Easily one of the most stunning libraries in all of California. Here is what makes it so special: Atmosphere & Architecture: Tucked right into a redwood grove next to Old Mill Park, the mid-century design features huge floor-to-ceiling glass windows, warm exposed beams, and stone elements. Sitting in a comfortable armchair looking straight out into a forest of giant trees while you read is pure magic. The Outdoor Deck: The back deck overlooks the creek and redwoods. It's hands-down the best spot to work, study, or read outside on a clear day. Cozy Amenities: They have a real wood-burning fireplace in the main reading area, hand-crafted walnut furniture, and fine art pieces that make the entire space feel insanely serene and welcoming. Resources & Staff: The book and media collection is great, and because it's part of the MARINet system, hold pickups are super easy. The staff is always exceptionally friendly, helpful, and attentive. Whether you're looking for a peaceful workspace, bringing kids to the children's section, or just looking for a quiet afternoon escape from the city, this place is an absolute gem.

The book space itself is just average for Marin (I miss my fancy big public libraries in small town Connecticut!), but there is something really special here: The Shop. The Shop is an all-ages Maker Space with almost everything you can imagine to create: a row of sewing machines, knitting and crocheting materials, paint supplies, all sorts of arts and crafts materials, and a full wood shop! I have a sewing machine, but can't work it and hate sewing. It's much easier for me to bring any kind of mending project (I irrationally volunteered to mend some classroom chairs) to the Shop on a Wednesday or Saturday, when a sewing librarian is there. My younger daughter has loved experimenting with sewing here. And my older daughter loves tinkering with the glue gun, foam, fabric, and other supplies. Kids 8 and over can actually stay at the shop during open hours without parental supervision. When we have gone, I've always seen industrious, creative, responsible kids and pre-teens there hard at work. What a great space for young people who often don't have a set place in public spaces, where most events/ places are focused on adults or toddlers/ preschoolers.

My grandma was a staunch St. Helena Library supporter even before the current building...but more…read moreimportantly she was a woman of remarkable interest. Not just an interesting character. Grandma was truly engaged in life and interested in the things around her. A college graduate and one-time newspaper reporter, grandma read voraciously and never owned a television, she preferred to walk places so she could really experience them and made friends wherever she went because she was truly *interested* in what people had to say. Her house was lined wall-to-wall with books, books and more books...and yet the SHPL enticed her with stories and knowledge to be discovered. If you go to the SHPL you will find yourself in a well-lit space, surrounded on three sides by vineyards. And if you curl up near a window and become absorbed in a book, you will find that time passes quickly. When you leave, take a moment to ponder what you've read, and appreciate that your life is now just a little bit richer. Grandma was right, the SHPL is a wonderful library. In addition to a collection of books larger than one would expect for a town this size, you'll also find the SHPL has: - a large room dedicated to children's material - another smaller room of picture books for young kids - an extensive selection of VHS format videos (which Peter's Video no longer carries)...and DVDs too - free wi-fi for your laptop...and a number of PC terminals for easy yelping - the Napa Valley Wine Library collection - movie nights - an art gallery wall - friendly, helpful librarians A five-star library experience and a nice way to spend a SH afternoon. Open daily.

What a surprise, this small library is open on a Sunday. There are clear views of the vineyard just…read morebehind the library, a cat napping in a basket, an art wall and free Wi-Fi.
