Miss Pong, the director, has been great. When my first son was there, and I was a nervous mom, she was very kind and reassuring. Miss Melissa took the time to help him out of his shell and encouraged him to have fun with his friends. I knew I was leaving my kids in the best hands. I was very impressed with the education they received. My second son told me all about palindromes! When I asked Miss Anne if I was hearing him correctly, she told me that it was something she told the class, in a very basic way. But he retained that knowledge and now he likes to tell me when it's 11:11 and "that's a palindrome mom!" The facilities are very good, I liked the layout very much. The playground is just the right size for little kids, the fence around it is very reassuring with little kids running all over! I also really appreciated the security of getting into the building. I wish our grammar school had that system. I have a third son, who is too young for the program. I have no doubts where he will be going when it's his turn.

Where does one begin a stupid online review when a teacher physically assaults your child? It's…read morehardly a means of retribution, but there are other avenues being pursued to that extent. I make this review more as a warning to the other parents who send their children to Chesterbrook. My wife and I had enough issues dealing with the "educators" at Chesterbrook when our child came home with a head injury or covered in human feces - but if you batter our child, you have started something you cannot stop. Perhaps other parents reading this will feel the same way. To be sure, we are in no way 'helicopter parents' and believe in discipline. But, there is, of course discipline and abuse, and this crossed the line. Our son became scared and hesitant to attend Chesterbrook, and would tell us approx. a week later about this incident. Upon hearing this, we met with the "principal" - who showed us the video of the "teacher" being physical with our child. Oddly enough, the principal agreed that the contact was inappropriate and that steps would be taken to remedy the situation. Upon picking up our child a mere three hours later, we were told that the principal had been fired. Following that, in an act of retaliation, we were told that our child was moved to a class of children two years younger than him. When we met with the district manager (or whatever she claimed to be), she not only admitted that she had never video and laughed in our face while we met with her. Completely unprofessional and indicative of somebody who cannot handle their job responsibilities, much less have some control over the well being of children. I could (and would like to) name the relevant individuals, but that will only serve to have this post removed. Nevertheless, those responsible will be held responsible in court. But, my advice - ask questions and get your child out of Chesterbrook asap.

A few months ago, we were looking for a new place to send our children. I had really had it with all of the changes in staff and leadership at the school. I really loved the teachers when we first started but the atmosphere had changed and the teachers were very unhappy. I was beginning to see that it was hurting my children's experience at school. Right before we were leaving Chesterbrook, there was announcement that a new principal (Jen) would be transferring from the Plainfield Chesterbrook. I've never seen a school turn around so quickly (and I have worked in education for 15 years myself). I noticed an immediate change in teacher morale, cleanliness of the school and communication with parents. Because of the changes, we decided to stay. Jen sets high expectations for her teachers and is a great communicator. The teachers seem happy and the kids also seem much happier. Jen has also led new changes such as getting organic milk into the school, ordering new furniture and adding new learning materials. I hope the school continues to make these amazing improvements. As for the curriculum, my 4 year old just read her first book last night, teaches me words in Spanish, can add and subtract and talks about all of the "cool things Ms. Becca teaches her" at dinner each night. My kids are safe, appreciated and have a lot of fun at school. I'm not sure I can ask for much more!

I did my research on our area preschools (9+ schools) and ultimately decided to have Hosanna! as our preschool for many reasons. The school classrooms are large, filled with fun toys, treehouses, and interactive play. The teachers are the most loving and caring and truly know my daughter and let her personality shine. The director makes sure you know everything that is going on and the communication between parents and teachers is comforting. The preschool offers many activities for parents to join throughout the year, which have been very special moments. The outside playground is well kept and continues to grow with new activities added, like this year's Mud Kitchen! There is also a large indoor gym for when it's raining or too cold. The cost is average for the Elgin area and worth every penny! Our (almost) two years of preschool have been so enjoyable and my daughter has grown academically as well as socially/emotionally. If you are a minority, specifically a Black person, you and your child would not be treated like other races. Their rules are broken for "non-Blacks" but a Black person is expected to follow them at all times. You and your child would be made to feel uncomfortable and bringing the issue to the staff only makes you feel more ostracized. I have been strongly considering sending my daughter back to public school. They claim to be more advanced in their studies than a public school, but my daughter is reading a book that she read in Public School three years ago. I am so disappointed in myself for choosing this school. The way that I feel treated by them is not against the law, but I do feel that it is a moral issue. Is this really the Catholic faith?

My son attended Happy Times from fall of 2023 to spring of 2024. As an early childhood…read moreprofessional, I did great research into the quality of care and reputation of the schools in our neighborhood. Happy Times seemed like a place that followed modern educational philosophies, valued parental involvement and professional development for their teachers. About halfway through the year, I was alerted to some "alarming" behavior my son displayed-pretending to sword fight. I talked to my son immediately about why this behavior was not okay and would not be tolerated. However, my husband and I continued to be pressed to answer for his "alarming" sword-swinging behavior. The director described his behavior as "violent," "slitting throats" and "criminal." To hear my son's behavior defined as a "criminal" who was "slitting throats" sounded like a particular kind of dog-whistle that did not sit nicely. To be spoken to this way by my peers in the early education community was shocking. To be spoken to this way as a family in the community was heartbreaking. We have repeatedly asked in the past for our son's occupational therapist to be brought into the school and have repeatedly been either ignored or dismissed. We asked again if our OT could come into the classroom and observe for any particular sensory inputs that would have led to a meltdown. They cited a concern for children's and teacher's privacy, and also needing to accommodate two children with severe stranger anxiety. Because of these things, they could not allow outside individuals to enter the school. However, when asked why it is that they routinely allow librarians, firefighters, and other parents into the building, we were told that they have many children to take care of and couldn't just focus on our son. We asked our OT to join the conversation via email and were told, in writing, that they were denying access to in-school therapeutic services for our kid. It became increasingly clear during this conversation and the subsequent back and forth emails, that this was not about the caliber of my son's behavior. To my husband and I, it felt like a pointed condemnation of our parenting, a grab for power and respect, and a flagrant disregard for best practices in early education. I was appalled at this whole situation, and questioned my own judgment in choosing this school. As a POC raising another POC, I was sad for what my son had to learn so early in his life-that people will look at him differently and his behavior will be judged against years of institutional bias. I'm not writing this review to tar the pristine reputation of a long-standing school. I'm writing to inform parents who are making the fraught decision of judging who will be included in the care and raising of their children, and the internal moralities they hold. Families who are teaching their children to be kind and empathetic, families of color, families of neurodiverse children, diasporic parents looking for a sense of community and belonging, I hope you consider my review and what it might mean for your children.

My girls grow so much every year and the teachers take such good care of the kids. We are so lucky to be enrolled at Happy Times!
