5 stars -- A Hidden Gem in Buckhannon The Whistle Stop Bar & Grill is exactly the kind of local spot you hope to find when traveling through small-town West Virginia. Miss Deborah and I stopped in for a weekday lunch and were lucky to grab a table after a short wait--the place was bustling, and for good reason. We started with the fried cheese curds, served with a garlic aioli that was so good we considered asking for a second helping. Miss Deborah kept it simple with French fries and mac & cheese, both well-prepared and satisfying. I had the steak salad, which was perfectly portioned and featured tender, flavorful beef. Every bite hit the mark. Our server, Taylor, was a standout--friendly, attentive, and on top of everything despite the lunch rush. This is clearly a local favorite, and now we know why. Great food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

The owner should make the employees read this, then go one step further and make sure they understand it.

I recommend avoiding the large grouchy fowl mouthed female bartender. I wish I could say something about food but I didn't get any here. I ended up going down the road to FIREHOUSE DAWGS, getting some absolutely amazing food, and filling out form on ADA website instead. Do what you want but I will avoid this place. Here's why. Whistle Stop is a bar grill restaurant, I had never been there before today. Seen great reviews online thought I would try. It was about 340pm the place was quite packed. I seen 5 empty seats at the end of very long bar. I chose the middle of the empty seats which where in the back part of restaurant away from door. I had my service dogs vest in my hand, the SD was on my arm. I sat down in the bar chair, SD layed down in my lap. head down and barely visible from where the bartender stood. He is almost 6 yr old chihuahua, prescribed by two different doctors. I presented, at request for paperwork for by bartender 1, pics of his certificate and both signed letters from both doctors to the bar tender. Another bar tender approached, she was rude from first word. Bartender 1 told her he was a service dog, bartender 2 told me I couldn't sit at bar. She told me there was a room in back that I could sit, it is their policy. I politely said he is no trouble and I'm not trying to cause any. Please read this. I showed her screenshot from ADA website showing the rules that govern SDs, she didn't look, so I read the short part about specifically about access. She cut me off, raised her voice, and said I ain't F$$$in arguing with you, eat where ever the F$$$ u want. I said no thank you I will go elsewhere, bartender 1 said "I apologize", I said "thank you, but she is wrong", (me referring to bartender 2). I said nothing else walked out, feeling about 2 inches tall, after being yelled at like a child and cussed, by bartender 2, in front of a room full of people. The dog was not touched by anyone, never touched the floor, bar, or anything else, nor did he bark, whine, or do anything but lay in my lap. He never made a sound. I was in the building less than 5 mins. There was absolutely no reason for bartender 2 to talk to me in the manner that she did. Someone needs to explain the laws set by ADA governing SDs to the employees of this restaurant. And bartender 2 could use someone good with manners and how to talk to people help her. The owner should make the employees read this, then go one step further and make sure they understand it. They should also look up the punishment for violating this ADA code. That bartender is just lucky I'm too busy to sue her. And one more thing I forgot to go in detail about. My service dog is almost 6 yr old twice doctor prescribed, certified with USASD at 6 weeks old, doctor prescribed at 1.5 yrs old and again prescribed by another doctor at 3 yrs old. He has accompanied me to 100s of restaurants and sporting events to watch my kids, we have stayed at dozens of hotels, been in hospitals and airports, along with many other attractions and events. We have never been asked to leave anywhere, not once because of misbehavior or accidents. Out of literally thousands of places we have went. This place is one of a handful, literally less than 5, places that denied or presented us with subpar service. And all 4 times we were in less the place than 5 mins. People need to understand disability is not always visible, the ADA exists for a reason, the only stupid people are those who refuse to learn, and just one employee can give a business a bad name.

One of the most relaxed and inviting atmospheres I've had in quite a long time. We were greeted with a smile and a kind word. At first glance it would seem to be a relatively basic bar. The assumption for a newcomer like us would be that any of the "bar food" would be just that. Basic barfood. However, that would be pretty far from the truth here at Whistle Stop. As a fan of all things railroad, the fact that it sits right next to railroad tracks and has a lot of classic rail memorabilia was very fun to experience. Although the onion rings aren't the best I've ever had they were very good and I would order them again. The beers came in frosted mugs and were fresh and cold and tasty. The pulled pork barbecue french fries were quite amazing. The pulled pork was moist and flavorful, the right amount of seasoning. It paired well with the homemade barbecue sauce which was sweet and not too heavy. Combined with melted cheese and the "done right" french fries, a full mouthful was a bite of pleasure. Most wings that are typically served, especially dry rub wings, tend to be very dry. One usually gets either good flavor or good texture but not usually both. These wings however were amazing. They were very moist and tender, yet the flavor was fantastic both on the skin as well as into the flesh of the medium sized chicken wings. If you're ever in the area, and want a truly nifty experience, then this is definitely a place to go. By the way, one telling sign about the cleanliness of an establishment is the bathrooms. The men's restroom was very surprisingly clean, deodorized, and basically well-maintained. Makes a person feel comfortable about eating food in a place that keeps the bathrooms clean.

Loved this place. Just a cozy little bar with great food. Great tasting onion rings. The blackberry moonshine wings were absolutely wonderful. Server was friendly. We will definitely visit this place again sometime when we are on another trip to the area.

Tuesday burger, fries and beer lunch was terrific. Train and Almost Heaven hamburgers were done medium-rare to perfection. Place was busy. We found seats at the bar. Server was helpful and spot-on. Music was outstanding. Atmosphere and environment reminded me of some of my favorite dive bars...only better maintained. This Stop keeps driving that train....

The exterior…read morereminded me of one of the better dive-bars in Philly (that's where I'm from)--homey and comfortable. Andy, the bartender and maybe owner, was very relaxed and friendly. If I recall, we even shared the same birthday. Place itself had a cool bunker vibe, very underground. Big brick walls, almost claustrophobic with small little rooms housing pool tables and a beautiful fireplace, which I'm sure would be cozy as fuck throughout some cold winter months. The infrastructure reminded me of an underground club in NY called Basement, which is the basement of an old glass mill. The locals (Patty in particular) were as friendly and amicable as possible. I told them I was from Philly, and we talked a little about politics. I was a bit worried that I'd be seen as an outsider, but those worries subsided after they bought me a drink. Shame I had to hit the road so quickly (six hour drive ahead of me). In the wake of the election and the shit show that is the U.S. culture-wars, I think we found a moment of kinship in each other's company. I wish more moments in life could be like my experience at Mid-Town Lounge.

Full disclosure, this place has broken my heart and as a patron that has spent well over $10k here in the last several years I'm at a loss for words. I met my partner at the Billy - yeah that still happens - and its gutting and egregious to see such feckless owners swoop into this lovely Appalachian business and run this with the care one would expect from a a Wayfair adorned short-term rental. Yes, the bones are still good here, but the superficial facade of community runs as deep as the chipping yellow paint on the "Billy Arrow" outside. The new Billy, in my deeply storied opinion on West Virginia history, sees right through the propped-up idea of "community" and it equates to the long history of outside interest here in the Mountain State that saw countless greedy men move in to extract and exploit the resources of the good people of Tucker County. The good people of West Virginia. I see it everyday and its no more true then than it is now with the Billy Motel and Ish Kitchen. You can almost smell the lack of community awareness and grasp with every high priced pour of el Toro cocktails. Its sickening to see my favorite establishment in this state now owned buy careless ownership that at one hand talk about community, but stab their "own" in the back. Its not community focused. Big time. One would think an owner in a town of 600ish with about 15-20 potential employees that would work service would respect the roots laid out by those here. Those that came before. But, I digress, because as the former states, its all about making as much money as one can and screwing over the locals when one does swoop in as an out of state interest. Its so, so sad. I will no longer be spending a dime here and have canceled all future bookings as I had planned about $2k worth of lodging this Spring through Fall for work and leisure that brings me here from Fayetteville all the time. I am not saying its a bad spot and the locals there are doing their best, but just know this place is coal-baron full on and if they care so much about the community they so share I would love to see them put their money where their mouth is. But, as a native West Virginian, and if you know anything about the state, we all know that will not happen. Montani Semper Liberi (for the DC/AZ folks, that means Mountaineers are Always free )
