That usually means choosing a fast food chain location. These chains serve their purpose but aren't much fun. This place popped up on Yelp and turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The location is a short drive off the highway into downtown Sidney, taking about 4 or 5 minutes to get there from Exit 92. It was located in a retro building on the main intersection in town cross corner from the County Courthouse. Approaching from the West on Court St., it looked a little divey. It looks more pleasantly vintage from the Ohio St. side, which is actually its storefront. Our visit to this place prompted me to do some quick research. The Spot has been in business for over 100 years, opening in 1907. A fire destroyed the original building in 1940 and according to the local paper, "the current Art Moderne-style building was completed in 1941 and still features its original white porcelain tile, mid-century neon sign and iconic diner layout." It truly has a retro feel inside, going more or less for a 1950s aura where you would not be surprised to see Richie Cunningham sitting at a booth drinking a malt. Although the jukebox is digital, the upgrades enacted by the new owners who took over last year generally seem to be spot on. While it looks retro, the infrastructure is in nice shape with a clean, tidy appearance. It's a pleasant place for a meal. The format is walk-up-and-order. The girl working the counter was polite and efficient. To be fair in context, however, we walked in around 6:45 PM on a Wednesday night an hour-and-a-quarter before closing. It was not at all busy when we entered with one party there finishing their meal and only two others who walked in before we left. Hence, efficiency would be expected with no other customers to be served, but I'll still note the good work. The food was up quickly without any issues. We sat in 1950s comfort to enjoy our meal. I had the Turkey Club. It was quite good. I ordered mine with Onion Rings as my wife wanted to split these with me. She had the Swiss Lad sandwich, which she said was also very tasty. We split an Iced Tea which was likewise quite good. With everything, we spent $25.48 for dinner. At less than $13 per person, I was happy with that value. We'll certainly look for this place again when we are passing through Sidney.

The chicken salad was scooped with what appeared to be an ice cream scoop and simply plopped onto the bread. The result was a bland sandwich with almost no spice or flavor. The mashed potatoes were presented the same way--scooped and unappealing. Overall, the presentation was cafeteria-level at best, and I've had better sandwiches in hospital cafeterias. My wife ordered the Firecracker Chicken. Her side salad was tiny and unremarkable, and while the chicken leg itself tasted decent, it was still just a sauced chicken leg. At $22, it felt significantly overpriced. 17 West likely wouldn't survive in a larger city with real competition. In the New Bremen area, however, it benefits from having very little rivalry, which allows it to stay in business despite the clear mismatch between its prices and the quality and presentation of the food.

The pickled onions provided a nice acidity to the dish paired with the blueberry sauce which was absolutely my favorite! The cornbread was a little dry but that's my only criticism from the entire dinner. For dessert we ordered the lemon blueberry meringue. All the best flavors in a large enough portion for three people to share. They even provided complimentary chocolates which our 5 year old devoured! Would absolutely revisit!

Its sleek lines and modern structure stand out among the modest buildings that surround it. Every inch of its interior and exterior are detailed in lavish sophistication. We stayed in the Spa Suite- a beautiful, spacious room with a deep soaking tub perfect for relaxing. Snacks, drinks and card games are within easy reach, tempting you from their station on the oversized desk (for a charge, of course). We skipped slipping into our robes and ordering room service and went down to the hotel bar instead. The bar offers a number of handcrafted cocktails, I was so conflicted about which to order that I told the bartender I would just go down the list- and she happily obliged. Dinner hadn't quite started yet so we ordered food from a limited lunch menu and made friends with the bar patrons. After all, it's still a small town and everyone around is incredibly friendly. Unfortunately, due to my overly enthusiastic cocktail buffet, I didn't make it to dinner. Luckily, I had a gorgeous room to stumble back to, and when I woke up, the minibar snacks and drinks truly saved my night. I absolutely think you get great value for the price of a stay here. It is run single handedly by one guy and his name is Dave. He opens around 2 PM every day. He told us the days of 10 or 11 AM opening are gone. He's gotta sleep! Kinda divey inside, dark, funky decor. It's big with lots of seating, pool table, a jukebox and TV. Canned and bottled beer, soft drinks, full bar. Big menu. My husband got some chicken gizzards which he enjoyed. We had eaten earlier so I didn't have anything. I'll gladly come back again for a bite to eat and some good conversation with Dave.
