From the mainstream and yet still excellent London Pride to some very interesting Wherry from Norfolk, a number of local breweries and obviously a couple of lagers for those with the palate of a child. Never fewer than five tip top ales on the go though. This is a pub that has wooden floors too. Not the vomit yellow faux wood that has infected so many pubs of late. They are old. They have had beer spilt on them. They are terrific. There is also a Northamptonshire skittles table here which seems always to be available. This is also a pub for watching rugby. The landlord is a Gloucester fan, but let not this put you off. After a home game, the place will be full of Saints supporters. Drinking real ale and eating pork scratchings. I recommend you do the same. Watch rugby, drink ale and eat pigs. It's brilliant. Oh, should also add that it is in a beautiful location in Kingsthorpe Village, has a stonking quiz night, a lovely little garden, is the perfect place to sit with a pint in the summer and watch the Swifts and Swallows at play, does some food which I've not tried (apart from the scratchings and nuts, which did what scratchings and nuts do really). The service proved to be very poor. Wine only arrived after the starters were finished and then only after we had requested it. When it did arrive it was just deposited on the table, not poured, no tasting offered. The table nearby was possibly less well served, after 40 minutes the starters came out, and the mains took over 75 minutes from them sitting down. We had empty glasses on the table whilst serving staff went past at least a dozen times, we eventually asked for them to be removed. When our food finally arrived the food is actually quite good: my mixed grill was quite tasty, but my partner's halloumi was undercooked (not crispy or squeaky) and the tzatziki didn't taste of mint or have a kick of garlic and lemon which is very disappointing, it tasted more like tartare sauce! The creme brulee let the side down again: the 'dipping strawberries' on top with dark and white chocolate were lovely, but the sugar on top of the brulee wasn't caramelised, so no crunchy top although the custard beneath was good. Overall a strange mixed result. Perhaps if they replace the front of house staff things would be better, but the kitchen needs to work a little harder too We probably won't return for a meal, but if you fancy a nice drink by the canal on a good day recommended.

The food is quite nice to be fair and the staff seem friendly enough. The pub itself boasts a great canal side location which is fantastic in the summer months watching the boats go by. The interior is fresh and welcoming and the locals are friendly. I will visit again but I won't be able to drink as much as I would like to due to the extortionate prices of their ales and beers. Not sure if I would eat there again as their are cheaper options in the area that are just as good.

After ordering straight away we received our very simple starters after half hours wait, wolfing them down as we were starving, they were gone in under five minutes leaving us to wait over another hour and a half for the main. By the time it was served the table next to us had left refusing to pay the bill and we had been told two meals and a round of drinks would not have to be paid for. This was not adequate, and it really was a shame as the food was good if a little cold, but maybe my kindness comes from the second Complimentry cosmo. Really hope they pull up their socks, food could be so much better if they got it out faster.

Although numbers are a trickle up at the Earls manor they were surprisingly busy for a credit crunch Thursday night at the 'Halt', me mum treating the family to a good slap up meal from her Premium Bond win. The staff were very pleasant although our table for five (four at best) was appropriately squashed up and hidden away with the rest of us who there only for the February cheap deal, a free bottle of 'plonk' with every two main courses for £20 hard to turn down. Yes it was the old trick of serving you a ropey overpriced main course sandwiched between more exquisite starters and suites, making profit back on those extras and additional booze, a single glass of wine thereafter costing more than a parking ticket you would have got if you had eaten in Northampton. As I say the starters were good, well presented and flavored, around three quid each. The main courses were less sophisticated, the type of stuff that clatters on and off a service station rotunda, gammon and chicken burgers hardly cordon bluer. The salad vedge was so chunky and unoriginally served I could have made a face on the gammon, this kids menu territory. The sweet was a more superior fare, a choice of eight different ones, served in welcome big plates to suggest quality. But it's about value these days and feeding five people for £80 with two bottles of free wine is a cracking deal and the Halt is a nice, if formulaic, pleasant place to eat and enjoy those deals at. In the summer this place will be heaving, a pub fully geared up to holding on to its smokers with an excellent beer garden and heated outside areas, including stuff for the kids and the nearby reservoir bustling with wildlife making for pleasant evening walks with your lover. Like I say the pub is huge and has a games room and a lounge and bar for the locals, cable TV and two sets of toilets keeping the punters moving around the pub. The function room is big and the parking spacers even bigger, enough for 100 cars plus if you ask me. There karaoke and pub nights and so something for everyone. This is an old style family pub that has every chance of surviving this cruel recession that has seen 3 pubs a day close across the nation and 45,000 jobs lost in the industry since the smoking ban. In fact it's so keyed up it's even on wikipedia!

My only complaint was that it was pretty small and therefore a little cramped. However, one of the other members of my party had an unbelievably large room. I felt like you would need a taxi to get to one end of her bathroom to the other. Breakfast here was a real treat- plentiful and delivered with friendly service. Just what was needed for the members of my party and myself after a long day of champagne consumption. The price of my room here was not particularly cheap, however, I did feel it was representative of the quality and service that I received. It was most definitely worth the extra when compared to what the usual chain hotels in the area offer for the money. I would not hesitate to stay again here at the Hopping Hare should I be in the area again.
