Their approach is more laid back so if you want more accountability and suggestions, communicate that upfront. The office is located in the loop, accessible by a number of trains and buses. Sign in at the lobby and take the elevator up to the seventh floor. Turn right from the elevator and its the first door to your left. Betty Contorer is a complete incompetent. She does not own a computer. Does not do research. Is…read moreout-of-date and out-of-touch. My wife was misdiagnosed by her, and her condition progressively worsened almost to the point of suicide. My wife is in a completely different treatment program with a completely different approach. This woman has damaged my life greatly and almost destroyed it. I'm updating what I wrote a year ago because the more I think about the situation the angrier and more disgusted I become. When people hear about Dr. Contorer's approach to my wife's issues, they are appalled and incredulous. My wife was having difficulty distinguishing reality. Betty not only didn't recognize this as a problem but helped to enable it. Her treatment defied basic common sense. My wife saw Betty for over a decade and progressively deteriorated. The evidence of her incompetence is that my wife's new treatment is exactly the opposite of what she received from Betty...and it's helping. I can not emphasize enough to stay away. Updating once again...regrettably my former wife (we were separated at the time) did end up taking her own life on 5/19/2017. Not putting the blame on Dr. Contorer, but her lack of insight was not beneficial to her struggle.

I saw her for a few sessions, and while she was easy to talk to about most things, I was not entirely comfortable with her. I also felt like she did not necessarily "get" me or where I was coming from, and she did not provide as much feedback as I would have liked. She assigns homework for clients to work on, including purchasing and completing workbooks. That was a new experience for me, and I did not feel it helped me any. I'm not saying this as a negative about her or the service she provides, only that it was not right for me. Dr. Contorer also worked as a school teacher and mentioned that many of her clients are teachers as well. I did not know this going in, but appreciated her insight from that angle (I am also a teacher). I would recommend her practice to others, but would also mention how I felt about my own experience with her.

Many mental health professionals aren't well educated on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. After being initially diagnosed with general anxiety disorder. I truly felt there was more to what was going on with my mental health. Many people, including professionals are only familiar with OCD as it is shown in the media. People think OCD only manifests itself in physical compulsions like checking doors or the oven multiple times. Many aren't aware of what is now known as "Purely Obsessional" OCD in which the compulsions are internal. After hearing my symptoms and day to day dealings with this nightmare, she was able to properly diagnose me with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She has even helped me with advice and referrals after I haven't been to a session in years out of the kindness of her heart. I highly recommend her if your currently struggling.
