You have to pay $1.00 to hold on to the book for a week. I'm sorry but this is the LIBRARY. Aren't books supposed to be free to check out? If I'm late to return a book, I'm fine paying a late fee. But having to pay to check out a book? Pretty ridiculous in my opinion. It just seems like they're trying to nickel and dime you.

I finally made it the measly seven or so blocks over to the UCC this weekend for their Latino Arts…read more"Noche de Gala" fundraiser, and after a lovely evening of string music, salsa dancing, cupcakes, sangria, and community, I couldn't help but wonder why (oh why) I've never made the trek the seven or so measly blocks before. For shame, RF! UCC = United Community Center = "... a comprehensive social service agency serving the families of Milwaukee's south side. Programs range from education to elder programs, meeting the needs of three year olds to 93 year olds and everyone in between." So what that means, exactly? Bruce-Guadalupe community school, Latino Arts Inc., Cafe el Sol, Walker Square Neighborhood Development Initiative, elder/youth programs and so much more. While all of these community-centric programs and pursuits are not just worthwhile (they're also necessary!), it really warms my goofy, cynical little heart to know that there are arts programs for children and young adults alive and well right down the street. Latino Arts puts on a number of shows and exhibitions throughout the year... so if you're an MKE culture vulture, you should definitely consider checking out their schedule! Mixed feelings abound for this community center, partially supported by my donations. They have an…read moreambivalent attitude towards the neighborhood, they allow neighborhood community meetings here, but their parents association is somewhat hostile to the neighborhood as they don't feel that the neighborhood is part of their community (most of the students don't live around here). Some of the parents are downright dangerous when they are dropping off or picking up their children, and collectively they bring traffic to a standstill for a half mile radius twice a day for over an hour. They are parking bullies, since they don't have adequate parking facilities, they "reserve" public spaces in front of the school for administrators, workers, and guests they consider "VIPs" adding to parking and congestion problems in the neighborhood. They didn't help with our neighborhood speed bumps (they really don't seem to take much interest in the safety of area pedestrians), or the playground we built and they use. They have an award winning music program, but they don't invite the neighborhood, they seem to purposely snub the residents right around the school. I'm a little suspicious because every child in this school is cute, without exception. What happens to the homely children? What have they done with them? On the other hand, they do a great job with the elderly people under their care, the Cafe del Sol is wonderful both for food and entertainment, the gym and health club are very affordable and well used by the neighborhood. The small art gallery is usually interesting, with rotating displays. A small number of interesting handicrafts are sold here too.

As of my latest visit on 12/5/20, they are now doing curbside only. I reserve my books online, and drive over when I get the email saying they're ready. When you arrive, give them a call (the number is posted on their windows), let them know your name and library card number. They'll check out your books for you and put them on a cart outside. If it's rainy or bad weather, the cart will be inside the vestibule. Contactless and great! I really commend these librarians working hard, wearing masks all day, to provide such a bright spot to my life and to the community.

I've been a regular library user and usually have positive experiences, but I was very disappointed…read morewith how I was treated regarding a STEM kit. When I borrowed the kit, all the parts were there. One set of attached blocks included a slightly off-color red piece, but the kit worked fine and I assumed that's just how it came. I supervised my children while they played and returned everything intact. Later, the library called accusing me of replacing one of the blocks with my own and told me I had to pay $34.99 for a "missing" piece. This was upsetting, since I take good care of everything I borrow and even notify the library if I ever notice something is missing. Instead of being heard, I was made to feel like I was stealing. This experience makes me worry about checking out kits or specialty items in the future. I hope the library improves how it documents the condition of items before lending them, so patrons aren't unfairly charged for problems they didn't cause.

We rented the Little Red Store to host a party for our daughter's second birthday and highly…read morerecommend it! It's a unique, darling space in the heart of Tosa. There's also a huge, public parking lot on site which is free to use. I emailed the Little Red Store to see if the space was available for use during my desired date and I could not have been connected with a kinder person. The Little Red Store staff member or maybe it was a volunteer - was prompt, helpful and would run down answers to questions I had if they didn't know the answer off the top of their head. The reservation process was straightforward and we got confirmation very fast. Leading up to the event, the staff answered any questions I had via email quickly. We decided on the room set about one week before the event date and then I was connected directly with the volunteer who was going to open up the space for us day of. We arrived about 15 minutes before our scheduled rental time and were able to get into the space and start setting up then which was hugely helpful because we only rented the space for three hours (that included time for set up and clean up). A few rules we had to follow- no flames inside the store so we used battery operated candles for the cake. We couldn't tape or tack anything to the walls. We brought a portable clothes rack that we decorated and used as a backdrop. We also had to take all garbage with us after the event. I want to stress the fact that this space is small. They allow a capacity of about 27 people which is what we had attend. I would recommend this venue if you had 20 or less guests otherwise you'll be a bit crammed. And if you're having a lot of kids attend (we didn't) it might not be the best venue for you as it's a historical site. A quick note on included amenities - there's a bathroom inside. Tables and chairs are included in your rental. We also brought a little folding table for gifts. The kitchenette is a great, compact size. There is no stove/oven or coffee machine/maker. There is a fridge and a small counter space for any dish prep you might have to do. There' also a sink. Overall we're so happy with this space and how well it worked for our daughter's 2nd birthday. It was affordable. Our guests enjoyed the location and uniqueness of the venue, and everyone we worked with at the Little Red Store was pleasant and accommodating. So glad they allow the public to rent this space!

Helpful, friendly librarians, I've never been shushed here. Of course I'm pretty quiet when I'm reading. This is also a good location for a small meeting, they have a small meeting room near the front door. They have their own parking lot, but it's easy access by bus or bicycle.
