    Ask the Community - Westca

Is this gym friendly to people in larger bodies? I'm considering joining based off reviews but present as a woman in a fat body... boutique gyms scare me because some aren't as accepting of fat people (which is ironic). Thanks!

The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming.

Are there any group fitness classes or just personal training?

We have semi private training classes. This is 3-5 people in a group with a trainer. Each client is still getting a workout programmed for their fitness goals, level and personal workout schedule. So unlike most group fitness classes you won’t…

Is this gym usually packed or busy most of the time? When is it usually slow? I'm looking for a gym that isn't too packed like 24 which I'm at now (:

The gym is busiest at before and after traditional working hours 6-730am and 5-630 pm. However, we aren’t even as closed as packed as the big box gyms get.…

What is the membership cost and are there any discounts available if taken yearly or 6 months membership to gym? Would like to know about personal training costs for weight and fat loss as well.

Hi! Thanks for your question! We do offer discounts for annual commitments and one year paid in…

What is parking like around here- particularly weekend mornings?

Parking is available in the garage directly across the street form the gym, and there are spaces available all the time. WESTCA validates all members parking for 2 hours FREE in that garage . Street parking is also available by meter and free before…

Apart from it being a very clean gym and having friendly staff (both of which I totally agree with) what is the attraction to this gym? Note: Personally I found it to have…

We are a community based gym, our members are friendly towards one another. We promote a culture of sharing equipment ("working in"). We also throw several member events throughout the year (fashion shows, friends giving parties, fitness seminars…

Does Westca have air runners and assault bikes?

Hi, we do not have those specific treadmills or bikes- but we do have standard life fitness treadmills and spin/cycle bikes. We offer a 7 day FREE trial to all local residents so I’d encourage you to come in a try it out .…

How old must a person be to STAY there?

Hi , You must be over 18 to workout. If you are under 18 you need permission from a parent or guardian.

Does Westca have any showers for after workout clean-up?

Yes they do! Just one in the MEN'S AND WOMEN'S bathroom.

My wife went to a gym in Brazil where she paid a higher monthly fee and they had a lot of trainers helping people. Is WESTCA similar or you still have to pay the trainers separately? Thanks!

The monthly fee for WESTCA, which is $40, does not cover personal training. WESTCA produced an app that you can download (free, or with membership, you'd have to ask them) that shows correct lifting form & technique. I believe it was recorded…

Looking for a new gym around the area. Was just wondering if working with a personal trainer would cost an additional on top of the monthly membership fee?

Yes, cost would depend on which trainer, type of training, and frequency.

Is this a good gym for people trying to change their lifestyle (i.e. lose weight + condition) or more for people that already live the fitness lifestyle?

Both for sure! I was super out of shape, gained a lot of weight, and unhappy with myself, physically and emotionally. I started training with Jordan May 1 2017 and I'm now down 45 pounds. I'm healthier, slimmer, stronger and happier. I reached my…

Anyway, there are three key things for me when it comes to a gym. First is cleanliness, second is shower facilities, third is equipment. AVAC is a relatively small gym and I tend to go at off hours. This means not many people, so thankfully it's very clean inside. If you think about a 24 Hour Fitness or similar, they have hundreds of people constantly working out, there's no way to uphold hygiene standards. AVAC, despite being small, has frequent cleanings happening, which is nice. The showers at AVAC are... okay. On the plus side, they provide towels, which is a dealbreaker for me. Who wants to bring their own towel to a gym? So that's a big convenience factor. The towels have been bleached and washed to the point they are marginally more absorbent than copy paper and quite rough, but I guess a towel is a towel. The showers themselves are workable but not ideal. Communal in nature, which I personally find awkward, but going at off hours at least allows me to have them to myself or only 1-2 others at most. If it was packed I'd probably wait, it's just too weird. The shampoo and body wash are not very high quality, kind of reminds me of what you'd get at a cheap motel. But again, at least it's there. I also don't want to cart my own soap around. For the gym's size, the equipment variety and quantity is good. I've never not been able to get a treadmill, I've always been able to get the free weights I want, and there are usually benches available. The only thing in short supplies are squat racks, of which there are two, and space for deadlifts, which is basically also two. I would say the gym's clientele leans towards... not people doing those types of exercise. So I haven't typically had to wait, but again I also don't go at peak hours. There are also tons of machines, if you're the type of person who thinks isolation exercises are good. Better than nothing I suppose, but that's just me. AVAC offers a lot of free classes, of which I've taken none. They also have a snack bar, which I've never used. There's also a pool (not the swim school pool which is like 2.5' high) and a kiddie pool outside, neither of which I've been in. And there are tennis courts and pickleball and some outdoor fitness area, which, you guessed it, I have never been to. I wouldn't say AVAC is a destination gym the way Bay Clubs are, but if you're closeby it's probably the best one around. They also have plenty of parking in back in two lots.

AVAC's staff is always service with a smile. The young woman at the front desk with short hair and…read morea nose ring is always so friendly and welcoming and always remembers my name. I wish this place is 24/7 but they open at 6AM on the weekend and it's never packed to the point where you have to wait, so it's a win-win. Service is impeccable. I love their protein smoothie bar. I have tried their recovery zone and can say I had a relaxing time getting my back and legs massaged while I read my book. It was dim and quiet, but I was by myself. Someone did go into the room to use the massage gun for a few then left. As part of my 2026 goal, I am trying to claw my way back to my old self. I will prioritize my health this year, so I will stop by the recovery room often to unwind in the quiet. One thing I noticed is that you are not supposed to film here but I still see people setting up their tripod and/or flat out filming themselves and their clients which is somewhat annoying, but other than that I have had no complaints here.

The actual facility here is great and the staff is fair- it does seem that a lot of them spend…read moretheir time on their phones and are not super attentive. My main issue with this facility is a specific group of members that have started to come in. There is a large group of people who come in to work with a husband/wife team of independent trainers. The trainers are rude and take up tons of equipment that they do not actively use- like they are trying to reserve it for their future use. When you ask them if you can work in or if they are using something they are rude and look at you like you are insane for even talking to them. This group of people act like they are the only people in the gym and completely lack awareness and any etiquette. They leave weights on machines, don't wipe anything down, and leave huge messes in the restrooms. My other issue is the amount of recording that they do- the gym has now banned the use of free standing tripods (great) but now they are using other pieces of equipment to prop their phones up on and record their workouts. On top of that- there is no regard or awareness for someone in the back of their video. I know that I have been in the back of their recordings, which I do not want to be, and have asked them multiple times to move their phones or not record and they are just rude about it and start talking crap. I have taken these issues to the front desk staff and management. No one does anything about it. I brought it up to the girl at the front desk this past weekend and she basically told me that because they are bringing in so much business they can do what they want. If that is the case then this business clearly does not value all of its members equally.

This review is about the GYM overall. 1. The operating hours…read moreare very limited. 10pm is way too early to close for someone, especially those who work 2nd shift. 2. Workout machines and equipment are offset. Treadmills are way too many. A few more workout machines would be nice. 3. Everybody pays the same price, on the same day, but not everybody comes to spend a whole day to use all the features. 4. IMO to compare with Citisport about cleanliness: CTS 9/10 - VLS 10/10, equipment: CTS 10/10 - VLS 8/10. Price 5x time difference. Imagine paying $175/month ($6/day) seem not too much for an individual to breakdown and think about, slowly more people will sign up mainly for working out purposes than other relaxing activities, the GYM sooner or later will be busy. I've visited Villasport and Citisport in both the same hours during different times of the day, and the crowds are not much different. But for the price it is. Paying $175 monthly and must wait for machines to break the workout momentum is pretty sad and upsetting, innit? Then 10pm its already closed... weekends are 2pm... Overall I'd personally think $75/month is fair. For $175/month, hours should be extended, and equipment should be more balanced. The way I see this fitness is built was to target older wealthy people 45+ years old. However, as I come here I see more of the younger ones than the older ones.

However, I am not a big fan of some of the gym machines as some aren't very comfortable to use. For example, the excess amount of Hoist machines could possibly be replaced by other machines from other companies. In other gyms I have visited, the other machines from companies like Life Fitness have been a favorite for me and at times I see myself going to these gyms to get a workout that is more appealing for me. Another thing I have noticed is that some of the cardio machines almost never see use and could possibly be replaced by other machines. This is an amazing gym overall but it could definitely see some improvement. From other people I have spoken to they all noticed the big price increases on memberships and guest passes, and I think it would be fitting to see some equipment upgrades to go along with the increased prices.
