Our small Yorkie caught a couple of ticks during the weekend, and we managed to pull most of both off. A couple of days later, my wife and I thought our dog caught two more ticks, but the ticks would not come off. We called an emergency veterinary hospital, but the veterinarian technician (vet tech) did not think tick bites were an emergency and advised that we go to a regular veterinary clinic. We quickly found West End Animal Center and obtained a quick appointment. The office staff was extremely friendly. Two large boxers rested behind the counter and enjoyed their extra-large cushions. In the exam room, Dr. Frye quickly showed up instead of the usual vet tech. He explained those two spots were not ticks and advised that we should use the prescription Nexgard instead of our regular K9 Advantix II for tick control. Dr. Frye also advised that our dog can use a blood test after the tick bites. We thought the blood test was an excellent idea and approved it. However, our Yorkie did not think a blood test was an excellent idea. The visit was the first time we saw a blood draw. As Dr. Frye approached with his syringe and inserted it in our Yorkie's leg, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe with his mouth. Dr. Frye removed his syringe from our dog's mouth and tried again. The second time, again, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe, but the syringe fell to the floor. Thereupon, Dr. Frye suddenly grabbed, pushed, and held our dog's head to the exam table; leaned toward a drawer for another syringe; and obtained the blood sample. We did not think much of Dr. Frye's abrupt action, as he needed a blood sample. After we left the office, we discussed the visit and particularly Dr. Frye's method in obtaining the blood sample. We concluded that our dog is small, and we believe that Dr. Frye grabbing, pushing, and holding our small dog's head to a table was overly forceful. Distressed, shortly after we got the negative blood test results at home, we did not follow up with a scheduled teeth cleaning, which we postponed and finally canceled. Though the office staff is extremely friendly, we believe that Dr. Frye's abruptness and forcefulness toward our Yorkie during a blood draw was unprofessional and violent. If you have a medium or large dog, you will likely have no problems in this vet clinic as your dog can easily defend itself. However, if you have a small dog, please be careful here. read more

The team was extremely kind and everyone loved my dog. I got all of my concerns addressed as well as a few things that fell off my radar like vaccines. The one qualm I would have to note is that an itemized bill is not provided before treatment is performed and it is assumed that you can pay for any amount of bill. I was informed that in order to receive an itemized bill you must ask ahead of time, which was not explained to me before the appointment. So as long as you ask for the itemized bill so you know what you're getting into you shouldn't have to big of a problem. I will say I was a little shocked at the cost but also haven't had to take my dog to the vet in a while as he is not that big of a trouble maker so likely could have been my lack of exposure to the clinic experience lately. I'll try to summarize this to keep it short. I took my dog in for an examination and he barely looked at her. A couple of weeks later she began limping and I asked if he would have a quick look at it because I felt that the examination was not very thorough--case in point. So instead of being gracious about it he just said the examination was thorough enough and then had unmitigated nerve to say he cannot be of any further service to me--- what an effing nerve this guy has!!  Dr. Fye is a first class A-Hole IMO. My little Isis does not enjoy going "bye bye" but on Saturday she took a ride in her little pink kitty stroller down the street to West End Animal Center. She was surprisingly calm and everything went 100% smoother than I had imagined, and I believe it is because the staff and her new Vet were amazingly caring and kind. for a kitty that does not like to be picked up or "handled" she allowed the vet assistant to get her out of the stroller and even onto the scale. That says a lot, animals know when people are kind and caring. Dr Frye was extremely helpful with Isis' nutritional needs as well, making suggestions for my tubby girl to lose a few pounds (she's 17 lbs) I would definitely recommend this business to anyone who is looking for a veterinary clinic for their furbaby. ***my "foster fail" baby Thor loves his doctor. I was fostering a bottle baby and as soon as he hit 5 weeks I made a "well baby " appt with Dr Frye. At the time I was just fostering the bottle baby, then I paid for his well baby check up, then his first shots....then I named the baby, paid for the second, then the third set of shots...Yeah, by then I was never ever going to give the kitten back to the shelter besides, Thor would see his travel bag and jump right in, he knew he was going to his doctor. Dr. FRYE performed Thors neuter procedure and now Thors all good until his next shots are due. Any time a cat runs to jump into his travel bag (knowing the only place he goes in it is to see the vet....) you know that vet is Good! Most pets don't want to go to the vet. I love West End! Dr. Frye is absolutely amazing and best vet I've been to. It is clear how passionate he is about his job and animals. It's always hard taking my cats to the vet because they get anxious, but I know they are in good hands with Dr. Frye and his staff. Dr. Frye has saved my cats life on multiple occasions. As someone who is over dramatic and has major anxiety when my pets get sick or are acting weird in any way, Dr. Frye is always extremely patient with me and thoroughly explains what is happening. I found her unprofessionalism in the extreme when she: called me a terrible pet mom! Then she actually said " fuck you" to me on the phone. I never liked her and found the way the practice poorly run. Tjis perdon lacks empathy and class and I didn't trust her to relay information to the vet. He is the absolute sweetest and made my own one-eyed cat feel more secure about his missing eye, I'm certain. I am so happy I chose this vet when I moved to Kentfield. I thought this clinic was a good place to take my dog. The first visit was great with Dr. Frye. But all the time there after was not that good. Dr Frye's interest was not there, almost like he was being forced. I didn't like his attitude because he was more about his clinic and his advice for my dog was not always good for him. The doctor was pushing his Pet Insurance, so I purchased it which was a large enough amount. This included office visits, nail clippings etc. my benefit as a customer but his was money upfront. I started noticing that after that every visit my dog had I left with a bad feeling and so did he. On a visit, Dr Frye actually said "If you buy the insurance you can't afford the dog and you should not have him. I left hoping to never see him again. I have found more vets who have hidden bad attitudes and agendas. I don't care how many people say how good he is, I guarantee he is not the best if you LOVE your family pet!!!! He went in with a problem and the doctor gave him a shot, but It backfired on my dog and 1 week later he was dead. He didn't even consider how old he was or what his issues were that he knew of which he had all the records. I am so sorry now that I ever took my wonderful boy to him. Dr. Frye is straight up, friendly, knowledgeable, down to earth. I felt comfortable the moment I met him. At my first visit, he was really helpful with my sweet new rescue dog, Lily, who had developed a nasty worry spot on her tail overnight. I was a brand new client and I called to try to get in the same day and they were very responsive about fitting me in. So helpful. He got Lily all fixed up with meds and the Elizabethan collar, gave me some great advice about flea meds, asked me about our other pet and their needs - and was just a stand up vet. Another time, I was traveling with Lily and called in to request some meds to calm my dog (my other dog, who passed away, was a terrible traveler and I had to medicate her and it really worked). Dr. Frye called me and talked me through his concerns about medication for pets traveling and gave me some excellent alternative tips. He called in a prescription but he really wanted me to make sure I explored other options. I picked it up but I never had to use it! He was really caring. This level of personal attention is not the norm these days - and I really appreciate his genuine interest and concern for the animals in his care. One of the saddest things I have ever had to do in my adult life. But they were all so compassionate and caring, it made this life changing event so much easier. We had been looking for the right vet to bring our dog to for TPLO (ACL knee surgery) for quite a while and none of the other vets seemed to have any urgency, even though we were pleading for surgery quickly because our girl was in such pain. Dr. Frye and his wife Diane showed so much compassion and got it going right away. Yesterday we had the surgery and brought her home today. It couldn't have gone better and Dr. Frye himself spent the whole night with our girl. They brought her to us this morning and her tail was wagging. Dr. Frye is AWESOME! We aren't even from the area but were passing through and earlier this morning our dog started limping. Because we just happened to be in town and were concerned we were able to get an appointment within a few hours. He understood our situation and kept the exam and prognosis simple until we can take our dog to our regular vet. He was very gentle and understanding and told us what he suspected and the why's and why nots. Plenty of information we were able to take into consideration when we take our dog to our own vet. He then was prescribed us some pain medication in order to keep our dog comfy for the time being. Finally he asked to simply be given an update on what our vet finds out just to be in the know. My beloved 17-year-old dog died suddenly one week ago, so last night when my other dog started having a very pronounced head tilt and tic, I freaking TF out. I called West End this morning because of the great reviews and the decision that I needed to establish a relationship with a vet within 15 minutes of my house (I've been traveling long distances to their old vet in San Francisco, whom I adore). Dr. Frye was so kind and accomodating and fit me in in a pinch. I rushed over there and he took his time with us both and was just so kind and caring. West End offers a pretty incredible 'health program' where, for an annual fee ($400/year for the first pet and the price does down a little the more pets you enroll) you get two consults, exams, routine stuff, and significant discounts on food and medicines. I wish to God I'd found them a year ago - I wonder if I might still have my old girl if I had had a vet nearby to drop in and see - but I'm grateful I have him now. Highly recommended. Can't say enough good things about Dr. Frye. He's extremely competent, truly honest, and caring. It was suggested by another vet (Marin Pet Hospital - Barboni) that my cat possibly had cancer because he wasn't eating, had lost weight, and wasn't playful anymore. Ran blood tests which were fine. He suggested stomach xray which he said showed "a mass" and wasn't sure what it was. So he charged me extra for a radiologist to look at xray who supposedly said "the mass" was food. Then Barboni wanted to do ultra sound and biopsy organs. Got suspicious of him, so got all my cat's tests and went to see Dr. Frye who was highly recommended to me. I didn't tell him what Barboni had said. Dr. Frye went over all the tests and xray (which he said showed the stomach was empty) and said the cat was fine - all he needed was a different diet. Took his advice and my cat has put back the weight he lost, loves his new food, and is as playful as ever. Dr. Frye is the best and I highly recommend him and West End Animal Center. read more

Dr Frye has been the vet to three of our dogs. He has been knowledge about our giant breed dogs and down to earth with advice and medical decisions. He thinks of the necessary and the above and beyond medical steps that need to happen. He even gave us advice (at 9pm when the office was closed) when we were away on an extended trip with our dogs. His "bedside manner"with our dogs has been amazing. We have 120 lb teenager of a dog right now and he knows how to handle him in a firm but caring manner. I really can't say enough about Dr. Fred Frye. A pet owner's dream come true. Seriously. Not only is he a wonderful vet, he gives many "at home" solutions saving you a trip to the vet. Thorough and friendly in a great new building with plenty of parking, I can't recommend him higher. I just sent my brother there and he said the cost was about a third of what he had been paying.
