I went to the original West Pines by the old Lutheran hospital, and it was great. This one was like a prison. No windows. Mostly inedible food. They won't let you wash your clothes. No one responds for hours when you say you need a painkiller. And then there is a tattooed nurse named Nicole who screamed at me when I interrupted her banter with another nurse to remind her that I needed my medication. read more

Not helpful. Very frustrating I felt helpless there a lot. When I'd say 'this exercise doesn't work for me, what do I do instead or how do I work around it', they took it as defiance and made me sign a paper that said I wouldn't resist treatment. They also told me to wait and that maybe another skill will help (they did not and I'd still try to ask questions that were met with ambivalent answers). It felt like an unsafe environment because of them. I felt unheard, misunderstood, judged, and very frustrated. Ok if you have no where else to go, but I'd recommend trying to find another place if possible ESPECIALLY if you have trauma of any sort. One lady was nice and I felt safe with her, I don't remember her name though. I still can't shake the ptsd/cptsd/double abuse they gave me. Horrible. I went for alcohol withdrawal treatment only. After they took absolutely everything away from me, I spent 2 hours in a windowless empty room looking at 4 walls. Told me I could not have socks WiFi toothbrush toothpaste. Well I hope you get the picture. After filling out many forms, they put me in clothes designed for prison and took me up to my ward. It was a windowless cell with a flat prison style bed. My roommate said that she had been there since November, hallucinating the whole time. Then, I said "enough ". I came here for a safe place to detox. Primarily it is a mental health hospital for pretty severe patients. People were self-stimming, talking to someone only they saw, arguing with nobody. I totally blame Kaiser as they suggested going there due to my alcohol withdrawal needs. They have no idea of what they're recommending. Professionals who talked with me said that they want to leave and that it was inappropriate for me to be there. I'm a 77 year old woman who just wants to withdraw safely and this has really set me back. read more

Liked it at first but then started to catch on the the staffs lies and them just telling you what you want to hear. 2 females checked my peepee which is off tops awkward as hell. Next before checking to see how long I lasted for detox in was too late and they kicked me out the last bad I was able to be there with absolutely No food No drink, and only by the grace of God did Oz help pick me up out of the street and take me to the light rail, how awesome was that , found drugs quicker than you can say this rehab sucks more than than any others I been too. My sister was here for a few days and it was the WORST place to have a family member. They have rust and black mold in their showers and the food is absolutely disgusting. Who serves cottage cheese with pineapple on top!? I know the staff doesn't eat the food they serve. And when I visited the worst of the worst happened and It did not give me any reassurance to help me feel comfortable with my sister being there. After I heard from her what about the gross food (seen it myself) and heard about black mold and rust being in the showers there was a patient sitting with us at the table eating dinner they seemed really drugged up along with everyone else (besides maybe 2 others and my sister) .. they were talking slow, walking slow and just seemed very not with it. After dinner she walked around the table behind me and was staring straight ahead after about half a minute of her standing there she fell hard on the floor and collapsed/fainted. The patients and I were getting the nurses attention tell them that the patient fell. The nurses showed no urgency what so ever and it frustrated me to my core. I then asked the nurse "are you going to hurry up or just be slow ?" The nurse got mad at me and snapped back saying "This happens often with them please don't speak on this" I told her my sister is in here and I would hope that they would come to the patients quicker because that makes me worry for my family that's here . She snapped back again and said " You don't know their condition so please stop" the nurse tried to take her vitals in front of us and the patient was non responsive the nurse asked my sister if the patient hit her head and my sister said yes she did really hard. The nurse waved to another nurse and they asked me to leave. The ambulance had to come get the patient and I'm not sure what happened from there but I do know that regardless of any conditions you should always take caution and move quickly to make sure they are ok and they did not do that. This made me feel very uneasy about my sister being there and I am so beyond grateful that she is now out of there. If I could give this place 0 stars I would . read more

After jumping through hoops for a month, including 19 phone calls in a day of which many they hung up on when finding out who was calling, They finally told me they would not take the patient because of his AGE!! Can anyone say age discrimination?? These people are very dishonest, conniving , and pick and choose who they say they can "help"; looks a little challenging, forget it!! They want easy money only!! They waste your time by giving you many things to do before they can take the patient and after you take weeks fulfilling their wishes they refuse the patient for something that is against the law...Age discrimination. WHEN GOING AMA IS WARRANTED. I just got finished reading the other reviews for this facility. This organization is not trauma informed. I suffer from alcoholism and severe trauma. The daily program is led by a man who apparently has several years of sobriety. Maybe shaming works for men, not so much for women. I encountered a man and we engaged in a discussion about military service. He said that he was not allowed into any of the branches of service, because he was "too violent." The next day, I made a comment in support of women survivors. He flexed. In all, because I am from Boulder, the liberal bastion of Colorado, I was met with antagonism. I also talked with a 60 year old woman, who received comments, like, "babe" and "honey." read more

Don't go here. My daughter went to West Pines for help for help with severe mental health issues and drug abuse in April this year. They detoxed her and discharged her to the streets because she was too depressed (mental health issue!) to go to group. So much for providing mental health treatment along with addiction. The outcome was the worst possible. This place should not allowed to treat people. read more

This place was such a waste of money. When I got worse bc of C-PTSD and grief they literally told me they didn't know what was wrong with me and treated me like an exotic animal. The counselors don't have enough education to (mis)diagnose people with anything other than bipolar or borderline. Don't go here. I was a TMS patient struggling with depression and panic disorder and she was the best Otherwise, as to the team at large, when I reached my very lowest, they gave me the boot with a shrug and a smile and left me in the darkest place available without any support system in place whatsoever. If I died tomorrow, I highly suspect they wouldn't care in the slightest. Be careful out there, folks. Loved the way i was treated. Nurses/Doctors/Counselors were all very supportive, friendly, and accommodating...even to the patients that were obnoxious and rude. I appreciated not bring treated like I was "less than" because of my issues! I highly recommend this facility!!' Thank You My only negative opinion would be about the kitchen manager Shane, and the lunch lady behind the service counter. Very rude and definitely not friendly. One helping, and if you saved anything for a snack a lil later in the "patient fridge." Overall, the nurses and doctors were great. I went in for detox from alcohol and it worked. However, there were patients with broken ribs and several whom were detoxing from heroin who had trouble functioning at all and it seemed like no one was paying attention to them. I have a very helpful nature. I kind of look at situations as "What would Jesus do?" Well, I went out of my way to help others and pretty much got bitched at every time. Shortly before I left, I turned in a food menu for a girl detoxing from heroin who wasn't doing well at all. There is an African American nurses assistant with one of the biggest mouths on earth by the name of Jimmy. As I turned in the menu, Jimmy decided to go off on me in a very loud and crude manner. He shouted "God dammit joe, she can do this shit for herself!" He continued to tell me how uncool I was and how I should mind my own fucking business. Once again all I did was hand him a menu. His outburst led me to relapse as soon as I left the facility. I know the relapse was me not being able to handle life on life's terms. I feel Jimmy was way out of line and shouldn't be working there or with people at all. read more

My firdt attempt to schedule an appointment for a medical detox was very professional, however there was a incident that was outside of my control which caused me to need to Reschedule and the gentleman who tried to R/S me was very sarcastic & actually kind of Rude. staff here is abusive and neglectful. they threatened to take our meals away multiple times when they were upset with us. when medically impaired patients needed assistants attending to serious medical problems, nurses refused to help and neglected them, saying they could do it themselves when it was extremely obvious they could not. when i helped the medically impaired patients, i was yelled at and reprimanded. also, there were only two 30 minute therapy groups a day, so the other 11 hours you were forced to sit at a long table in the day room and stare at walls. you were discouraged to talk to other patients, and when you do talk to the other patients and make friends, nurses will threaten to hold you here longer as punishment. when i sent in a written complaint, West Pines said my situation didn't violate any rules or anything they have as a company. so, this company encourages staff to abuse and neglect patients. avoid this center if you want to feel better. this center is truly traumatizing. read more

If I could leave 0 stars for my experience, I would. The staff was less that par, horrible, less than bogie actually! I cannot stress this enough! A waste of time and money that ended up causing more damage than good. I went to West Pines for treatment several years ago, it was the biggest mistake of my life and am just now, after all these years, am able to talk about my experience. The doctors were so mean, they blamed every participant for their disease in a very harsh and degrading manner. Do they not have enough medical training to realize addiction is a disease and deserves to be treated with compassion and sensitivity? Does West Pines require their doctors to do continuing education? Furthermore, my whole family showed up the day of family counseling and visitation. The families and participants sat in a circle listening to a couple of the doctors and counselors talk crap about participants and how horrible we were; basically making all the participants feel less than human. My brother, sister in law and cousin who are all doctors were present and left disgusted by the behavior of the West Pines doctors and psychiatrists. They were pissed! How can doctors be so insensitive and degrading to persons suffering from a disease. Needless to say, West Pines treatment sucked for lack of a better word. I hope everyone reads this and takes it seriously in their decision making before checking in to any facility. I wonder how many other participants have been negatively effected by their experiences at West Pines? Now, in retrospect, I do encourage all to do their own research as I know things can change and people and treatment centers can get better with time. I have recently reached out to West Pines and feel slightly better. I spoke with Brad who is in charge of the facility and he really took the time to listen to my concerns about my experience at West Pines. He was extremely attentive to my concerns and assured me that the staff I had those experiences with are no longer working at the facility. Given his sensitive and attentive response to my concerns I am hopeful this was a isolated incident and doesn't happen anymore. read more

We took my wife to West Pines for detox after they were the only place that said they would take her since she is in a wheelchair. After less than 24 hours they said she didn't need to be there so come pick her up. The detox was supposed to last 3-5 days. They decided she was too much work. Sent her home to continue on the path to destruction! Stay away from this place. read more

The best staff in Denver. They are all very caring and compassionate. They never make the patient feel like an inconvenience. Very caring at a time when people are at low points in their life. I was hospitalized at West Pines for psychiatric care for 2-3 weeks and was incredibly impressed with the doctors and staff, as well as the building and grounds of the hospital. Their individual and group therapy sessions, including art therapy, are far superior to any other psychiatric unit in the state (I have been to the majority of these facilities). If I ever need any additional in-patient or out-patient psychiatric hospitalization, I will return to West Pines. read more

Our experiences with West Pines in the past several months are a microcosm of all that is wrong with the mental health system. And the worst part: They sure don't seem to care. I submitted a discharge appeal through my son's insurance provider, and notified both his case manager and the facility immediately after I had filed the appeal. I had done so because I didn't believe that keeping him for just 2 days was sufficient for his treatment needs. West Pines' web site says that their program "provides compassionate psychiatric treatment for patients with mental health concerns." That statement couldn't be further from our family's last two experiences with West Pines. According the the insurance provider, the patient would remain hospitalized pending the outcome of the discharge appeal. I was told by the insurer to wait for notification. Just a couple hours after submitting the appeal, however, my son showed up knocking at the door. (I guess their idea of compassion is giving a homeless mentally ill person a bus token to wherever, I have witnessed that happening .....) West Pines went ahead and discharged him without bothering to contact me. This mind you, after I had left the case manager a message asking her to call me and notifying her and the facility staff of the appeal......so what, not their problem, moving on --- that's the level of support we can expect. "Our goal is to discharge the patient as soon as we possibly can. We are acute care only." That is what I was told. Advice to families: Be sure to know your rights and talk to advocacy groups and as many providers outside of the system that you can, because organizations like this won't tell you anything, their only objective is to get the patient (who doesn't have private insurance) OUT THE DOOR!!!!! read more

I have had good treatment here. Most of the nurses and other staff really care about the patients. The doctors are smart and compassionate. Of course as with anywhere there are a few staff here or there maybe not having the best day, but I've been here a while and had really good luck with the psychiatric inpatient units. You don't see a therapist in the psych units (individually) but you usually do see your doc on week days as well as a social worker who can help with aftercare or housing placements, finding a therapist, etc. They do have a couple groups throughout the day that I've found to be helpful, and they are optional but sometimes they require group attendance in order to access certain privileges. I've also had a good experience with their outpatient IOP (DBT) program, as well as partial hospitalization day program. I can't speak to the detox program but since we all use the same dining hall those folks seem to be doing well and enjoying their program...they really make you deal with what caused you to be addicted in the first place, according to a couple people I talked with.
