I decided to take a drive one Sunday to find a new church and ended up at Christ Church of Orlando. From the second I got out of my car I knew something was different. Going in I saw people actually talking to each other and laughing together. People greeted me with warm smiles and I just got the feeling like this place was somewhere special. I remember clearly the message Pastor Paul gave that day. It was one that hit home for me and one that I was desperate to hear. That is not uncommon at Christ Church. Pastor Paul has a way of speaking to so many, but also speaking directly to you at the same time. His messages are relevant and applicable to every day life. He is funny, witty, and well spoken. Expect to laugh (imagine that at church!) and expect to leave a better person than you were when you came in. The people at Christ Church are genuine and sincere. It may seem cliche to say that it is like a family here...but it is. We're a bunch of imperfect people who love God and do life together. As a mom of a 4 year old, I can also speak to the quality of their children's program. My daughter learns about Jesus every week through fun games and activities and a quality curriculum. She loves coming to church and has made many great friends that now play together outside of church which has gained me some great new mom-friends as well! Speaking of making friends...there are different classes/studies offered on Wednesday evenings and connection groups that meet in various parts of Orlando on weeknights. Groups are based off of special interests like cooking, biking, young families, bible studies, women's groups, men's groups, etc., and provide a fun and safe environment to make some great friends while growing your relationship with God. Christ Church of Orlando also hosts community outreach opportunities where we are able serve the local community together as a church family. As we enter into our most Holy Week, I am going to do my best to let go of my own frustration at being judged and sent an email that both tried to shame me and accuse me of something I would never do, suggesting I wrote something I should be ashamed of. After re-reading my review - worried maybe I wrote something negative or too harsh..I recall it was just informative. I thought I wrote a review that would benefit someone looking for a church to know their catholic options. I sincerely was not looking to offend anyone.

I was invited by my daughter and son-in-law, and have to tell you, Rob Duford, the lead pastor, just blew me away on my very first visit. He is a wonderful speaker, with a contagious sense of humor, and is emphatic about teaching Bible truths; not giving us his opinion of what God's Word actually says. Aside from that, it is probably one of the most welcoming churches I've ever attended. From the moment I stepped through the front doors, I felt at home, and never felt that anywhere else. There was a comment left by another reviewer that seemed to focus on the gay issue and even stated they "felt" the congregation was bigoted. How very different my experience has been. Does the church embrace the gay lifestyle--no, because it is not Biblical. Yet, at the same time, they would not make an issue of being gay. I'm pretty sure there are at least a few gay people who attend and from my observation seem to fit right in with everyone else, and I've never heard anyone slander anyone else for being gay. Again, the issue is a Biblical one, and because part of the church's mission is to teach Biblical truths, they cannot endorse something that is contrary to the scriptures. Sorry, don't mean to be preachy here. The children's/teens ministry is amazing. Zach and Laura lead these groups and the kids adore them. All of my grandchildren, from teens to elementary, attend and love going. This year they brought back the annual Christmas Candy Cane hunt, and all the kids were in on it. It was a huge success reaching out to the community during the Christmas holiday season. Long story short, if you're looking for a church home....one where everyone knows your name and the pastor teaches Biblical truth, then Orlando North just might be the church you call home.

We have been a part of the church for more than a decade. I don't like to say "attend" because…read morebeing a part of a local church body is how we follow Jesus, whereas "attending" kind of implies that "going to church" is simply something an activity you add on to your daily life. You worship together with other believers, you serve each other and serve the community, you care for and get involved in one another's lives. That's what a "church" is supposed to be. Orlando North has been the place we've found to be able to do that. Orlando North itself follows the reformed theological tradition. It's not mainline Protestant but it's also not charismatic or pentecostal. Whenever people talk about a church, there's a temptation to start "grading" it on its various aspects. No matter what church you're involved with, you're not going to think everything is exactly the best in the world. But it doesn't have to be. What it does need to be is a place where you can serve Jesus and worship with other believers - a place that both equips you to do that and gives you the opportunity. The children's ministry are headed by Zach and Laura, who have a love for kids and an enthusiasm for teaching kids and young people about Jesus that is palpable. Orlando North has cycled through different "curriculums" - GUTS, Orange - but I believe what they've settled on in the last few years is a good one. But no matter what, the people are what make the difference, and Laura/Zach are great ones. I did want to touch on a couple of elements that someone else brought up ( I don't know them, and I have to acknowledge from the outside that people see what they see, so whatever they said was their interpretation of what they observed). I was bothered by the bigotry-LGBTQ comment because I've never observed that. There are a lot of "culture war" arguments that have seeped into the American Church writ large. Yet, even in the middle of a time where many churches in our country are fracturing and dividing because people can't agree about politics and these kinds of issues, one of the refreshing things about Orlando North is that the church body seems to make an effort not to divide over these things. Everyone has their own views and there's diversity of opinion in all things here. Politics and social issues are no exception - we have people who will be voting for Trump in Nov '24 and people who will be voting for Biden in Nov '24. And they know who the other is and it doesn't matter to them. You don't see the church dividing over it, because everyone realizes that no matter if you disagree with another Christian, what we agree on is most important and it overrides everything else - that Jesus is Lord and we are serving Him by serving the world. So, with the respect to what they believe they observed, I suspect that they were bothered by, as they put it "they believe in the one-man-one-woman theory" (since they mentioned that specifically). And yet, that "theory" been the historic orthodox Christian position on such issues for more than a millenium. Orlando North doesn't preach fire and brimstone about it. They hold it as a statement of faith along with other things. I suspect that someone who strongly disagreed about that would assume that a church that holds to the traditional orthodox view is "homophobic". And that's really too bad, because that's a view that really contradicts the actual nature of how the church body of Orlando North treats people no matter what their sexuality is or their views are on other things. I was also bothered by their comments on the 2017 beach retreat (which feels weird commenting about, seven years on), and about the role of the pastor's wife. I do know Melanie has filled many positions in the church, yet it's very common in churches for church staff to be paid to fill multiple roles. Somebody has to do that work. I don't know if they were bothered by her being paid to provide professional services, but for me, having been in churches my whole life, it's better for a church to pay someone than to require professional services for free. And 7 years on, Orlando North now has other people that fill that role. Specifically regarding the '17 Beach Retreat, again, I don't know why the person interpreted whatever they saw in that way. My wife and I have been to every beach retreat the church has done since before 2015, and I don't remember that retreat in the way they were describing, at all. Rob would never preach such a message, and I hope that with the passing on time, that person has been able to form different memories about the church than those things they cited. If not, then we failed them as a church body. So, to wrap all this up, Orlando North seems like a great place to worship Jesus and follow Him along with other people seeking to do the same thing.

Back in November 2023, I felt hopeless having exhausted my search for a church. I'd spent months researching websites, scrolling through social media pages, and emailing the leadership of dozens of churches... yet none of them seemed to align with what I was looking for. I was about to give up when I made the last-ditch effort to look at yelp (yes, this yelp). I was three page results deep when I found this lovely comment section. I don't normally look at reviews older than 2 years - let alone 7 or 9 - but for whatever reason I still went to the Metro Life Church webpage to learn more. The website so perfectly described what I was looking for, and despite the church being outside of my initial search radius, I decided to visit one Sunday. I was so pleasantly overwhelmed by how kind and intentional they are. I filled out a connect card with a prayer request of looking for a job. Within a day I had someone so incredibly kind reaching out wanting to get to know me, what jobs I was looking for, and how to pray. She introduced me to some wonderful people from the church in my industry, and they forwarded my resume to different people who were hiring. Within weeks, I finally got a job. The church was genuinely looking to help and encourage me, even as a guest. Fast forward to now -August 2024- I am a member of Metro Life Church. I am plugged into community and feeling fulfilled in my surroundings of such a strong body of believers... it has truly been such a blessing. If you are reading this and considering a church home in Central Florida, I highly encourage Metro! If a yelp review could help me find my home, I certainly hope this one can do the same for you. Some answers to my "Church Search FAQs": There's plenty of parking in the surrounding parking lots. Childcare is provided. There are nursing rooms and cry rooms in the sanctuary. The facility is well maintained and clean. The worship is not too loud or bright with lights, there is a true heart of worship and sensitivity to the Spirit. The sanctuary is not too cold or hot, although if you tend to get chilly easily and are sitting under a vent, you may want to bring a sweater. There is coffee and tea available, and sometimes snacks. Dress is whatever best suits you - I have worn a variety from nice dresses to jeans and a t-shirt. There currently is no "turn and greet your neighbor" segment in the service. There is a time of tithe and offering. When communion is offered, there is a gluten free version available. Community Groups extend throughout central Florida, from Winter Park to Sanford and in between. Metro Life Church is nondenominational, reformed charismatic. Two youths were baptized, and I was touched to see that it was they both had a parent baptize them. It made an awesome event even more personal. I also thought it was cool that kids join the adults for worship before being dismissed to their own program. I think that's a great way to make church a family thing. I look forward to coming back.
