I first visited What a Bagel shortly after it opened last fall, and was disappointed. Each of the bagels I tried were gummy and tasted underbaked - they also had little flavor. There were many varieties, but they largely seemed to be plain bagels with some toppings. I resumed patronizing Bagel Alley. It's now some nine months later and, after seeing a newspaper article about them decided to try again. Maybe they had some "teething issues" and would have worked out the baking process. Nope - still the same small, thin, gummy bagels. What's more, while the newspaper article suggested that What a Bagel had some new flavors such as rye, the selection was the same as it was last fall. Lots more sugary bagels than Bagel Alley has (none, really), so if that's your kick then you might prefer What a Bagel (or go to Panera, whose bagels are better than these.) Still, I bought a dozen bagels of assorted varieties to take home and see if there were any I liked. The bag was smaller than I get for a dozen at Bagel Alley, but What a Bagel gives you 12 instead of the "baker's dozen" 13 at Bagel Alley, and the bagels were smaller, so I didn't think much of it. Imagine my annoyance when I got home to find only 7 bagels in the bag! Evidently the woman behind the counter had put some of my bagels in a second bag and then didn't give it to me. It's not worth going back to complain. There isn't a lot of seating inside, though most of the tables were unoccupied. Half of them get direct sun through the glass walls and are uncomfortable in the morning - there are only three out of the sun (one directly next to the door). It's back to Bagel Alley for me. read more

I don't understand why New Hampshire just doesn't have good bagel places. Bruegger's pulled all their NH locations years ago, and I haven't had a decent bagel since without leaving the state. These are a step up from a supermarket bagel, I guess, but the salt bagel was coated in fine salt instead of coarse -- which is a really weird choice! it's not like coarse salt is expensive! -- and the texture of the bagels is wrong, too bready and homogeneous. I like to support small business, especially when I can tell how much hard work and genuine care they've put in to something. I come about once a week (jalapeño all day baby!!) and have never had anything but a positive experience. Ordered my breakfast before noticing not a single worker was wearing a mask, or even had one nearby. There were like 5 people there too, is that not a law in NH anymore? I live this place! We go about every other week or so- the employees are friendly, quick, remember us and our order each time. In fact, my boyfriend went without me one week- and they helped him with my order to get it right. I saw some other reviews say that the bagels weren't fresh, or "not the same for this Long Island girl-" you can literally WATCH them make them if you pay attention . I've been a customer of Whata Bagel since the launch and always held it in high regard until now. Let's start with the reality that speaks volumes; they either decided that they don't need a website or let their domain lapse renewal. Either way as of 2/2019 they no longer have a web presence. As a function, you cannot familiarize yourself with the menu and options beforehand unless you've been there multiple times. Now I'm uncertain if I've just been lucky in the past or not, but if you go on Sunday mornings, it seems the bagels, nor muffins are fresh. It is resulting in a subpar product and experience. Stale hard bagels and muffins, crumbling and not melted cheeses on breakfast sandwiches. It could be better during the week, but I suspect the product turnover is high enough on weekends to warrant fresh batches. Ownership might have started getting "cute" with forecasting and now you could be the unlucky soul who pays 8+ dollars on a day old bagel sandwich. Sadly I will need to bid farewell to Whata bagel after several years. I would recommend evaluating other options in the area as the demand has resulted in a resurgence of quick breakfast places. read more

I am glad we didn't bother with reviews- might have missed this. Drove 13 hours yesterday, hotel breakfast was baaaad. Found this in a sorta sketchy strip mall. The sandwiches were all spot on. Had omelets sandwich, lox, and turkey club thing. Generous portions and everything fresh. Staff was polite and cheerful. Place only has a couple of tables, so you may not get one. Also has a bathroom. If we are passing that way again will definitely swing out that way and skip the hotel waffles of doom. read more

This place has already gone downhill. My husband and I would occasionally stop over here for a breakfast sandwich. The bagels and sandwiches have always been decent. We just got home with our sandwiches today and the quality is noticeably different. I ordered a asiago bagel toasted with cream cheese. The bagel is barely toasted but that's the least of the gripes I have. First, I open the bagel and there is barely enough cream cheese to cover the surface of the bagel. I don't need half a container on my sandwich either, but enough to make the sandwich substantial. Lastly, my asiago bagel has ZERO flavor. We won't be going back. Bagel Alley can be a hassle sometimes, but they're consistent. Very disappointed in our trip to whata bagel. read more

Love the bagels. The issue I have is I have been there three times to find them closed. Hours online say they are open. Multiple times I make the drive over to find them closed. Maybe they should update their hours so people will know. There needs to be at least 3 exclamation points st the end of their name. Seriously fresh and delicious bagels with just the right amount of crunchy outside and soft, chewy inside. They toast up perfectly. They put an insane amount of toppings on the specialty bagels. Like, sesame bagels are coated in sesame seeds, not sprinkled. And let's talk about variety! Not only do they have the classics, but they have some with jalapeño, cheese and even bacon. This is not your typical coffee shop that serves bagels. It's a bonafide bagel shop. I have been searching for rainbow bagels everywhere and was so bummed when I was in NYC and didn't have the chance to get them. A friend told me about this place and so I had my husband visit to see what he could find. The first time, they were out of rainbow bagels so they gave him two free bagels to compensate. The second time, he finally got there early enough before they ran out of those colorful little things. Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed with the flavor and the smell reminded me of play dough. The texture was good, but I'm fond of nice big jersey bagels so comparison wise I felt that it lacked. However, the other bagels did impress and I would go to try those out and the other things on the menu. I'm glad there's a place like this nearby but I wish they were open longer. read more

I've now been to this place twice and neither time did they get a simple order right. They do not have a good system of communicating the order from the register to the assembly station. You literally have to watch them make your food and remind them what you ordered. The bagels are good but the service is terrible. Also, who only puts cream cheese on ONE HALF of a bagel? Again, the bagels are good when you coach them through assembling your order correctly, but the service will kill this place. read more

What A Bagel is a very cute little cafe type of bakery with a huge variety of bagel and muffin flavors! My family and I went one weekday morning and although our order was long and complicated, the woman behind the counter was super friendly and very patient with us!!! I tried the bacon cheddar bagel, my cousin got the blueberry, my mom got the jalapeño cheddar, and my grandpa got the egg bagel. The bagels were absolutely delicious!!!! These bagels are great! I've tried the everything bagel, the apple-cinnamon, and the 'rainbow' plain. While I can't speak for all their varieties, their basic bagel is really solid: a little crunchy on the outside, and softer/chewier on the inside. They are different than Bagel Alley bagels (which I also love), and I can understand that people get particular about their preferred style, but make no mistake: these are good bagels too. The 'western' breakfast sandwich my onion bagel was a part of was also delicious (fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked egg). Really excited that there are TWO great bagel places now! read more

Stopped by 'What a Bagel' for the first time today and ordered a couple of breakfast sandwhiches. Typically, I order a sausage, egg, and cheese on a sesame seed bagel when I stop at Dunkin's for breakfast and have become accustomed to that as the standard for what a bagel is. While I don't mean to disparage the Dunkin's bagels, I have to say the one sandwhich I just had from here was remarkable (saving the other for lunch if I can hold off that long). The freshness of the bagel and crunchiness of that toasted bread was a treat on this Sunday morning and the egg was cooked perfectly; not too hard. The staff was friendly, the estsblishment clean, and turnaround on my order was quick. The only reason I did not give this place a 5th star was really the awkward parking lot. I wish it had better access to East Hollis St. and that you didn't have this little slalom course to traverse in order to park. No reflection on the product itself of course but it is the one negative thing that sticks out for me. Dunkin's is fast and conveniently on my way to work where 'What a Bagel' is unfortunately in the opposite direction from where I go. But for weekend morning runs I think I just found a favorite gem of a place. Update: yah, that 2nd sandwhich didn't stand a chance. 30 minutes after having the 1st one the 2nd joined its sibling. I have been going to What A Bagel for a while now, decent bagels and decent prices. I drive across town to get there so not so easy but they beat Bagel Alleys prices so I didn't mind. Last week during a road race I took the trip through all the road closures and detours to get my usual bagel, cinnamon sugar. They didn't have it, and only had a few selections for some reason. The area was packed with people so you would have thought they would Overstock instead of Understock, but oh well, I walked out without buying what THEY wanted to sell. This morning I go and try again, and there's a sign on the door saying CLOSED UNTIL 9am. That was it for me, I went back to Bagel Alley and was happy they had what I wanted. It reminded me how good they are so I don't mind paying a few pennies more to know that they'll have what I drove so far to get. When trying to build a new small business, this kind of inconsistency can cost customers, it certainly did with me, sorry What A Bagel. Maybe I'll try back in a year if you're still open. 12/29/18 Well I gave them another try, I can tell there's new ownership. There were hardly any bagels ready and had to wait about 10 minutes for bagels to come out of oven. They changed a recipe for the sugar bagels too, not good. Why do people buy businesses then run them into the ground?? Same thing happened to The Sausage King of Nashua, it was great, then the new owner changed everything and now it's a failing BBQ joint! We hadn't been in a bagel shop in a few years (living in the Deep South), so we were excited and a tad overwhelmed at all the choices. We had jalapeño cheddar and bacon cheddar with plain cream cheese. The bagels were large and tasty. I'll start with the one good thing I can say about this establishment. The man who took our order was very polite. After that, I received a bagel with egg, cheese, and a hair on it. My daughter had some mystery brown stuff in her cream cheese. Was it chocolate? Was it a raisin? Was it excrement? Who knows - I didn't let her finish to find out. I ordered a cappuccino and got some syrup sweet drink. Last I checked, cappuccinos are frothy milk and espresso. Ownership changed since my last review. They no longer sell my favorite bagel, the cheddar jalapeno, which was so original and something you could not get elsewhere. They also advertise bakers dozen on their sign and on the receipt but you only get 12 bagels. The atmosphere is nice, they have outdoor seating, and take credit which are all pluses. Bagels are good. We've been to What a Bagel several times, and have absolutely loved everything we've tried. The bagels are fresh and delicious, and there are so many delicious options for cream cheese flavors and sandwiches. The staff is friendly and the location is easy to get to with plenty of parking. Even on weekend mornings and lunchtime, when I would expect it to be busy, they turnaround orders pretty quickly. I'm from Long Island, NY, so I know something about really good bagels. When I walked into this place, the bagels looked pretty good, and on a Saturday morning at 10 am, you expect a line, so that was not the problem. When it was my turn at the counter, I ordered a "Bundle" of a dozen bagels, based on what I saw that was still available and what I knew our company would want to eat, and some tubs of cream cheese. They were already sold out of many regular bagels like Poppyseed. I moved to the side, to wait for someone to pick my bagels for me. The snotty cashier said, "One of the girls will help you." No one helped. No one. Two women were behind the counter making grilled and toasted bagel orders, and they ignored me, along with the snotty cashier that took my order. As people behind me in line placed their orders, the bagels that I wanted disappeared - they served the people BEHIND me in line first! The snotty cashier actually told one of the women making the toasted orders to "Pull the other bagels before putting together this bundle." "Why?," I wondered! I was in line ahead of all of those people! So, one by one, all the bagels disappeared while I waited. I demanded a refund, and the snotty cashier actually told me that I would have to wait because there was a long line! Thank goodness a kind person next in line said, "Go ahead, please." The snotty cashier said, "Oh, they should have pulled your order first," even though I had heard her right in front of me tell the two women to pull the other orders first!! NEVER AGAIN. Try Bagel Alley instead - they know more about customer service than this place! I'm guessing What a Bagel will be out of business soon, if they don't get their customer service act together. read more

Radio was so loud I could not hear myself think. Impossible to read the paper. That could be overlooked if the bagels were good. Had a pumpernickel. Not good. No taste at all. Closer to cardboard, than pumpernickel. Cold brew coffee was ok though. Not even close to the "real deal" in Nashua, Bagel Alley. I visit this place almost every morning to get my cinnamon sugar bagels toasted with butter... on occasion will get one of there fresh stacked breakfast sandwiches which are all really good !! I really need to make a comment that I have seen afew comments on here about "burnt" bagels ?? Normally I would keep to myself and not comment but I find myself having a very hard time believing that to be true.... I have seen the owner and his 1 and only employee toss away bagels with the smallest imperfections in the trash so "burnt" bottoms........ nah I'm not buying it !!
