Made me feel dizzy everywhere I looked. We love the large cheese curds here! And we had the sweet potato tots, which were amazing! I really enjoyed the new food menu. We all loved our dishes. Drink menu is.... Ehhh. Especially the Too Buku martini. It was supposed to have green chiles and cilantro. But all I tasted was sweet, pretty tasteless lychee. First time here tonight though I have know of it for years I went in for the fish fry on a carry out order. Everything was amazing. The fish is top tier, everything is house made for the most part it seems. And for only $15 it was so worth it. Very kind staff, very friendly and laid back ambiance inside. 5/5 for sure. PERFECT date night spot. We sat by the window in the front which was cozy but still enough room to eat comfortably. We shared cheese curds, poutine, and fried veggies. The fried veggies were pretty good. Poutine with the brisket was amazing. But the real star were the cheese curds. Like another review said LIFE ALTERING. For our main dish we had the steak sandwich. Greens were plentiful and delicious. Ended up saving half the sandwich for leftovers and it was just as delicious reheated. Came on a Saturday night around 6 and had no issue getting a table. I REALLY ENJOY their Phorench Dip sandwich. It's like an American roast beef with some key exceptional upgrades: 1) soft but firm and chewy bread holds up to the dip 2) the dip is based on Pho, a Vietnamese flavorful sauce starring star anise, cilantro and MANY other flavors. I won't claim it's authentic, because I have no idea. I can only claim delicious and it's surprisingly accurate to sauces I've eaten in NORTHERN China, which might tell you something. Suggest replacing jalapeno with any of the common Asian peppers. 3) love the quaint place. There's a small stage in back, which may or may not get good use (I hope it does). Service is friendly and professional. It's OK to dine alone. I'm no expert on Poutine but it's also good comfort food. We stopped in Wendigo for the Bada Bam chicken sandwich, but were told ( after we ordered an appetizer of fried cheese curds) that they no longer serve that sandwich and did not have the new chicken sandwich replacement yet. And you know I really wouldn't have minded this we all know that restaurants change their menus, but it was still on the menu and on the website. I ended up with the special which was a candied bacon turkey club and my better half ended up with the grilled cheese and fries. I found it to be way too much for for me but taste good, I just ate too many cheese curds which I highly recommend, bring friends because the order is definitely enough for 4 people. The staff was friendly, but never had any follow up to see how we were doing or to refill our drinks. Maybe we were there on an off night, it was Wednesday right around dinner time. Making reservations online is a little odd, they don't confirm instantly, but a message says, "we'll get back to you if confirmed." My confirmation went to my junk mail, so be sure to check there. You definitely want a reservation though, as the restaurant is very popular, especially if there is an event at the Stoughton Opera House. The menu is small, but my Wendi Melt was delicious, and the sweet potato fries were crispy perfection. The waitress didn't pay much attention to our table, until the next party who needed it arrived and we were hustled out. read more

We were visiting from Texas and staying nearby. This cute place is downtown and recommended by a local. The menu is limited. We had the fried curds, excellent with a glass of wine and a specialty drink from the bar. I had the bacon burger & my husband had the steak sandwich, our side was a huge fresh salad. Two of the three meals were very good. One, the Mac & cheese was very salty, edible but salty. We should have complained, but our friend didn't say anything to us until we were just finishing up. I live very close to Wendigo and it has taken me three years to try it! I decided that when a friend came to visit, we were going to try it! We went earlier in the evening and there was only one other table. It is so spacious in there. When you look from the street, you'd never guess all the space. There is even an adorable little stage in the back. The menu is short and sweet, which makes it very easy to decide. We got the cheese curds for an appetizer and you could tell they were fresh and homemade. So good! And I cannot say enough how much you get for $10! We took some home and it still looked like a full order! I had the buttermilk breaded chicken tenders, and they were some of the best I've ever had. Thin and crispy, just the way I love them. Okay, where to start with this one? The restaurant certainly has some rough spots. Many menu items were unavailable on my last visit. Heads up to the owner: you never present a menu where entire sections are off-limits. Print new menus--don't tease us with (amazing sounding) food we can't order. And the sole server was professional, attentive, and prompt but clearly overworked; a warmer attitude would be welcome. But the food. Oh, Good God the food! How is what could become the best restaurant in the the Madison area (and all of Dane County) located in Stoughton? Where did they find this chef? That the Caesar salad--the leafy staple of American cuisine--was exceptional seems almost impossible. The warm poached egg paired with very fresh cold kale was superb. A brilliant and delicious take on something that seems to defy innovation. The poutine (ordered with a well-prepared brisket, which Eno Vino has never managed to do) could have been served in Quebec's best bistros. I've never had poutine like this in the US. The hell with your cholesterol levels, it's worth the indulgence. The "Refined Menu" was shamefully unavailable but the Wendi Melt ribeye steak sandwich with carmelized shallots was delicious. The meat was perfectly seasoned, had obviously been allowed to properly sit, and kept separated from the toast until serving so there was none of the all too familiar sogginess frequently encountered in these situations. And the only side-dish worth considering is the green bean casserole, which has absolutely no business being so good. How is green bean casserole elevated like this? (Presumably by being perfectly prepared and cooked.) My only disappointment: my medium-rare ordered steak was served medium. A downside is the wine list. It's small and well curated but the tiny quantities when ordered by the glass are ridiculously stingy for the prices. I see a James Beard Award in the chef's future. Even as it stands right now, this is arguably among Dane County's top ten restaurants and without question worth the drive to Stoughton. My only concern is this absolute hidden jewel will be discovered by hordes of Madison foodies, who will make getting reservations impossible. And a word about the decor: the restaurant has exactly the right look and vibe. In summary, the food prices are extremely reasonable and this is the _first and only_ restaurant I've encountered in or near Madison that I'd bet would stay in business in Chicago or NYC. Update: Definitely my favorite restaurant..nestled in the heart of quaint downtown Stoughton, Wendigo does not disappoint from it's fun art decor to locally sourced ingredients used to prepare meals! It's a small choice of menu options but the food is made very well! Try the chicken Florentine, pork belly club, or cannibal burger! This was my first time here & it is probably going to be my new favorite. The food was really delicious and the drinks are well made. We had a Moscow mule and ginger mojito. We had high hopes for Wendigo based on other reviews, but it didn't live up to the hype. When the first person in our party arrived she let the hostess know that we had a reservation. The hostess responded that she didn't have any reservations, turned, and walked away. We hung out at the bar until our full party arrived and were eventually seated - the place was less than half full, with probably only about 6 tables occupied. Despite this, it took an extremely long time to get our drinks and a high chair. Over half of the menu items had changed since its printing, so ordering was a bit confusing, and when the food arrived, the quality was mixed. My pork belly hash was good (but small), one omelet came overcooked and burnt. At one point a server came by with coffee refills and started pouring into a cup without asking, I let her know it was decaf and she stopped, then tried to do the same with my cup (I was drinking tea). She turned and left the table without asking if we wanted refills for our decaf and tea or offering to come back. When it came time to pay, we asked to split our check, but apparently splitting it three ways was too confusing for the server. She ended up doing it, after we identified each person's meals on the menu, but not with a good attitude. The inside was nice, and they have a cute little stage area, but I won't be back. read more

The vibe here is wonderful, and I love the concept. It is really cool to see this happening in Stoughton. Unfortunately some of the food missed the mark for us. The cheese curds were liquid encased in fried dough. Literally liquid cheese. Melty, drippy, and very messy to eat. Many of the curds were actually empty, because the cheese had spilled out of the dough in little puddles. We are cheese curd fanatics, and the curds were by far the most disappointing part of our meal. However, so many people rave about the curds, that I wonder if we got a bad batch? Might be worth trying the curds one more time, just to be sure. There were two vegetarians in our party. The fried tomato po' boy was delicious. But the vegetarian pasta* was surprisingly bland, despite the many veggies. I think it needed fewer moving parts (maybe ditch the artichoke hearts, which can overpower more subtle flavors) and more attention to the sauce. *The pasta doesn't appear to be on the menu anymore -- actually, it doesn't look like they currently have a vegetarian entree right now, other than a sandwich or mac and cheese. Our drinks were okay -- interesting ingredient combinations, but awkward proportions that meant one flavor often overpowered the others. All this to say, it seems like the intention and creativity are there to make Wendigo a really special place. I hope they succeed, because we love having a spot like this in downtown Stoughton. We'll be back to try it again -- and will hope for a better cheese curd situation. read more

Amazing food! Had the cheese curds and they were so puffy and so different. Best ever! Too bad they've already run out of calamari and shrimp at 10pm-a little bit too early for a night place. The Scotch Egg is a new addition to the menu and is the best Scotch Egg I have ever had. Wrapped in Lamb it is perfectly soft boiled so the yolk is runny. The root vegetable sauce and sprig of Rosemary perfectly compliments this dish. The Brussels Sprout flat bread with Pistachio spread is a perfect compliment to the star of the show, that fabulous Scotch Egg. This is a really great restaurant located in Stoughton's downtown. It is an awesome place to go on a date, or just for a casual dinner and drinks with a few close friends. Never been to Stoughton before, but we were headed to an event at the opera house downtown. Reviews for Wendigo looked good so we made a reservation for 5. The place is super cute. We were seated at a table by the front window. Nice view. It was packed for a Thursday night. Drinks first. One friend ordered "Love is in the Air" which was a vodka elderflower concoction and she liked it. My Apple cinnamon old fashioned was decent but the spice was a bit harsh. Everyone else enjoyed the nice beer selection. Appetizers: the "pigs in ze blanket" were devoured in 2 seconds and the flatbread was excellent. Dinner was kind of a bust, for me at least. I ordered a sandwich called the Wendi melt that was bland and fatty. The fries were standard but tasted pretty great. My friends seemed happy with their burgers and salads. Wow, where to start? I happened to be in Stoughton for Wendigo's (public) opening day and I will certainly return just for another meal! I ordered the Carnivore burger because, well, my friend had already heard of it. So without really knowing what it was, I threw caution aside and ordered it. That burger was huge (and messy)! Apparently it had 4, maybe 5 different meats in that patty... Meat inside of meat! Not for the faint of heart! It's 4 hours later and I still can't think to eat anything else, still too full. My friend let me try one of her sweet corn cobs (unfortunately I can't recall the menu name), but it had a (slightly spicy) sauce on it (sauce on corn, I never would have thought...) and it was delicious! Great as a lunch or appetizer! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Each one having tasted menu items, they were able to rave about our selections to get us even more excited. Even the bartender mentioned how he couldn't wait to have some of the food for dinner later. Another nice touch is that they bring water to every table and leave you with a large (and classy) bottle of water so you're never without! They also have a good alcohol selection (just saying). Decided to try this place last night w/ the in-laws. It was AWESOME!! The mixed cocktails were unique and delicious. I had the watermelon one (super awesome)!! We decided to try a selection of appetizers because there were so many we wanted to try. Meat platter = awesome and huge (could have used more bread tho) Fried Cheese Curds = AMAZING (especially w/ the homemade ranch dressing) Mini Corn dogs = Yummy -- super soft and flakey breading. Shrimp and calamari fritters -- these were yummy but weren't my favorite on the menu. Too much breading...it could also have been that was stuffed-full by the time we started at these. ha ha ha! We also had this pickled beat salad which had large crumbles of fresh goat cheese. It was so refreshing and delicious. The goat cheese...yum!! Last but not least -- we ended with the homemade apple crisp with this caramel sauce and ice cream....to...die...for. This place was amazing and I woujdl highly recommend it. Where have I been? 65 reviews! I just heard about this place because I purchased the Madison city tin. It is nestled in historic downtown Stoughton. I was impressed by the small, yet intriguing menu. I ordered the beer battered cheese curds. They did not skimp! None of the curds are bite-sized. They are juicy and large. For $8 it is a steal. The sriracha aioli is nice for people who want something other than traditional ranch. They have several home infused liquors. I ordered the Wendi-melt with the green bean casserole. The casserole was good, but keep in mind it is done with their own twist. I LOVED that I did not have to get fries! I also had the option of mac and cheese at no additional cost. It was really hard to make choices. The melt was amazing! Prime rib and harvati. It was so juicy and did not need any au jus. I just can not stop thinking about it. I felt so great in there. OH! I ordered homemade lemonade as my beverage. Sweet, sour and amazing. I can not wait to go back. The portions were nice without being huge. Give this place a try, I can not imagine you will regret it. Service wise, they are very hands off. It is a relaxed setting and there a tons of people who will help. The owner is the hostess and the busser. She never stopped and we had great service. A coworker of mine had spoken well of Wendigo so when we were planning to see a show at The Stoughton Opera House we decided to give it a try. And the results of our experience there were a resounding SO GOOD! Sarah Jane was our server and we loved her. She was attentive and fun and quirky (I love quirky) and got us out of there on time for our concert. We hope to have her again. The atmosphere/ambiance was great - beautiful artwork (local artist) and gorgeous wood throughout. It was a bit loud with it being a Friday night and there's really nothing to absorb the sound, but we managed to communicate with our friends at the table with no problem. Our drinks were nothing to write home about. I had a vodka tonic and my husband had the lemonade. They were fine - nothing special. We started off with the cheese curds, which came with both a siracha mayo and ranch. The curds were pretty close to perfect - lightly battered, crunchy, buttery and nicely seasoned. The 2 sauce option was great. The ranch was exactly what I wanted (and it's some of the best ranch I've had in a long time) and my husband wanted the siracha mayo so that couldn't have worked out better. We don't make a habit of this, but we both ended up ordering the Clubhouse sandwich with fries for our entrees. The toasted sandwich was rich with many textures and perfectly balanced. The smoked turkey with melted cheddar, pork belly and lemon basil mayo all married together in a way that rendered us speechless. We just kept nodding at each other and smiling in our food bliss. Neither of us could finish our meals so Sarah Jane boxed them up, wrote what was in each box and dated them. Very thoughtful! I look forward to trying other dishes at Wendigo (especially the Cannibal burger) and may even see about requesting Sarah Jane as our server. My husband and I really enjoyed this place. We came here for brunch and it was pretty quiet which we didn't mind at all. Our server was really sweet and friendly. My husband had the WBLT (W stands for WAFFLE!) and I had a delicious chorizo dish. I ordered a bloody Mary which was spiced with Sriracha. That was not my favorite. They are actually super kid friendly and had toys and books for my 11 month old to play with. They also are supporters of breastfeeding so I call on all my breastfeeding mama's to come here and support them too! The prices are decent as well.
