Today I finally took the time to walk inside a gallery I have been acquainted with in terms of…read moretheir outdoor sculptures for a very long time but somehow or another never quite made it inside. Probably because being a true Yelper I was more focused on the nearby restaurants, of which there are many good choices. What a lovely experience it was to break my pattern and discover this hidden in plain site gem of a gallery. I was mostly aware of this gallery because of the large beautifully rendered sculpture of "A Fiddler on the Roof" that I discovered outside the gallery many years ago. I frequent a French restaurant across the street from here and have admired the sculpture for many years now. I vaguely remember trying to go to the gallery previously but it was closed at the time. Today I got to meet the sculptor, Yaacov Heller, and see more of his other works of art which range from sculpture to paintings, and jewelry. It was a true treat and I treated myself to a uniquely designed Star of David that is artistically merged with the word love and elegantly hung from a curly choker in sterling silver. I have to admit that I was rather shocked to find that I could afford it. A very pleasant surprise indeed. I was also stunned that the artist took the time to talk to us himself despite having a store clerk present, especially since he originally told us after coming out to greet us personally that he would be working in the back of the store. He gave us a tour of his store after we walked around and examined his vast collection of art by ourselves. He also talked to us about a documentary that was made about him and told us it would be airing very soon on Facebook, etc., and asked us if we would be interested in receiving an invitation. We are. He even played us a part of the documentary on a large screen in his store that told the story behind a particularly extraordinary sculpture of his that was of the hand of a surgeon holding an anatomically correct heart that the surgeon himself supplied input on. There is a very real and personal connection to Yaacov Heller and the story behind the piece itself. In addition, he called our attention to a nearby park and memorial outside his store and asked us if we had seen it. He had a photograph of it inside his store near his bust of Benjamin Ferencz, the Nuremberg prosecutor, the original bust is now in the International Criminal Court in The Hague. We were not aware of the park and after leaving his delightful gallery we went to check it out. The park is called, "The Garden of Humanity" and is a memorial designed by Yaacov Helier as a memorial to the 6 genocides of the 20th century. There is a large sculpture made by Yaacov Heller in the center of "The Garden of Humanity." The garden also has 14 hand carved stone benches that have relevant quotes that have inspired and continue to inspire Yaacov Helier. A short film was made about Yaacov Helier and Ben Ferencz and the making of the bust of Ben Ferencz. It is entitled, "Two Heads are Better than One: Making of the Ben Ferencz Bust. It is accessible via Vimeo. Last but not least, Gallery 22 has two dogs inside it which were a true delight to us dog lovers. They were friendly, entertaining and added to our enjoyment of our experience here. There is something here for everyone and it is well worth the visit and checking out. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I had a little buyers remorse about spending this much on a piece of art and Joan and Alice were so understanding and gave me time to make up my mind. We agreed to go forward w the purchase. When we got the sculpture it was in a large crate, packaged securely and arrived in one piece. We also received the certificate of authenticity and care instructions provided by the Artist. They showcase things in unique mediums and the types of "playful" art that I appreciate. The helpful staff can tell you about each artist and the inspiration behind the pieces. We hadn't planned to buy anything, but I must have been intoxicated by pretty shiny things, or I was suffering from overstimulation due to the almost-forgotten-scents of the mall. Either way, I was not online shopping and I was thrilled! So when I saw this cool/happy/sweet otter pic that fits in with another piece I have by the same artist, it was meant to be mine. --side note, 15 years ago I saw an otter in my yard for the first time. Having never seen an otter in the wild in my life, I started yelling that there was a seal outside. I've never lived that down. So the otters seemed appropriate.-- ANYWAY, I'm very pleased with my shopping experience in this little gallery. They offer a variety of price points and unique gift items for the special people in your life. Stop by and I dare you to not smile when you look at their ever changing collections.

After a brief hiatus in 2020 due to COVID, the event returned in 2021 in a smaller format at The Backyard before expanding to larger venues like Revolution Live and the War Memorial Auditorium. I recently attended the Indie Craft Bazaar at the historic War Memorial Auditorium, which has just undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation by the Florida Panthers. The venue--flexible enough to host concerts and large-scale events--was the perfect setting. The bazaar runs from 12-5 PM and features over 95 vendors, with free admission and parking. It's also very family-friendly. I had a great time browsing a wide variety of handmade, artisan, vintage, and locally made goods. There was everything from jewelry, live plants, and clothing to crystals, candles, bath products, accessories, stickers, crochet flowers, baked goods, and stationery. One standout for me was the upcycled concert T-shirts from Backstage Trends. They also offer fun extras like free swag bags for the first 100 guests, DIY activities, and food and drinks from The Federal. Plus, you can even go ice skating next door at the Baptist Health IcePlex. It's easy to pair the Indie Craft Bazaar with other activities in Holiday Park and make a full day of it. The Tropical Postcard Club is keeping the tradition of postcards alive. Have you ever sent or…read morereceived a postcard? It is a simple way to share a moment, and people have been doing it since the early days of the U.S. Postal System. Postcards became popular during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, collecting postcards is a hobby called deltiology. Deltiology is thriving in Deerfield Beach thanks to the Tropical Postcard Club, which was founded in 2012 by Michael Hopkins. Collectors get together to trade, buy, sell, and talk about postcards. They meet on the second Saturday of each month at the Old School House in Deerfield Beach, next to City Hall. I stopped by one of the meetups and found a friendly and enthusiastic group displaying their collections. There was a huge mix of postcards from all over, with prices ranging from just a few cents to a couple of dollars. Along with the postcards, they were also selling stamps, patches, and vintage magazines. They even had complimentary refreshments. Everyone was so welcoming and happy to talk about their collections. I especially liked reading some of the messages on the backs of the mailed postcards. It felt like a link to the past. This was such a charming experience, and I had a wonderful time.
