My nephew started at this location when he was 9, he's 14 now and a Black Belt! I love the Newark location. KJN Scott Ross is a great role model and truly cares about his students. He motivates the students, makes them laugh and is an overall good guy. All the staff are caring and easy to talk to. I spend a lot of time watching their practice and it looks super fun! One day, I'll take advantage of the FREE offers for a month or two-month training....one day. My advice - have your child stick with the program. My sister kept her son in karate, even when he didn't really want to go, now he's a Black Belt and loves it! Keep pushing!

My son has been going here now for 1 year. He is 7 and is a "Little Dragon" this level are for kids 1 up to 7 or 8. He attends class 2 times a week. 30 min per class. Although, he is in the Black Belt Club and can attend more days, 5. This school accepts the book bucks promotion your child may get each year at school. Beware though, these classes could get real crowded! The parking here isnt great and inside the school is small as well. The students have a mat to train on and theres enough room. But for the parents you get to sit in a narrow walkway on wooden benches. During the summer and warm days, its get hot inside. Even though they open both doors from either side of the school, its still warm. There is 1 bench outside that is nice to sit on. Here is the home page for this location: http://www.erniereyes.com/html_documents/school/school_home.asp Over all its a great school, the instuctors work well with kids. It teaches them so many great things (besides taekwondo) but skills that will be good for them as adults.

Led by Master…read moreSteven Zhang (Zhang Shifu), children will learn basic skills for flexibility, balance, strength, agility, discipline, self-defense, and weapon proficiency. His experience in various forms of kung fu is unmatched and invaluable to the development of the next generation of kung fu practitioners. There are two tracks of development: traditional belt progression and competition/demo team. Most students will likely start in the traditional belt progression track which consists of learning and performing routines involving various weapons (e.g., fists, sword, staff, daggers, spear, whip chain). Upon gaining proficiency through training, each child will be asked to perform their routine and be assessed for a belt promotion. From one class a week or more, each student should be able to naturally progress (even better if they practice some at home). For the students whom are dedicated to the art and desire to further advance their technique and skills, they may be invited to join the competition/demo team. This subgroup will participate in additional classes to prepare for regional, national, and international competitions and events. In addition to weapon mastery and competition routines, the demo squad will expand on their acrobatics and stances. What distinguishes Zhang Kung Fu Institute from other schools is that a lot of the emphasis is placed on building up the fundamentals which support all forms and routines later on. This is especially important when your child is starting young. Zhang Shifu is routinely invited to judge some of the more well established competitions and has an eye for what will maximize a performance's score. Furthermore, the routines are made available through their website for current students to support at-home training. And most important for us busy parents is that the team is very good at communicating with parents on progress, updates, potential competition and performance opportunities, etc. They make it easy to support our kids' growth and development in the sport. Typical classes start with some warm ups and then the skill or routine of the day. Sprinkled in throughout the class will be fun games that help the students harness a skill or technique natively. For example, they may have sword fighting as an exercise to teach better weapon control and footwork, light sparring with gloves to promote evasive maneuvers and blocking, or line exercises to train agility and strength. In addition to Zhang Shifu, there will be a few student teachers (typically high school students who have trained for years under Zhang Shifu) who will help with the classes. The student-teacher ratio is pretty good - probably about 4-6 students per teacher. Also they have summer classes so if you're looking to give it a try or build a skill, these are great options. Inquire about trial classes too. Typically, they take kids about 4.5 years old and up. My child has been studying under Zhang Shifu for nearly 2 years now and has made leaps and bounds thanks to Zhang Shifu's attention to the fundamentals and encouragement to improve.

Every instructor is very professional, extremely friendly, and patient with the children. The classes are divided into different levels of professional training. The training not only focuses on Kungfu movements but also exercises the children's bodies and builds their confidence. In addition to the primary curriculum, the children also have many opportunities to participate in performances and competitions, providing them with more opportunities to showcase their talents. I am very grateful for the patient guidance of each instructor, and my children truly enjoy their kung fu classes. Student Feedback ( if I can make 10 stars): Suitable for ages four and above, enjoyable, professional movements, physical exercise, and making good friends. Teacher Evaluation (if I can make 10 stars): Professional guidance, patience, and friendliness with children. Parent Feedback (if I can make 10 stars): Excellent communication with the instructors, transparent and prompt responses to any questions. I highly recommend Zhang Kungfu Institute. The children will learn and enjoy themselves there.

Headed by Mike Prudencio, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy had its humble beginnings and has grown significantly through the years and within that span has been home to quite a few experienced BJJ practitioners. Mike and his team do a fine job in cultivating a strong community through respect for each other and the gym - the annual friend and family social events always have a good showing! Whether you've had some experience in the sport and are looking for a new gym with great people to train, a completely newcomer to anything related martial arts, or perhaps a parent looking for an extracurricular for your child, One World will open their arms to you with something to offer. Although One World was not our first introduction to Brazilian jiu jitsu while we researched for gyms, it ranked highest on our list due to the location, flexibility of the scheduling, training space, and coaching staff. Just a couple blocks away from the highway and being quite central in Newark, the gym is easily accessible. There's plenty of parking since most of the other establishments here aren't well frequented or mainly warehouses/non-customer facing offices. Adult classes are offered multiple times a day (early morning at around 630, mid morning at 11, and evening at 6) almost everyday of the week. The kids classes are also offered multiple days of the week (weekday evenings around 5 and Saturday mornings around 10). There may be different days/times for gi and no gi but they have a convenient online calendar that is kept up to date. Each session typically consists of warmups, drills, techniques, and open rounds of rolling. They also have two mat areas. The main mat area is huge and can accommodate large classes (sometimes the kids classes can get upwards of 30-40) with still ample amount of space for training and drilling. The secondary mat area is primarily used for no gi training when the main mat area is being used for instruction. And finally the coaching staff consists of some really experienced instructors in addition to Coach Mike. Their attention to detail and ability to motivate the athletes adds tremendous value to each visit. In addition, the instructors for the kids classes are so patient while firm to enable each kid to grow and advance at their own pace. For those looking to advance their game, Mike and his team of coaches will enable you to hone the fundamentals in addition to expanding your toolkit of techniques. The group of folks coming to this gym check their ego at the door and are all very willing to share and learn from each other. There are quite a few competitors who will certainly push your limits and help you get to the next level. If you're a newbie, welcome to the club! We all started one way or another but what's important is that you start and keep coming back. Time on the mat will level up your game and with some patience and dedication, you'll continue to build confidence, get fit, and develop practical skills for self defense and competitions. And as a parent, you'll feel right at home with fellow parents who have also sought out an activity for their children to participate in to gain intangible skills (confidence, self discipline, conflict resolution, social belonging, mentorship to name a few) while learning some practical techniques for self defense. They start children as young as 7 years of age but it may also depend on their maturity. I personally came in with no formal martial arts experience and have to say, it was one of the best decisions. As a father, finding a new hobby to enjoy on my own as well as with my children and redefining myself as the kiddos grow up has made this journey a very rewarding experience. The community has been great to foster that personal growth and it's been fun to bring the new generation into the sport. Overall, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy is by far one of the greatest places for an in-depth introduction and continued education of Brazilian jiu jitsu. If you're interested, consider coming in for a trial class and see for yourself if the gym and sport is right for you!

I had no background in CrossFit or weightlifting and felt completely new to it all, but they explained the basics clearly, kept things motivating, and often stepped in to correct form so we built the right foundation. That gave me confidence and made the classes something I looked forward to instead of dreaded. Over time, I enjoyed Boot Camp so much that I moved into CrossFit. I'm still a beginner in CrossFit and probably will be for a while but my weight loss has accelerated since making the switch, and I've started feeling stronger, healthier, and more positive overall. So far, I've had classes with seven different coaches plus Brad, the owner, and every one of them has been dedicated, approachable, and engaged. Each coach has their own style, which makes it fun you pick up something new in every session. Brad himself is humble and very committed to building the kind of community that makes people want to keep coming back. The best part of this gym is the great community of coaches n people. It's full of people who push themselves, encourage each other, and make the hard work enjoyable. If you're looking for a place that challenges you but also supports you, CrossFit One World is it.
