I called Gary on a Tuesday. He gave me a ballpark estimate on the phone and within a couple of hours he came to the job site. I added a couple of details, we agreed on a price, signed a contract and by Saturday he had demoed all the old concrete in my backyard, cut down and grinded two tree stumps and poured a 600 sq. ft. concrete slab. BEWARE!!! This firm has an unusually high number of negative references of which I was aware but ignored. Now I can only add to those who have had a bad experience dealing with them. The job to resurface our small driveway, was done promptly, however the asphalt material used was of an inferior grade and as of this writing has not cured leaving it looking very unsightly. There are uneven and gauged out areas and chunks of loose rock. And when a car tire is turned in the driveway it loosens more of the material and leaves tire marks. The driveway was quite smooth before the work was done. We are contacting another firm in the hope we can fix the mess that our driveway has become. Mr. Stanley, (manager/owner??) has not been responsive after promising to remedy the situation. After several communications I gave up and decided to write a review hopefully saving others from the experience of dealing with this fellow and firm. We had concrete done in our side yard to park our trailers on. We had a great experience. They were very responsive. The project was started and completed in a very timely manner. The owner is very hands on and would stop by to check on progress regularly. The employees were all very polite and after the concrete had a little time to set, they came back to make sure the entire work area was clean. read more

I give this company 5 stars. Gary, the owner is easy to work with. He is fast, well organized, his team is careful and respectful. He had to grade and asphalt a large area and he also did concrete work adjacent to the asphalting. In the midst of a pandemic and unpredictable weather I am awed at the results. I would hire his company again. The concrete picture is of a pour Gary did to correct an existing pad poured 20 years ago. Gary brought the existing pad up to code and even made it look stylish! He advised us on best approach, taking into account neighbors and rain runoff direction. It was a three day job. His team did a great job of preparation and then asphalting. We negotiated an agreed upon price and Jason told us he would call on Monday and probably do the job on Wednesday. There was no call on Monday. I called him the next day and he forgot to call me, and said that he was busy all week, but he promised to call Friday and set a firm date to do the job. NO CALL on Friday. I canceled the agreement. With that degree of poor customer service we can't have any faith he would show up at all or maybe get half way done with the job and disappear. read more

We needed a company to repair a defect in the sidewalk in front of our house. I had used these guys before for asphalt for the driveway and knew they did concrete repair. Contacted them during the Coronavirus issue and they were available to do the job. It was also great to put these guys to work during the down turn in business! They did a great job and were very clean with the job clean up and we had a great finished job! Second job and both I would say satisfied with outcome ! read more

Stay away from Gary. He said he was going to use 2 trucks and fix 2 areas on my driveway. He dropped his guys off and never came back. They did one truck of mediocre work and then took off. Never did the 2nd truck. I've called him 3 times and he hasn't called back. I'll be calling a lawyer next. read more

Wish we'd used somebody else. Gary did a subpar job replacing the asphalt on a small stretch of road in our Homeowners Association. It looked messy, with loose gravel everywhere, not just debris to be dealt with in the clean-up phase, but on the new surface itself. They partially clogged a downspout, left stains on the access road, and had to be prodded to come back for the slurry coat (which cost more money). Within 2 weeks of "completing" the job, the entire surface was covered with 8" circles of gravel coming up. Gary ignored two polite messages requesting that he remedy the situation. Yes, we have a new, low-quality surface for quite a bit of money. Also a lot of stains, loose gravel, and a strong recommendation for others to take your business elsewhere. read more

They didn't grade our blacktop properly which caused flooding from the small amount of rain we had last week, ruining our belongings, removed an area and didn't replace it, and broke a water pipe without fixing it either. Contacted Jim for an estimate for asphalt driveway removal and repaving! His pricing was fair and he went above and beyond keeping in contact and letting me know when there were any issues or delays. I was skeptical of the completion date but he held up his part and completed the job on time and with quality work. I am grateful for the honesty and follow through which isn't the case with a lot of construction projects these days. Fair price ( actually under competitive bids) so I was concerned there would be short cuts but he actually did more, removed flagstone for no extra charge that I was going to dump anyway. Gary and his crew were doing a driveway at one of our neighbors house, he came by my house and asked if we needed any concrete work. The job was small, yard and three quarters, we agreed on a price and he would do it while the crew was on the street. He picked up two other driveways the same week. At the end of the week they finished the three driveways but never showed at my house to do the job. I called him the next week and he returned the call the next day and said he couldn't do the job for the price we agreed on. He shouldn't have agreed on the price if he thought it was to low and to small. Don't understand if he had the crew, concrete, materials way he couldn't do the job for the agreed price. Hired Gary for repaving concrete for my driveway and patio. The price was ok compared to many overpriced Marin companies. He knowledge to concrete paving turned out to be very limited. He mostly relied on a guy he subcontracts for our concrete work. That guy was very easy to work with and did a pretty decent job (but with a few problems). Gary just acted like a snobbish businessman. Never answered phone calls unless when he wants the money and totally overcharged on the extra work we asked him to do. I can't believe how disrespectful the crew of workers was to us, while they were paving our neighbor's driveway. They "stored" dozens of tools (shovels, spades, picks, hoses, etc.), directly on our lavender plants, parked their machinery and vehicles so that they completely blocked our driveway (had there been a fire, we would have had NO way of getting out of our driveway!), and not a word to us about needing to use our front yard for storage, parking, etc. Very inconsiderate. read more

I just had a 1,100 square foot asphalt driveway in Mill Valley re-done by Gary Stanley of West Coast Construction and it was terrific. The driveway is on a steep slope with 7 sides and important water drainage requirements. The old driveway had major cracks due to tree roots, holes, places on the edges where it was disintegrating, and water running under the garage. Gary removed the old asphalt; removed or shaved the offending roots; completely re-graded/re-shaped the driveway to direct water away from the house, deck and yard and into the central drainage pipe; put down new bedrock; new asphalt and compacted everything. All this work was completed in just two days at a very reasonable price. As far as I'm concerned, Gary is a master at asphalt driveways; with great attention to detail and always keeping what's best for his customer top of mind. He's true to his word and can be trusted to stand behind his work. I would certainly work with him again. read more

Can't even list all the issues that went wrong but to note a few: job delays coupled with poor communications and un-returned phone calls, very limited knowledge of proper code and industry standards, physically altered the check payment I gave him, his contract and payment terms violate the CSLB Business & Professions Code 7159, dirty job site (cigarettes, soda cans, dirt, debris hanging on public sidewalks), never properly and safely secured job site which had a pool (huge liability issue for a homeowner), tried to pour with contract violations (2-2.5" clearance for concrete when contract called for 4"), no actual grade was done so that water would've actually drained away from our house, he ruining areas of our stucco siding, pool coping tiles, door threshold. We gave him one chance to fix a punch list of items and he did not do so, when we tried one last time to have him understand he became extremely irritated, angry, aggressive. Incredibly unprofessional. For your own good, please learn from our mistakes and do not ever contact this business. I don't think I have ever had such a poor experience with a service person. Disgrace to know that people are in this word screwing over people; this company is definitely in business to do this. read more

Actually would give West Coast Paving a minus - star rating. Hired to pave driveway for apartment building in Redwood City. This is the most UNPROFESSIONAL contractor I have ever dealt with! Received bid from Gary for one amount, then came back with an additional $1500 needed to complete job. Contractor was a NO SHOW twice. We recently hired Gary to refresh our old patio concrete and were disappointed with the lack of follow up once final payment was made. His crew worked quickly and generally did a nice job for this 1200 SQ FT refresh. Our disappointment comes from a failure to own, or even respond to, a couple correctable mistakes noticed within days of project completion. If you decide to hire Gary, be sure to get everything in writing and give yourself 30 days before paying final balance. I made the mistake of paying "in good faith" that we would be able to address any unexpected items within a reasonable time frame...like most contractors would do. This was not the case. We discovered issues with a gate post being misaligned, damage to brand new coping tiles and a crack in the new concrete. Essentially zero followup on any of these items. Very disappointing. To summarize, majority of the work was done quickly and pretty well. Caution is dealing with Gary's questionable business ethics. read more

If I could give Gary and Jim and their entire crew 10 stars, I would. To start, their bid was incredibly competitive. In fact, under others who had bid on redoing our asphalt driveway and adding a curb. But even more important, I can't imagine anyone being more finicky about details and attentive to every single part of the job. They knew what issues I had to be aware of...and had solutions (namely, drainage). To say we're pleased is an understatement. As everyone knows, when you find someone great, you use them. So in addition to our driveway, Gary and his superb crew replaced a sadly leaning garden retaining wall. Done on time and on budget. And now, they're building an incredibly cool horizontal slat fence. I cannot say enough good things about Gary, Jim, Joaquin, and their whole crew...professional, hard-working, and a real honest-to-goodness pleasure to deal with.
