When I developed a medical emergency during our stay Liz and Sheila responded by assisting my wife to and from the hospital over 30 minutes one way away. Their generosity continued the following day providing emergency housing and transportation enabling us to rejoin our group. So Thunder Bay Resort is tops in our mind providing clean, spacious cabins, good food and good entertainment along with a caring staff. Keep up the good work and God bless all you do

Elk Viewing tour and dinner…read more We had no idea what to really expect, but had high hopes for a nice evening. Thunderbay Resort (TBR, for short) exceeded all expectations! We all seated in the Belgian Horse drawn carriages and took off on time for a 60 minute tour over the river and through the woods to dinner. We saw a lot of elk , too. No, these are not wild elk, but they are not domesticated, either. TBR strives to let them thrive as much as possible in a wild atmosphere, but they would never be able to bait them to be in viewing range for the guests if they weren't considered livestock. They openly explain this on the tour. This is not a zoo, folks, you are really in the forests and really viewing some majestic animals in their natural environment. TBR doesn't even intervene with medical assistance as they really let nature do it's thing. Jack (owner of TBR and dad of the chef, Spencer) was our guide. He educated us on the Elk, their history in MI, and of the resort. It was a clear afternoon in the low 30's and after dinner, we all got to experience the clear, dark, star-filled sky in the low 20's. BLANKETS PROVIDED! After dinner's ride was only 15 minutes or so back to the parking lot: A perfect way to cap off the dinner. Oh yeah.. dinner... Fantastic dinner cooked on two antique, wood-fired oven ranges in a beautiful cabin/eating hall decked out in taxidermy and country charm. This is a family run business and worked by the family. They meal is the same one they served when they started this out 30+ years ago. Nothing's changed except the date and building you eat in (it's way bigger now, and has indoor plumbing). The bathrooms are like museums, too. Not just clean, but tons of historical artifacts and knick-knacks to look at. The dinner wine choices are two reds and a white. They are OK. They serve a couple different appetizer wines with your first course and an ice wine with dessert. These were surprisingly good! If you don't want wine, there are soft drinks available and a cash bar for other drinks. This is MI wine, so if you approach it with that in mind, they are pretty good. In all, it's about a 4-4.5 hour experience. Nope, it's not cheap, but you are getting an amazing dinner and magical evening worth every penny. The only thing better would have been falling snow :-) But the stars up here in northeast MI are vivid since you are in the middle of the woods with no close cities anywhere near, so that was also part of the magic.

WARNING - Bed Bugs in Duplex 10 at Jacks Landing…read more I want to start by saying I have stayed at Jacks every year for the past 22 years and have always enjoyed our vacations until this year. We mostly stayed in Duplex 10 but have also stayed at the waterfront cabins and Anglers Hideaway. This year we stayed the week of July 6th in Duplex 10. We discovered a bed bug issue towards the end of the week. We started getting red bite marks and waking up to find blood on the sheets. Upon further inspection we discovered live bed bugs and a lot of black/red stains on the box springs of all three beds and evidence on the futon. We immediately notified the management and were extremely disappointed in the response. They said they always clean the rooms and have never seen evidence of bed bugs. The offered us a $150 gift certificate for next year and told us one of the managers was going to the store to get "stuff" to clean it up right away. When we pushed for a full refund they said "they don't know where they came from" insinuating that we brought them with us. This is a very big infestation and not hard to find once we looked closer. All four people who stayed in the cabin had upwards of 50+ bites appear once we were home and started looking closer. We kick ourselves for not inspecting the bed upon arrival but after 22 years you tend to trust a place. I understand that these things happen but the response from the manager was the worst part. She said she had them before and it was not a big deal to get rid of them. They insinuated we brought them. Worst of all I believe they are going to try to "clean" it themselves. From what I read (and I have not read a lot) bed bugs are difficult to eliminate, and my guess is they will continue to be a problem at Jacks. I want to raise awareness to all potential guests at Jack that bed bugs were in Duplex 10 to be very cautious if staying at Jacks Landing

It's the kind of serenity your spirit needs, A place that's nostalgic, a throw back in time. It's the kind of place you learn to appreciate although you may complain about the vintage cooking utensils or the fact that you have to actually hand wash your dishes and clothes, and your AC unit is simply the same breeze that blows a tall ships sail to the Island of Mackinaw. At Shaginapi your portals that keep you connected to social obligations and the daily grind are pretty much just used only when your forced to take a trip into town to stock your vintage fridge with dairy products (about 30 minutes away) Now I have to admit yes I would rather spend a few weeks with a little more tangible benefits. I mean lets be realistic, who doesn't enjoy a walking distant to the spa or a chilled tall drink with a fancy umbrella served by the "Beautiful People" But I also would like to believe that Nature is good for you, Right? I need not praise. It is beyond my capacity. Nature has got its own powers, strength, beauty and what not. The owners somehow kept this place unique. They keep it simplistic. They keep it pure.

They didn't take any rent off. They complained about trash bags on the deck, but there was no where else to put it and with 8 people staying in the house there was more than one bag of garbage. The worst was that we didn't know the resort was under new ownership, having booked the yr before. So, as always we brought our well trained standard poodle who was trained as a service dog. Karen said the dog had to go even though we explained that we've been bringing her for 15 yrs, didn't know the ownership had changed, was trained as a service dog, ( she said I had to show her registration, there isn't any) and since she's a poodle she is hyper allergic and doesn't shed.). So, my husband left and took her back home, leaving me without a car for a week and returned early the morning of our departure to take me back. Karen claimed that we tried to sneak a dog in against the rules. That was not the case and as I said, my husband took our dog home and stayed with her, spending his vacation, at home with a dog. Karen saw our car was gone but she still kept making excuses to come into the house to "catch us with the dog". Rude. And she yelled at my niece for sitting on the furniture in her " wet bathing suit". It wasn't wet, but who cares. She's renting the place out, she should expect that someone may sit on furniture in a wet bathing suit. She also claimed that we left the place a mess. We vacuumed, washed the floors, dusted, cleaned all the counters and appliances. Washed all the dishes. We scrubbed the bathrooms including the toilets. What we missed was a quarter size splash of spaghetti sauce on the bottom of one cabinet door. That was the mess. When we went out to eat at various places, when we told them where we were staying, the servers all asked, how we could stand Karen? They said she was awful and intrusive. She and her husband were always there on the property, lurking. We caught her on the deck, looking in the windows, so we had to keep the blinds down and closed. We had one of the kids sit on the deck, to warn us of her coming. And we were not doing anything, just staying there for a week, and she made the week miserable. Also, when we complained that there was no where to sit around the fire pit, because one family who rented a two person cabin had 20 people over daily, ( we counted) she said they were entitled to have their friends over. My 84 yr old mom, finally found a chair. She sat down and fell through it when it broke. Karen blamed my mom for breaking her chair. I feel that when a rental place claims to have a facilities, they should be available for all renters to use, nor just one and their 20 guests. Karen should have charged those 20 guests. My grandparents were both born to large families in Hubbard Lake. They are all buried in the local cemeteries. My mom who is now almost 90 spent all her summers at the lake, as did my aunts, uncles, cousins and my sisters and me. My grandparents had a cottage and we all stayed there until it was sold when they died. We share a rich history at Hubbard lake. There's Rayburn beach, my mom's maiden name dedicated to all the Rayburn's who are a part of Hubbards lake history. Btw, my grandparents lived at the end of Larson rd, named after her father, who built the stone bar, on land owned by my grandpa. I'm telling all of this so everyone will understand that Hubbard Lake is an important part of my heritage. Reconnecting every summer with my family at the lake was important to us. We would do this at the Sands. It was close to 4 corners and Larson rd and now Rayburn beach. Our old stomping ground. It was big enough for us to rent the big house and several cabins if needed. The former owners were welcoming and left us alone to enjoy ourselves. Karen and her husband destroyed all this when they bought the sands. We can't find a property big enough on the north shore, so we no longer go to Hubbard Lake in the summer, and I miss it. So does my mom,

Saddened to find out that after going to the Sands for 24 years myself (50 years+ for my family)…read morethey have given our week to other "family & friends". My family of 40+ people rent out the house and all the cabins every year in July. I do like what the new owners have down with the place cosmetically, but the way the run a business is like no other. They stayed on a camper in the middle of the resort the whole week. Walked the grounds and watched our family kind of creepily during our stay. I have never stayed at a hotel/resort/ air bnb/ rental where the owners stayed on site with you. They packed their coolers with friends on the porch of the house we were staying in and were in and out of the garage of the house all day. And did I mention since the last time we stayed their they added a hidden room in the master bedroom accessible from the garage? Idk... gives me weird vibes. The male owner got aggressive with several of my family members after drinking down the street with friends. We have never had a problem at this resort before and not only did they really dampen our stay this year.... but ruined a family tradition. Edit: to the owners reply... your husband reeked of alcohol and yelled in my aunt (woman's face). We were not disrespectful to you. My cousin inquired about available dates off a friends email and you gave her several options. You lied to my family which is fine, if you didn't want us back you should have just said. For everyone thinking about booking here: DONT DO IT, unless you are willing to pay for a vacation the owners will be joining you on.
