We had arrived lunchtime and immediately faced a problem as one of our two reservations hadn't been recorded but Brooke and Marco at reception got our room for the entire stay, and said our room was ready so doubly helpful. The booking mess took far too long a time to sort out but eventually it was. We were in the grip of a heatwave throughout our stay and while the main part of the hotel has air conditioning the rooms don't, so it wasn't a comfortable sleep on any night. But that's not any fault of the hotel - they did provide in - room fans which served only to circulate hot air and increase electricity bills. The room was fine, bed comfy, good quality toilet tissue, towels were great size and fluffy. We had in - room tea/coffee and the usual tv, hairdryer etc. For reasons unknown, room service missed refreshing our room on two separate days but we didn't mention it. Breakfast was great with the full English - and the bacon and sausage offerings were among the best I've seen in any UK/Irish hotel so fair play to them not serving rubbish - and my preferred continental choices included great meats but sadly not great croissants. The machine-dispensed coffees (most coffees are machine made even espresso) were darn good for what they were. The dining place was hectic busy at every breakfast with staff, machines (and management) not fully coping with demand but at the price we paid we couldn't reasonably complain as there's only a few grumbles to note and the guests were polite and tolerant folk. The water in the area is poor quality, adversely affecting the taste of tea & coffee and badly staining the cups. The local water authority needs a kick up the derrière - no doubt only profit matters there. I couldn't find a proper coffee espresso machine in the hotel that requires a barista so it was just the push button machines. There's a great market for sophisticated coffee guys. The breakfast pastries - all of them - and guests would benefit from a re start here. They aren't great and the croissants look good but are poor tasting. The general areas in the hotel are a tad worn, it's understandable but the hotel was very clean - the wear added to its charm. The spa was glorious. The steam room and jacuzzi were ace. All in all we would return in a heart beat. The hotel was busy, lively and we had a blast - we loved it. Despite staff working very hard they each had time to be pleasant and ever welcoming throughout our stay - now ya can't manufacture that.

Epitome of a well-run budget motel: cheap, clean, convenient…read more Following standard advice, we arrived one day early from the departure date of our trans-Atlantic cruise, and needed a cheap place to stay for one night, that was close to the port and where we were arriving to (either the Southampton train or bus station). This motel seemed to fit the bill. Pros: -- Large comfortable king-size bed. it pretty much took up the entire room, but provided the one critical thing. -- Cost - since I don't have loyalty points with Ibis, I was OK booking through the Citi travel portal. It gives back 10% on hotel purchase, with the converted total for one night being $63.23 USD. -- Clean - the room is configured to make housekeeping simpler (which translates into cleaner rooms since less opportunity to miss something). -- Eating space - there is a large indoor area where you can bring your own food (and where people eat a continental breakfast) -- Seems safe. Room doors face inside, windows are secured and not openable. -- There were quite a few people working the front desk. -- walkable to restaurants (Mcdonalds and TGIF), grocery. Reminders; -- no additional amenities: no closet or drawer space at all. No place to store or heat up food. Toilet is isolated (door), but sink and shower is not. Really does mean living out of a suitcase. -- walls are really thin, so neighbor dependent -- one UK style outlet so make sure you have a universal plug -- parking is via a public, share lot that charges -- has air heating and air cooling, controlled by thermostat. No A/C, though not sure when you would need it. Strangely, there was an electric space heater in our room. The room is a square room, where plumbing fixtures (toilet, sink, shower) were added post. I do think the room size is bigger than the cabin room that we will be staying in, but not by much.

Bedrooms are sympathetically restored, with an unobtrusive modern touch, in warm neutral tones. There's a flat-screen TV on the wall, comfy chairs to relax in, a good supply of quality wooden hangers (although only wall hooks, rather than a closed wardrobe) to hang your clothes on and a sleek, efficient kettle together with tea and coffee supplies to prepare hot drinks with. The bathroom is simple and white, comfortable enough (and very clean) with courtesy (ginseng-enriched) products. Rooms still use a traditional key system and have a name as well as a number. I was concerned that sounds from the (quite noisy) old-fashioned, gate-style, lift might be intrusive but happily that wasn't the case. Views from my window (at the back of the hotel) were of buildings and the car park with verdant hills in the distance. Reception staff were efficient, smiling, helpful, welcoming and obliging. As well as the rather grand staircase, there is an old-fashioned lift (the sort with a sliding gate). Staff were really friendly and helpful. This was eaten in The Place, a brasserie at lunch- and dinner-times; there is an adjoining bar with open fire.

There is a large reception and lounge which always appeared busy. One can only assume they are putting the bar to good use. Bravo. The got the plaza room which featured a lounge/business section behind the actual bedroom area. The room was quite lovely though lacked good lighting in this annex which made working at the desk slightly challenging. The breakfast is a complimentary buffet (the best kind of buffet) and the selection is comparable to average Marriott spreads. The gym is humble but has a few machines and weights which will fulfill the light-work-out-seeking gym-goer. Also there is a huge Sainsbury about a 6 minute walk away for your everyday needs/supplies. The whole place has a very laid back attitude, helpful when asked and hands-off otherwise. The price was extremely good and the only things I have to say which are even the least bit negative is that it is a bit in the middle of nowhere and it is a bit mazy as you may have to walk quite a bit around the perimeter if your room is the center back of the building.

She also helped us figure out how to get to the cruise port the following morning. When we returned from dinner she was still there and there was live music which was great. We had a few more beers and listened until she was finished. The next morning we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. Besides the usual continental fare you can order a meal off the regular menu. What a deal and it was so good! Again fabulous service from the staff. When we were ready to depart they called us a taxi. I highly recommend this for a stay in Southampton. The rooms are clean but the furniture is quite cheap and is damaged on the corners of the side tables etc well they were in the family room that we stayed in and other wear and tear issues.
