They mostly serve burgers, chicken wings, salads, and have great seafood options for their traditional Fish Fry Fridays! I love ordering their crispy fried chicken wings and always request them to be topped with their delicious irresistible Cajun seasoning which gives the wings a nice extra kick that is really satisfying! My husband and I enjoy many menu items such as the boneless wings, fried shrimp, and their sandwiches. I was also pleasantly surprised at how amazing their salads are. Their salads were a good portion size and fresh! We popped in on night 2 of the NFL draft, which is why we bellied up to a high top in the bar area. Nitty Gritty is more sports bar than anything, but if the bar is not your scene, they have several dining spaces inside and out. We started with a couple of beers and cocktails, and while we reviewed the dedicated "birthday shot book", we decided to stick with standard drinks...but the birthday shot thing is apparently a big deal here! My buddy went local beer from the tap and I went gin & tonic. Bad call on my part, as even though that is a basic cocktail, this is not a cocktail bar. The drink was not good, so second round I went Spotted Cow as well. All was right in the world in that moment. For food, we went quintessential bar food with wings and burgers. My buddy got the Smokehouse Burger, which is their house-bbq burger served on Texas toast. He sided it with the fries and noted that both were decent, not great, but also not terrible. Both lacked seasoning, especially the burger patty itself. I opted for the wings, black and blue dry rub to be specific. The wings were good size and fried well, very crispy and meaty for a wing. The seasoning, while present, was not very flavorful. I expected a bit more from a Cajun based rub. Food wise, it was just okay. Service was a hit and miss throughout the evening. While the place was not busy, the service was a bit slow for the amount of staff we noticed. We waited on refills and re-orders a bit longer than normal, especially sitting the bar area. This location has been here for a while and it shows in parts of the building interior and exterior. While conditionally certain areas need some love, the spaces were all clean and well kept. Overall, Nitty Gritty was okay. Seemed like your standard local sports bar with mid-level food and service. I looked at the Reuben and said where's the beef? Seriously, it was not a Reuben you would expect, with a small amount of corned beef. The corned beef was slightly tender, but not tender enough, and their sauce on top was so limited, that it was a very dry sandwich. I chose the beer battered fries. They were okay, but still dry. It was an overload of fries, so much that I couldn't finish them. My husband chose the Alamo burger, sans the BBQ sauce. I am not sure why they placed the mozzarella wedge on top of the burger instead of inside the burger. Correction, he said there were two mozzarella wedges on top, but he ate them outside the burger. Things only got worse when another person in our group ordered a sweet Old Fashioned--a classic Wisconsin drink--and Charlie responded with a disrespectful comment about how "you really are new at drinking- it's past 8 o'clock!" Giving a hard time for ordering a mixed drink. When we expressed our concerns about how we were being treated, the conversation became argumentative rather than constructive. The final straw was being told to the 26 year old- "I'll serve you, but I won't take responsibility if you get caught," despite no valid issue being identified with the ID. At that point, we decided to leave rather than continue the interaction! We will not be back! Never bring your family visitors to this bar.
