The pastoral team? Incredible. Thomas is an amazing speaker and motivator. He's just a hoot and will make you both laugh and cry from the pulpit. Jill brings deep warmth and clarity. She is honestly the reason I joined the church. She helped me through a tough patch 11 or so years ago and I just adore her. Ben's passion and humor is contagious. And then there's Allen Hilton, who leads our "Courageous Conversations"--deep dives into the hard stuff that most churches avoid. I lovingly call him our resident pot-stirrer (and I mean that with the highest respect). He challenges us to think, listen, and grow. Covenant is a place where questions are welcomed, differences are embraced, and faith is lived out with joy and intention. Our youth program is phenomenal...the kind of place where kids are known, valued, and genuinely excited to show up. We have three Sunday services, and the church is alive all week long with vibrant small groups for every age and stage. Seriously, if you're breathing, there's a group for you. What's especially beautiful is how diverse we are in age and background. Many of our members didn't grow up Presbyterian, but felt deeply called to be part of what's happening here, both in Austin and globally. Our missions and outreach director, Whitney seriously ROCKS. She's always coming up with amazing ways we can better serve. This isn't about checking boxes. It's about belonging, growing, and serving together. Covenant is a church that meets people where they are and walks with them toward something greater. The first few times I went to traditional services there, I confess that's what I thought. I liked the teaching, and people seemed friendly enough, though, so I stuck around long enough to really check it out. Here are some things that surprised me: 1) A contemporary service, ten45, meets in the modern building straight ahead, at guess what time? This service is worshipful and uplifting, with a relaxed and sincere vibe, modern style worship (rock band, video shorts, lyrics on screens, worship leader), and a fun kids' mini-lesson before the sermon. The senior pastor preaches the same sermon there as the traditional services, hopping around between them. He has a great sense of humor, while not straying from intelligent teaching. People tend to dress more casually at this service. It's my favorite. 2) The youth groups have a lot of kids and do a lot of stuff. If you have kids, they will probably like it. There's even an indoor gym. 3) The church is really involved in missions, in Austin and internationally. I don't just mean that they donate money. The members actually go places like downtown Austin to work with homeless kids, and churches and communities in Cuba and Africa. Church members have actually sponsored an entire community in Senegal through World Vision. 4) There are a lot of classes and groups that are open to anyone who wants to come, and people are nicer and more open than they seem at first, while wearing their Sunday best. 5) This church is huge. If you're a Christian and going to UT Austin as a college/grad student and looking for a church, then I think some distinct things that come to my mind about Gracepoint Austin is that it has solid Bible-based teaching, has pastors/staff & mentors who are caring and can help you grow in your faith and share the gospel with others, & provides a lot of opportunities to be able to form close friendships with other Christian college students. The college staff are warm and welcoming and also take a lot of time to make events happen, cook food, plan outings, prepare sermons and discipleship classes, etc. so you get a sense that people are genuinely caring in giving their time for college students. Definitely for me, i am so glad that I attended in my college years, having a lot of fun memories with people in the church, and seeing a lot of growth in my relationship with God. If you aren't Christian, then I think this church is great place for you, too, since it's a place where you can learn about the Bible, find out more about Christianity, feel safe to ask questions (you can even feel free to disagree) & feel welcomed overall. The Episcopal Church is where women and gays can be priests, so right off the bat that's going to entice you or turn you off. The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection (ECR) is a lovely little church in North Austin with a very smart, compassionate reverend, and when he's on vacation, you might be able to attend a service led by a woman or hear a great sermon by the female seminarian! Let me also explain that the Episcopal church is a liturgical church. That means it has a traditional service that is similar to the Catholic service. Each week you will receive Holy Communion. There's a set structure to the services. Music is mostly traditional. The choir is decent but not professional or slick. If you are looking for a contemporary service and a "rock band" atmosphere with a professional band, you won't find it here (yet...there has been some talk about offering a contemporary service in the future). However, there's something to be said about the peaceful, contemplative quality of the more traditional service. Even if the old-style services aren't your bag, you might want to try the many free classes and events happening at ECR. You can also receive "unction," free hands-on healing (anointing of oil) with the Holy Spirit, after each service. The people at ECR are extremely friendly, nice people. I will say that the crowd tends to be a little older, but don't let that put you off if you are younger. Some of these older folk are not only nice but pretty darn funny, cool people. Because ECR is a little church that needs to grow, there's a lot of room for you to get involved, start your own thing, and create something new here. This is a place to plant your garden. The people here are very open to that and will be excited to have your fresh energy and ideas. Would you be interested in starting a program for the homeless? Getting some groups together for a book club or Christian meditation? Creating a ministry for gays and lesbians in the church? This is a place where you can help create something new and great. So stop on by!

My wife and I attended St. David's downtown for several years and have great affection for that…read morechurch and all the good work it does. However, when its director of youth ministries, Fr. Billy Tweedie, left St. David's to become the new vicar at ECR, we decided to give our neighborhood church a chance. We have been overwhelmed by the kindness from the community. The people of ECR are warm, humble, and extremely welcoming. The congregation is slightly older, but still vibrant and relatable. And we've noticed younger families like ourselves dropping in. Fr. Billy lives in the neighborhood and has done a fantastic job of integrating into ERC. He is funny, down to earth, gracious and realistic about the work required to build the church. He's also great with kids. Each Sunday, he invites the children to the front of the church and gives a short children's sermon in terms that are insightful and understandable to the kiddos without being didactic or patronizing. Other reviewers have already stated more eloquently the value of the Episcopal church in general. I can only reiterate that there is room for discussion, dissent, and thoughtful debate. While the service is fairly structured, the teachings themselves are not based on a strict dogma or rigid viewpoint. My wife was raised Roman Catholic and has found that the Episcopal church strikes a nice balance between the traditions she grew up with and the progressive views that she holds close today. We feel very fortunate to have found ECR and perhaps we'll see you there some day soon.
