C.J. Maggie's is a basic bar-restaurant spot in downtown Elkins. The menu is large and varied with plenty of starters, sandwiches, and main entrees. During my several stops there over the past year, the food has been reliable though not particularly noteworthy. Overall, there are plenty of options here for a range of tastes. OK, then why three stars? I'm don't want to disparage this place but the consistent problem I encountered during three visits spread out over a year (most recently January 2025) is that they appear to enormously understaffed for both the size of the restaurant and breadth of the menu. On all three visits, food and drink orders took a long time to arrive. During the most recent visit with a party of four, two meals (same sandwich) arrived, followed by the third meal about 5 minutes later, and the last meal about 5 minutes after the third. Sigh. The staff members were uniformly nice, just seemingly overwhelmed. I will most likely will return in my next visit to Elkins, but as a party if one at the bar to see if there's a service difference. You'll get a good meal here, just be forewarned about possible service challenges. read more

After about 10 minutes we were seated with menus. We were excited as the menu, which has many options, looked very promising. We're traveling and searching for a place that had decent cost but quality food and vibes. While the service was slow, they were 100% transparent about it considering the low staff which we did not mind as we were in no rush. The food was amazeballs! So so so many options for any craving..between the Thai noddles with chicken, Street Tacos, Pot Pie, and especially the Alfredo Pizza everything was delicious!! We came in at around 3 PM on a Wednesday and ordered: 40 Miles of Bad Road Nachos - These were almost flavorless, had very little chicken on them and NO beef, and featured a flavorless orange sauce in lieu of actual cheese. Ridiculously overpriced for food that doesn't even reach Taco Bell standards. Mediterranean Pasta - Served in a "bowl" that was so shallow it was essentially a plate. It was basically a greasy bowl of pasta with a couple of chunks of chicken and some Feta cheese in it. Chicken Quesadilla - Not as bad as the first two dishes, but the chicken was mushy and again, flavor almost completely absent. Fries - They were great, and the only thing we ordered that was worth eating. The restrooms both reeked like sewage and there were no hand towels in the women's bathroom. The service sucked too. I'd forgotten my glasses, and couldn't read the list of sides. When I explained that to our server, he pointed to them on the menu instead of just telling me what they were, which was not helpful at all. We were there around 3 PM and the restaurant was empty when we arrived. Shortly after we were seated, another couple arrived and they were seated in the booth right next to ours, instead of giving us a little space and privacy. We were never asked if we wanted refills or dessert. We've eaten at CJ Maggies several times over the years, but this place sucks now and we won't ever go back. We'll find someplace else to eat in Elkins, and we suggest you do the same. read more

We visited on a a Sunday evening. No wait at approximately 6pm. Hostess and server were friendly and helpful with questions we had about the menu, what's popular, recommended items, etc. we ordered drinks and the server brought the wrong beer by mistake. She let us keep it so it doesn't go to waste and quickly brought the correct beer. Food came out fairly quickly. Portions are reasonable to very generous. Chili was a bit sweeter than I expected but it was OK overall. Jambalaya was huge with lots of chicken and shrimps. It was too much to finish. They were surprisingly out of steamed broccoli as a side so I tried sautéed mushrooms. Nothing special about them; they were fine. Their soft drink cups are HUGE and they're free refills. We liked the interior decor and had a nice vibe. We would come back again next time we are in Elkins. We liked the wide variety of items on the menu. read more

This place has the potential for 5 stars as some of the food and presentation really is spectacular. Their bread with herb butter is spectacular and so is the Thai peanut pasta I ordered. Even their side salad has a cute presentation and they have an endless selection of dressings. I wish I could give it a 5 star rating but they don't have a guest WiFi, despite having multiple networks, it was suggested I try the restaurant across the street WiFi... also, service started out strong and then my server kind of disappeared. She was nice enough but the inconsistency was weird. Also, they charge a premium for credit cards which left me a little salty. I wish the price listed was the price. The fried green beans were great - they came with a tasty sauce, but had so much flavor on their own that they really didn't need anything. The Thai chicken pizza - SUPER happy with it. A lot of flavor and textures... the crust was perfectly chewy. My husband ordered the baked steak w mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. He said he would order it again. Went here with my husband on a very busy Sunday night. We were out on a short wait and seated within about 30 minutes. The waitress did a great job for having a full section. We got a round of frozen drinks (delicious) and some bacon wrapped jalapeños to start (also, very tasty). For dinner we ordered the pad Thai and the fajitas, both took maybe 15 minutes to hit the table it was so fast and tastes great. We can't wait to come back. read more

Decided on lunch at C.J. Maggies. Major disappointment. I started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which tasted more like raw flour than spinach or artichoke. My Reuben sandwich came on barely toasted bread. There was plenty of corned beef on it, but just a scattering of sauerkraut and an undetectable amount of dressing. No Swiss cheese. The hand cut chips were good, but the best item I had was the dill pickle that came with the sandwich. Overall, totally underwhelming and not worth the money. We are here for dinner on a Thursday evening. It was very, very loud inside due to all the tables with children, not by any fault of the establishment. We ordered the steak dinner with creamy corn and French fries with gravy and the opened faced roast beef sandwich with French fries with gravy and French onion soup. Our waitress was busy as heck but did a good job keeping up and making sure everyone had what they needed. The french onion soup was very, very delicious. My steak dinner was great- except the fries. The creamy corn was very good, and the steak perfect!! Their gravy is so good you could drink it! But their fries were terrible. We even sent one order back bc they were so dry and not cooked enough. The new order was just as gross but cooked more. They tasted old and freezer burnt. Or like they were thawed and refrozen and thawed again. I guess they got a bad batch bc how can u mess up store bought crinkle fries!! LOL. Anyway, it's a good thing their gravy was so good to disguise the taste of the fries. It has secret ingredients in that make is just so creamy and delicious. The flavor was just spot on. The open faced roast beef could have been great but the meat was so dry it was hard to eat- even with 3 containers of gravy on it. We would eat there again but make different choices. We love Elkins, CJ Maggie's. The food is always so good and the waitress we've had the last several times is amazing. We were there again over the weekend, and I forgot my purse on the hook by the table. I didn't notice until the next morning on my way to ski. I was devastated. All my money and IDs... everything was in there. I called early in the morning and spoke with the nicest man. He couldn't find it at first, but then did some investigating and found it safely hidden away. I tried to give him a cash award, he refused to take it. I really tried too. Class Acts! Recently I went to Cj Maggie's, I ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo and I added shrimp. when i received my meal i ate it up licitly split. i did enjoy the meal in the moment, but as the evening went by I noticed my stomach was rolling, i was faced with the sick feeling and the urge to throw up. i got home, and throughout the night i threw up 5 times at least before i was able to settle down and get some sleep, i believe the shrimp wasn't cooked right and i got food poisoning. 5+ stars! I loved it. I was traveling home from Snowshoe Mountain after a three day music festival and stopped in Elkins. I was tired and hungry. First of all, the place is so cool, kitschy memorabilia all over but in a fascinating way, not too jumbled. It has a cozy environment and very kind people working. My boyfriend and I were sat in a private booth, hidden from view of other patrons, and that's exactly what we needed, it's like this restaurant was our beacon to sanity after being exhausted with a long drive still ahead. Once tucked away in the adorable booth, we became very giddy with excitement over the menu, it begins with their testament to delivering freshness each day. We were pumped, we'd chosen correctly. The menu is humungo by-the-way, definitely something for everyone. We landed on fried green beans (killer), veggie wood fired pizza, and chicken Alfredo. It was all so YUMMY! The meal even came with complimentary bread (super soft/luscious) and homemade whipped dipping sauce. All of this with sodas for about $40, price was right! We could have ordered half as much but what fun is that? Thank you staff and owners for providing such a perfect stop on the way home in such a neat little city. We'll be back! read more

I wish I could leave a perfect review, but they were a few issues. The atmosphere is really great. Lots of antiques, cozy little booths, even if they're not that comfortable. Great varied selection of menu items. There is no way you couldn't find something that you would like in this place. I ordered the beef Burgundy pasta and I would've rated it an eight out of 10 but need to only give it a five out of 10 because they included lots of tomatoes when I requested several times "no tomatoes". The weight person did offer to have the dish remade but I waited so long for it to begin with I was starving. I also don't mind some parsley flakes now and then, but they had parsley stems that were like little sticks. The meat was delicious as well as the mushrooms and sauce. Pasta was very well prepared. The salad dressing, which was bacon vinaigrette was excellent, I was, however, disappointed that I was not offered any type of bread. The prices were very fair, and the soft drinks were 32 ounces. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back again. read more

Usually I order Pizza, today I tried the spaghetti with sauce, no meat. The sauce was tangy, chunks of tomatoes, onion, very impressed. I order mash potatoes with gravy, because I like mash potatoes. I was surprised that the gravy didn't taste like can gravy. Service was pretty good with only one server. The food didn't take long. The place is decorated to look like an old store from the 1900's. This is 4.5*! We came in from the highway as we were traveling back to KY from WV and wanted some lunch. Cute place - lots of room, including a place for large events. We were relatively quickly seated in a booth and browsed the menu. First, this menu is quite large! Second, the portions are HUGE. If you do want a lot of food, you'll be very happy. If you aren't super hungry or you don't want leftovers, consider splitting a portion with someone else. I had the sweet tea - YUM! (!) - and chicken pot pie. The pot pie comes with two sides - I got chili (a whole bowl) and Mac & cheese (another whole bowl). So basically, this was three meals. Plus, the pot pie was huge, and I ended up eating it over two meals. So really, for the reasonable price, I got 4 meals. And they were all really good. DH enjoyed his food as well, thought service was friendly, but agreed the portions were "big, almost too big". Overall, recommend, just bring your appetite or be prepared to take stuff home. read more

We stopped here on our way to Logan, OH and Elkins is a wonderful little town, We stopped at CJ Maggie's as it was within walking distance of the hotel. The host was less than interested and barely acknowledged us. He came across as rude. The waitress was fantastic and gets 5 out of 5 stars. The pepperoni and cheese calzone was also worth a five while the 40 Miles of Bad Road Nachos lived up to their name and only gets 3 out of 5 stars. The calzone and the waitress alone would have given this restaurant a 5 out of 5, but the Nachos and host dragged them down to a 3.5. Not likely to return. read more

There are only a handfull of restaurants in town for a realy good meal and this one appears by far to be the most popular among families visiting their student children, based upon my observations. It has that "college vibe." It's not particularly my favorite, but my adult children who graduated from Frostburg and WVU alway manage to get the entire family here for a meal whenever we are in town. The menu does not appear to have changed in the 20 odd years that we have been comming. My favorites remain jambalaya, pizza, jalapeño poppers, and dark beer. It a great well rounded restaurant and bar! It has private booths for date night, big tables for a group and a nice bar with good beer and TV to catch the game. Cute place! We just got snacks. I had a house salad with blue cheese dressing (freshly made blue cheese dressing) We shared nachos. The serving was enough for 3 or more people for sure. My daughter got the chicken strips appetizer which was more than enough for a meal. Every time we asked for ingredients to be changed, (no croutons on the salad, change the ingredients on the nachos etc) our waitress couldn't have been nicer.
