He would belittle the events in my life that…read morewere at the root of my chronic depression, saying lost relationships were insignificant because I was young or because I just lost one person, and insisting that it was abnormal to withdraw from life after a childhood cancer diagnosis when "most people" would feel motivated to make the most of their lives. He was much quicker to tell me what I should feel rather than listen to what I was feeling, and I left after he evaluated me for autism as an explanation for my antisocial behavior. Several times he told me how his approach to counseling is more direct and involves pushing patients more than other therapists. This was a red flag that should have told me he has too much to prove to actually slow down and listen to his patients. I have no doubt he genuinely thought he was helping, but keeping my appointments felt more like going to the dentist than talking to someone who can help me through traumatic events.
