The rooms are decorated beautifully and the King size beds are very comfortable!! The breakfasts are like no other I have ever had! Tiramisu French toast, breakfast pizza, scrambled eggs with zucchini to name a few. And the homemade biscuits are unbelievable!! There are lots of things to do in the area. There are wineries, breweries and a distillery. There are places related to history like the Appomattox Courthouse and the D-Day Memorial. There are lots of hiking trails. There are some great restaurants to visit as well. Some that we have been to are Vito's, Mountain Mamas, and Blue Mountain Barrel House. Book a couple nights, you will not regret it!!

We stayed in the Rembrandt room, each room features a famous master's name. While no Rembrandt's in the room, the whole Manor features the excellent modern art from Jan-Willem and family. The room was well themed with curated pieces and decorative touches to match the art hanging form the wall. The decorative effect made you feel like you were staying at an arts friend's home not at a B&B, which was great. Nancy and Jan-Willem were gracious hosts very willing to provide area information and recommendations. Breakfast was excellent featuring fresh fruit and veggies from their garden. Their grounds were open and featured a large pond with 3 amazing koi including a golden koi that looked like a mythic dragon. And there are 2 sometimes 3 grounds cats that are either hunting or rolling over for belly rubs. Only minimal down sides; you are about 10 min from downtown Lexington, the front rooms, while nice and breeze do pick up some road noise, and the shower pressure was a bit low, but nothing to take away from a great visit. Since this was an art weekend we enjoyed three meals per day in the dining room. Art instruction was given by Jan-Willem and everyone learned something new even though 4 of the guests had had several years of art lessons. The property is situated about 20 min north of downtown Bedford close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can take a stroll on the property and enjoy the numerous plants and flowers native to the area. There's also a small creek to check out. We enjoyed sitting on the porch covered with different plants and greenery to watch the local hummingbirds buzz around and visit flowers. Our bedroom was cozy with a super comfy bed, sitting area to watch TV, and private bathroom with excellent shower pressure. There was also a small fridge in the common area to store perishable items from our cooler. Sally was a wonderful B&B host and made unique and tasty breakfasts each morning keeping in mind our dietary restrictions. Overall the experience was pleasant and relaxing. I look forward to making a future visit. P.S. - Sally also creates magnificent stained glass art which she sells if you're interested. Bring some spending cash in case you find a piece that catches your eye. You won't regret it.

The host left information about the area and pamphlets for things to do and see in the area which is a very nice touch too for someone who has never stayed in the area like myself. The kitchen is stocked with things you would need to cook, make tea and coffee which is very cool but bring things to cook (meats and such). There are restaurants about 20 minutes away but if you are looking for the retreat and just wanting to stay at the cabin there is also a firepit and grill out back available. We stayed in the Lakeside cabin and it…read morewas very comfortable with all the amenetis of home (including wi-fi and a full kitchen with a dishwasher) plus a hot tub on the back porch with a perfect view of the lake. There are a couple of hiking trails on the property itself plus there is good fishing in the lake (I caught a couple of nice bluegill thanks to Lisa's tip on the best fishing spot) and you can use kayaks, a paddle boat and a row boat as well. Each cabin also has a firepit, grill and picnic table. The property location is perfect as well and you're only a couple of miles from a Dollar General, grocery store, and most importantly wineries and breweries while still being in a really quiet place. There are couple of minor issues to keep in mind but don't let them stop you from staying here. The lighting in the cabin's living was a little dim so it could be a little hard to read at night if you don't move right next to a lamp. The beds were comfortable but the mattresses were just a little hard but that's just personal preference. Things were pretty quiet outside when we were there but I could see the lake getting a little busy if all four cabins were full and everyone wanted to use the lake at the same time. Also keep in mind that pets are allowed in most of the cabins and I believe people are supposed to keep their dogs on leashes but didn't always do so. Duane and Lisa are awesome people and provide the southern hospitality that you'd expect. A storm was coming the day we were supposed to check in and they emailed us to let us know we could check in earlier than usual that day or even the night before to make sure we stayed safe. I'd come back here for sure and highly recommend checking this place out.

We stayed in the Equestrian Room, which had one of the most beautiful bedrooms I have ever stayed in, with a homey smaller room immediately adjacent so that my daughter could have a little privacy. The complimentary breakfast served the next morning was better than any restaurant. A mammoth omelet that was as light as it was flavorful was complimented by mouth watering blueberry stuffed french toast that could have been a meal (or dessert) all by itself. Our hosts Iris and Patrick were polite, helpful, friendly but never intrusive. If you have business or vacation plans anywhere near Lexington, VA, you owe yourself a stay at the 1868 Magnolia House Inn.
