I go to this store every few months when I need food for my Quaker parrot, and always find the staff to be friendly and helpful. However, two weeks ago I witnessed an incident that has disturbed me for this past two weeks. I came into the store by the back door, after having come from the bird hospital upstairs, and heard a commotion. A woman loudly berating the staff, demanding a refund for what appeared to be an opened bag of bird food. The store employee just stood and endured abuse, and when he explained that as the bag was opened, no refund would be made. she continued her abuse, making several personally insulting comments directed toward the employee, who asked her to "Please leave". She threatened to submit a bad review and tell everybody she knew not to shop there before she left. Then it was my turn to pay for the food that I was purchasing and the employee, who was apparently a little flustered at what had just happened and apologised that I had to see that, and that toys were 20% off. Of course, I bought two and left the store. During the drive home I thought about how difficult it must be to work in retail and have to endure abuse from people who needed to take their bad day out on some retail worker. I have been coming to this store for nearly a decade and have dealt with a number of different people there, all whom have been courteous and have shown themselves to be knowledgeable. I have always quite enjoyed my experiences in this store and have always appreciated their help. read more

I would give this place 3.5 Closed Mondays ... They charge for postage and shipping regardless of size of mail order... i can buy Neutraberries for my McCaw far cheaper in Kamloops $ 42 vs $ 58 for the same thing. They have a fairly large selection. A few unique things. I don't find them too friendly, but they will help you if you push them. Otherwise they are mostly too busy to help, but lots of time to eye you for shoplifting. In general I find the much younger staff more helpful there. If they were not under the excellent avian veterinarian, I doubt they would survive very long. read more

I placed an online order there. They tripled billed me placing my bank account in overdraft. Before I could do anything about it my landlord tried to withdraw my rent. This went NSF. Now I'm in overdraft with rent to pay. The store did reimburse me for the 2 extra charges but now I'm being hit with a $40 NSF charge from my landlord plus the $10 money order to pay the rent. So now I'm out $50 through no fault of my own. I believe the store should reimburse me that money. I sent the store a copy of the invoice I got from my landlord to prove I was out $50 as a result of their error. It was met with crickets. I'll never shop there again. read more

This older lady came out from the back to yell at me when I was trying to exchange some food cups that I had bought 60 seconds ago. Just politely restate your no returns policy and I'll be on my way...nope she had to screech at me about germs, practically foaming at the mouth. I feel bad for the younger clerk working there, she looked like she wanted to sink into the floor. This older lady, is she the owner? There are also the cutesy bird toys with mirrors that can alleviate your bird's loneliness, and woolen carrying cases whose darkness make your bird think its time to sleep while being transported. The shelves of bird paraphernalia stretch out in a labyrinth of items that will somehow become useful to someone with a small bird. I recently purchased a white large bird cage at West Coast Tropical Bird Studio. I was surprised to see so many cages displayed even though I spend a total of 2,5 hours in travel but have ======no regrets. It gave me an opportunity to better visualize as to what would be most suitable for our home. The lady who I presumed to be the owner was very forthright in her advise even to the extend of forfeiting a sale as she did not wish for me to make the wrong choice in her opinion. Eventually I did however, purchase the gage that appealed to me the most . I only regret that the cage I purchased even though it is a beautiful cage could not have been somewhat larger. This store caters to people with parrots in their lives. There is a really good variety of cages, traveling kits, dishes, food and toys, and the staff (family run) is a font of knowledge. Actually, a few times my shopping excursions have been extended by 20 or 30 minutes as the woman running the place gives me the low-down on my parrot-related questions. I think she really lives for this species, and from her stories it seems they have many rescued parrots they care for at their home. I always felt good about purchasing items here because the staff was stringent on getting only bird-safe items and fresh food... Believe it or not there are many bird-targeted products on the market that are actually toxic or dangerous to birds. You can find them at low budget or unscrupulous pet stores everywhere! For example: galvanized cages, toys that can wound or strangle a bird, cheap paint on chew toys or cages, dishes that leach toxins, and low-grade seed with no food value -- think the "budgie mix" you see in Zellers or Safeway ...yikes, I hope no budgies out there are really being fed that nonsense! If so, please go to the bird studio at once and pick up some decent pellets, millet and fresh seeds! (I bet your budgie would like a little fruit and salad too but I digress...) One last thing... I just looked over what Simon said in his review, and I wanted to clarify that the owners of this store are actually huge advocates of parrot welfare and well-being and don't encourage the classic "keep your bird in his cage FOREVAH!"mentality - -that is one reason why I always went out of my way to shop there. Unlike your typical pet store, they put parrots before profit and will help newbies or the uninformed make the best choices on keeping their feathered friend happy & healthy. I have bought a lot of items here for my birds. I even bought a large cage that had to be delivered. I was very disappointed that delivery and tax was an extra $50. The staff has always been friendly and helpful although I think one of the ladies is mentally handicapped but she was great with us. They have a good variety of items and I like that they are right next to a certified avian vet. I realized since moving to Vancouver that parrot items are a niche market and difficult to find. If you do find items, they are expensive. I have since found other methods of getting my parrot food but I do like to stop in here occasionally for certain items. On a few occasions they have told me things I know to be untrue but I just nod and keep shopping. For the most part though, the staff is very knowledgeable and I appreciate their dedication to parrot education and stewardship. I would prefer to shop at a place that at least knows about the different types of parrots than one that doesn't even know what the one they have in the window is called. On a side note, overly experienced parrot people will always try to tell you what is good and bad as most of them are very opinionated. While it is named Tropical Bird Studio, they carry items for smaller birds as well that aren't exotic. They have toys that are small enough for the tiniest of pet birds, so don't think that it won't fit your needs if you got little guys like the finch family. I have finches and though I have to frequent one of the big shops for my bird's single favourite chew snack (oat groats, the one bird is addicted to them), this place offers a great variety of knick knacks even for a tiny finch. Unlike every single other pet shop in Vancouver, they sell some fresh fridge-kept items for birds such as hand feeding formulas. And of course, more knowledgeable staff. Do wish they had a bit more stuff for finches, but I notice nearly all stores lack this as finches despite being the utmost apartment friendly bird I can imagine, aren't popular enough, and it is generally very tough to find what I need in one single place. At least here, I know I can get just about everything I'd find in town without travelling all over the place. Also, what with all the dog-only shops these days, it is quite a rare relief to find one specialising in birds. read more

Under new management in approximately last 3-4 years. The new owner is great to deal with, but that's where is ends. The staff that work at this store are not very helpful and give conflicting information and have sometimes been apologetically rude and argumentative. I now shop solely at Just For Birds in Langley. The lady that runs the shop is kind, accommodating and delightful to interact with. On top of that she has reasonable prices. All the things one should expect from a retail store. read more

Ask a parrot about this store, and he'll probably quote Humphrey Bogart from that famous bird movie, The Maltese Falcon. "It's the stuff dreams are made of." Indeed, there is not much that a parrot needs that cannot be found in this store. Toys? They got 'em by the truckload. Cages? A wide variety is available here. Food? They stock most brands of parrot food - plus a few speciality items not found elsewhere for your bird's dining pleasure (like organic walnuts much better than any you'll find in a grocery store). They even have gifts for humans...such as bird T-shirts and calendars, to name but a few. I've been a regular customer since moving to Vancouver in 2003. And while I do patronize other pet stores, this is still my main go-to location for bird toys. The main reason I still buy from other pet stores is location; West Coast is a long haul from where I live, 90-minutes, round trip. That, plus one of my main food purchases - Hagen Tropican pellets - is not sold there. My one African grey was weaned on them and will NOT eat any other type of pellet. (That should come as no surprise to anyone who lives with a CAG!) Some of their toys can be expensive - but they often have really good sales, and you can pick up plenty of good stuff during these times. So when it's time for a real toy-run for my boys (Nikki, Coco and Einstein), I head over to West Coast Tropical. Their variety of bird toys is unmatched at any other retail pet outlet in the Lower Mainland. Parrot lovers and keepers themselves, owners Eric and Vicki, can also provide plenty of advice to customers. The store is also right next door to Dr. Ann McDonald's Night Owl Bird Hospital, Vancouver's one avian-only veterinary clinic. Very handy. And last, but certainly not least, the store supports local avian rescue organizations. So if someone says, West Coast Tropical Birds is "for the birds" - they're right. Tremendous choice of safe toys and other pet accessories. Staff have been extraordinarily friendly, polite and professional. I buy my 20 lbs box of Nutri berries for my parrots from West Coast Tropical. Definitely a better deal than buying locally in smaller amounts. I have been pleased with my service as any hiccups have been corrected without a fight. I would recommend this store. read more

Westcoast Tropical Bird Studio is definitely a wonderland for many bird owners and lovers. I'm definitely not a bird food expert, but contrary to what D.C. posted, I have a feeling the food they sell are good quality. I used to buy seeds from other normal pet stores, and the seeds give off a funny smell. The seeds and pellets I got from Westcoast Tropical don't have that weird smell, and I was told to keep it in the fridge (just the seeds), so I have a feeling they're pretty fresh. The brands that they sell are usually quite reputable and are well loved by other avid bird owners. They have a good range of bird products and lots of toys. A lot of their toys are overpriced. I'm not sure if there are any other reasonably priced bird stores in Vancouver, but for what they're selling, I feel that it's still a bit too expensive... It doesn't stop me from going because I want to be careful with what I buy and make sure I'm giving my pet bird-safe toys... but that's only because I have no other alternative. I do agree with D.C. that the owners and staff at Westcoast Tropical Bird Studio are often rude and unpleasant. A few times, they gave me an impression that whatever I have at home is crap if it wasn't purchased from their store. And if I don't purchase what they recommended, they also suggest (either by what they say, or their expressions) that I'm being a bad bird owner. I'm surprised at the quality of customer service here, because usually I would expect specialty stores to be very passionate about the things they sell, and very keen on good customer service. I hope they eventually hire better, more pleasant sales people or change their attitude or else it will definitely affect their business. Overall, I would say - good products, bad customer service and high prices. But if you're someone who can afford the money and be safe with what you're giving your bird, I'd say this is the place to go to. I've only ever been to this store twice considering I have to travel over 6 hours to get there. Both times my boyfriend and I went there we had a terrible experience. The staff is horrible. I couldn't believe how rude they were. The first time we traveled there. As soon as we walked in this one lady started giving us the dirtiest look. She just stared at us. We said hello and her glare got even worse. We walked around and found some really good toys for some good prices. When we got to the front counter to pay the woman was still standing there glaring at us. We asked her if we could see one of the coasters under the glass and she just glared. So I guess that was a no to seeing the coasters. I then spotted a ceramic budgie near the front of the store. We walked up and checked it out and I decided I was going to buy it. We went back to the till and asked this lady if we could please get the budgie from the front display because I was going to purchase it. Once again she just glared at us. I asked again and still nothing. I know she could hear what I was saying. I was actually beginning to think she was mute or disabled in some way. I had to walk to the back of the store to find a man who could get it out of the display case for me. Which he did. As soon as the man stepped behind the counter that lady started talking to him. There was nothing wrong with her. I can't believe that ladies attitude. This whole time another lady was helping someone else in the store and she was telling them that they were stupid for choosing the bird they chose. Telling them that they need to get all this stuff or the bird will pluck and die. I am pretty sure she scared the owners out of not even wanting to keep the bird. Which is sad because they were smiling when they came in. Just not when they left. The second time we went there the experience was the same. Once again when we walked in we saw that lady. She gave us the dirtiest look of course but we still looked around. There is a section of items where you can make your own birds toys. I decided to look there when the rude lady stepped in front of me and bent down. For what reason I don't know. But she bent down so hard she slammed me against the wall with her but. I jumped squished my way out between her but and the wall and managed to get out. I then said excuse me over 5 times because I wanted to get through. No reply nothing. She was still bent down looking at something in a box. So I went and looked at other items. Then my boyfriend and I walked back that way and she was still bent over. My boyfriend said excuse me a few times as did I. Still no answer. She doesn't even act like we are there. So we both had to squeeze past her but and literally had to push her over a bit to get through. Still she stayed bent over with her but in our way. No movement nothing. I have never met anyone that rude in my life and that's hard to beat. When we went to pay we were asked if we wanted to pay 10 cents for a plastic bag. We said no because we use our own. Then the lady was like oh give them a bag anyways I charged them for it. Like she said that right in front of us. Obviously they dont care about the environment they are just jumping on the bandwagon. Overall they have some great items and some okay prices but the staff especially the one lady makes the experience so horrible we will never go there again. We will also never shop from their online store. Also please check the toys you get from there. THEY ARE NOT ALL SAFE. I saw toys made of toothbrushes. There are tiny pieces of metal when you pull the bristles out of a toothbrush. Not good for any kind of bird. read more

The owners of this store is so moody(rude). When you visit this store, you will find no smiling faces at all. Product knowledge is OK, but they always think they are the PHD of Parrots and Birds. I can tell you the truth about them, they just have a few parrots keeping experiences and they just pretend (maybe they really think they are expert) they know everything about the parrots. I suggest both owner and the cashier should go to visit a psychologist before running a store. Too bad, you have nowhere else to shop for your bird stuff in Vancouver. So,I still rank it 2 stars. This is a beautiful looking cage but the powder coating is chipping off already. This is potentially lethal to a bird as the chip can lodge inside and cause bleeding. When I brought the poor quality of the finish to the store owner's attention they did a little research and then I was told that the the best they can do for me is offer 10% off the sale price of a 'better quality cage'. Really?! I won't take another chance with them. They shouldn't even carry a brand that could potentially kill the creature that lives in it! read more

Like most family run shops, you get the double benefit of people to assist you who are very knowledgeable on their subject and sincerely interested in their customers, which makes shopping there an unusually pleasant experience. Retail is never an easy business, and I suspect that many of their "Bird Companion" clientele are not low maintenance customers: I've certainly questioned my own sanity for sharing a home with a pound and a half of shrieking feathers more than once. I've found their prices to be reasonable; and their advice can be invaluable, particularly on nutrition. I know my fluffy bundle of joy is screaming in happiness now -not to mention his feathers quit falling out- after switching him to a higher protein feed they recommended for the breed. And it wasn't some expensive "hand crafted by vegan monks" stuff either, they seem very sincere in steering you to the right product rather than the most expensive one. Despite some stuff clearly intended for those with more money then sense, overall the store is stocked with all the practical necessities you need, and none of the (often dangerous) junk that most of the chain stores carry. I dislike shopping -I have to check the fridge for cold beer before I can even open EBay, let alone go to a mall, so I'm probably not a low maintenance customer myself. But if you walk in to [insert Chain Store name here] and can track someone down to tell them your bird looks mangy and ask for nutrition advice, all they give you is a look like there's something wrong with you. I cut my own hair so I probably look a little mangy myself, but I'm sure everyone knows the frustrations of trying to get even a simple question answered in places like that. But unlike many specialty shops, the Tropical Bird people aren't snooty about their business, and I think most people appreciate down to earth, sincere people. For whatever reason, I never feel smarter after I've been to a boutique store where they tell me how smart I am for shopping there. For those of you with a perfectly reasonable phobia of specialty pet stores, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

This store is owner operated. Although she is very knowledgable about birds esp. parrots, she lacks the tact and social skills that effective retailers must have. This is unfortunate as she has a wealth of information to bestow, however most of us will recoil when spoken down to, judged as being ignorant or otherwise insulted. As an animal nutritionist myself, I speak with clients seven days a week about improving their pets health via species-appropriate diet, holistic and natural remedies. Many of my potential customers (who adore their pets!) are unaware that most of the well known (well advertised) commercial pet foods have terrible ingredients & preservatives. I would never, ever shame someone by saying, "You are killing your dog/cat/bird." However, these are the exact words the owner used during our initial conversation. My ego was still intact and I enjoyed the great selection of toys, food and accessories. The store was clean and well stocked, but the prices were definately on the high side...rent on Broadway must be too! I appreciate that they do not sell livestock anymore (they used to sell multiple species) and that they support rescues such as Greyhaven and World Parrot Rescue. I continue to use the Veterinary services of Dr Ann McDonald, whose practice is immediately close by...that will never change as she is a one in a million Avian Vet! As for WCTBS...I do not do any business there, as I have found Nicole of "Feathered Addictions" who cheerfully and expertly guides me through my parrot purchases. You can't beat her prices, her deliveries are reliable and always include a polite and informative (non-judgemental) conversation. read more

Best selection of bird products we ever saw anywhere. The staff are very helpful in helping with bird problems. They even gave us suggestions which worked to get our fussy bird onto better quality pellets. We had been trying for years and were very grateful for the tips. We see a big difference in our bird over the past months since she started on the Harrison,s( reported to be the best but not much use if the bird won't eat it. We also got info to help control our little excessive egg layer .She still lays but much less often. Some things are pricey, but lots of good sales every time we go in. To the comment below about playpens, we went shopping for a large playpen , and the most exspensive one we saw was $399 for the largest Java Tree, and those tend to sell for more in other places when you can find them. We saw excellent playpens starting at $8.99 for small birds and everything in between up to the big macaws. sometimes you have to wait in line at the cash since they are often very busy. Didn,t see any eveidence of poor service, just very busy staff! Good to have such a store for us parrot owners! right near a good Bird Vet too! Moxie read more

i agree with the bad customer service from this store. i read all the reviews before going and because this was a "specialty" bird store i wanted to see what i could get for my friend as a gift since she had recently bought a bird, i decided to check it out (even though i'm a dog person). the owner of the store is very knowledgeable, and yes, she puts all other pet stores down that sell bird toys/food as they are not up to her stores standard. It goes to show you what kind of a person she is if she can bad talk other stores. nonetheless, i did leave the store buying over $200 worth of supplies. the owners of this store probably know she has a monopoly over other stores since they are a "bird specialty" store. i give this store 4 stars for supplies, but 1 star for overall customer service. for those of you thinking of checking this store out, be prepared for and earful of talk about how the pet industry do not give enough attention to birds. read more
