparent.... Please do your homework before thinking you will be dealing with a member-focused credit union.

This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a financial institution…read more I refinanced my vehicle with Pentagon Federal Credit Union, and the title process has been unnecessarily frustrating from the beginning. My previous lender confirmed that the lien was released electronically, but PenFed told me I had to go to the title bureau and obtain a physical replacement title myself. I contacted the Cuyahoga County Title Bureau and was told that PenFed could have accessed and printed the title themselves. The representative even described PenFed as being "lazy" for making me handle something the credit union could have completed. After making me take time out of my day to resolve the issue, PenFed did not even provide the address that needed to be placed on the title. I had to continue contacting them just to get basic instructions that should have been provided from the beginning. The lack of communication, clear guidance, and accountability has been unacceptable. I should have checked the reviews for this company before refinancing my auto loan with them. I regret choosing PenFed and would not recommend them based on this experience.

While walking down P street in the city I noticed their ATM and I though hmmm I've never heard o such a bank. I had already known that so needed to open a new account and the sight of this ATM put my thoughts into action. A couple of days later, I came back to the same location of where the ATM however I soon discovered that there is no branch there. So I looked the place up online and found out yet again, there's really no branches anywhere, except for one! I thought to myself- This is perfect! I called first before I came to ye branch in Tyson's Corner. Get this- the person who I spoke with is the same person who is helping me setup the account some three hours later. Over never experienced that kind of service at any bank in my entire life. I have a good feeling that things will go well with my new account!

My fault. BUT this T&C is BURIED in their disclosure (see photo). 3) went to immediately to the bank to close my account. Nice lady helped me, gave me my funds in cashier's checks. 4) after leaving I was called by the bank because they hadn't given me the appropriate documentation to sign. Asked me to return but I couldn't, since I was taking my kid to practice. I said I would try to come the next day, but I didn't know when because I didn't have my work phone in front of me. 5) bank called again and I didn't answer so they left a message. Said if I didn't come back next day they threatened to withhold my money by canceling payment on the cashier's checks. 6) bank called yet again a few minutes later. Kicked off the call with a friendly "this is on a recorded line" opening for legal reasons and reiterated the threat. Nice lady who clearly felt bad that I would have to come back, but hey, if I wanted my money, I'd have to waste more time dealing with them despite my good faith attempt to sever ties because of PNC's error. Worked in customer service many years. I know people make mistakes and I know rules exist for a reason. I was unfailingly polite when closing my account. PNC didn't need to threaten to withhold my deposits, but clearly if you don't follow their rules, they will use it against you, but if PNC screws up, you should expect to bend over backwards to accommodate them, even if its to get YOUR money.

The receptionist offered for me to stand at the counter and open an account online, but a further discussion had to be by appointment only. No walk ins are accepted here at all. I had paid off a lot of previous debt so I demonstrated the ability to pay previous obligations. I literally should have been their ideal client. But they denied my $1 million+ revenue business any line of credit (LOC), even a modest $50K. I went to another bank and got a $100K line of credit that was limited only because they were freaked out by Chain Bridge Bank's refusal to lend. A year later, I got a $250K line of credit with my new bank. Chain Bridge Bank appears to cater only to political campaigns. I fail to understand this since that's a very very risk undertaking. But they don't seem to care about almost sure-thing local businesses that are growing rapidly. And now we are 3 times the size only a few years later due to no help from them since they refused to extend a LOC.

Eventually I went to this branch explicitly to make the same request in person. I changed all contact info to my own. Although the manager and banker were polite & helpful, I found out after leaving that not only did the person who was supposed to be completely separated from my account get a voicemail letting him know I'd been at Citibank, they also continued sending him statements via email disclosing my new address. This was a huge breach of privacy and trust. Disturbing experience. I would not recommend Citibank to anyone.
