Ice crystals in my chocolate ice cream cone at 1:15 this past Wednesday left me very disappointed. Actually, this was the second time here that this happened. The first time I ate the cone but regretted it afterwards thinking it was a waste of calories. This time I went back to the site- with cone in hand-and told them I wanted a refund due to the poor quality of the custard. I received a complementary free ice cream card instead of a refund which I was ok with. Honestly, when you pay over $4 for a small cone, it better be perfection. Also, there are several other ice cream locations in that vicinity so Whit's needs to get it together or people will go elsewhere. read more

I'm not sure if the hours are wrong or what but every time we have tried to go to sever locations they are closed. of the apps and on their websites it says "open everyday until 9pm) and yet today when we tried to go (we arrived at 8) it's closed. last time we tried it was 6:30pm and again it was closed.. I absolutely love soft serve. I have to admit, I find their prices a little expensive, but they are comparable to other ice cream shops in the area. The location is right off the side of the road, but has a cute little outdoor seating area and is dog friendly. During the summer, my dog and I would go hear to enjoy the sun and a yummy treat. The staff are always friendly and loved seeing my dog. He would sometimes get a free treat! A way to get a cheaper whitser is to order the flavor of the weak or day! The scoops are cheaper than if you make or order your own. I highly recommend this place. Also, I keep tabs on the best things I've tried throughout Columbus so far and their german chocolate flavor made the week. CREAMY. That's the word that comes to mind when reminiscing on my experience at Whit's. After an epic dinner at Hot Chicken Takeover in Easton, we were looking for something sweet and cool to contrast the spice and savory flavors. While the usual suspects (Jeni's, Graeters, and Shake Shack) emerged in conversation, we ultimately decided on the Gahana location of Whit's. I consider my brother in law and sister experts on ice cream/custard and hold their opinions in high regard. Especially given that the former is from Wisconsin. They chose another winner. This place's menu is seriously ginormous--tons of specialty creation and topping options. They always have vanilla and chocolate custards, then flavors of the week. This time, those were caramel cookie dough and birthday cake. I chose one scoop of the caramel cookie dough in a cup. Divine. Super creamy and smooth. Decided to stop at Whit's for a treat. This location has a private parking lot, a drive thru, and a walk up window. They have a few picnic tables out front to sit and eat. They've got a good sized menu with DIY whitsers(their blizzard equivalent), specialty sundaes or whitsers dependent on location, a kid's menu, shakes/malts, and more. They also have quarts of custard for sale. This location has 2 weekly flavors! I tried the mini Cookie Monster whitser and substituted hot fudge for the chocolate syrup. It was delicious! The hot fudge took it to the next level, highly recommend. The mini size was not small at all. Definitely a big portion of custard for the price. The workers were nice and service was quick. They do ask if you want to add a tip to a credit card payment. Overall a great experience though, will definitely be back to try more of the weekly flavors! read more

Where do I start with Whit's...I just love so many things about them! We enjoy going and sitting on the patio in the warm-weather months, the service is generally top-notch, and the frozen custard is better than anywhere else we've had it. The Gahanna location has something called a 'lion sundae' that my four-year-old absolutely loves. I usually get an Oreo milkshake or Hawaiian lu'au Whister. They have whipped cream, which she wanted. And two kinds of cherries- luxury. She got maraschino, and there were a ton on top of the custard and under the whipped cream. She was happy. I got a root beer float- and forgot they have their own root beer (made for them in Cleveland, but still.) The root beer itself is good-not-great. But mixed with their custard it's a very good float. We went to Witt's yesterday and spent right at $15:00. Both the banana split and the sundae that we purchased were liquid. It was a take home order. This is a great location! You can do walk up or drive thru, and they have a really nice seating set up out front. There's a patio with umbrella tables, as well as an area under shade where the walk up windows actually are. There's a stone counter with stools there that is fun to sit at. Menu-wise, they have a lot of fun choices featuring their custards, including cups, cones, shakes, and more. The sign indicated that they regularly have vanilla and chocolate custard, and then they have rotating weekly flavors that you can check on their website. The kids cups were adorable - they have happy faces, lion faces, and options with gummy worms. It was too cute. My kid went with the Dirty Worm kids cup, which featured gummy worms and crushed Oreos on top of the vanilla custard. It was much enjoyed! There is parking available in the lot, though I wouldn't be surprised if it filled up during busier times. My daughter and I decided to check out Whit's after a fun girls' day at Easton. We pulled into the parking lot, bundled up, and braced ourselves for the cool temps as we walked to the carry-out window to place our order (they also have a drive-thru, but I wanted to take advantage of some cool photo ops)! My daughter ordered the Happy Face Sundae and I ordered two scoops of Butter Pecan ice cream in a Waffle Cone. Butter Pecan was the flavor of the week. I am not sure what the flavor of the week entails (discounts or what not), but my ice cream was really good either way. My daughter and I both really enjoyed our ice cream. It was super smooth and creamy! My two scoops were way too much for me - I would definitely suggest sticking with one scoop of ice cream. I thought that the Happy Face Sundae was so cute! They used sprinkles as the hair, candy eyes for the eyes, cookie dough for the nose, and a gummy worm for the mouth. My daughter and I thought that it was the cutest thing ever. We will definitely be back soon! I just found out that we have a Whit's closer to home (Canal Winchester) too - so we might check that out too! read more

I love frozen custard. Whit's is the best frozen custard shoppe in Central Ohio. That said, it's not the best frozen custard shoppe ever--doesn't even come close. I am a St. Louis girl at heart and while Whit's is good, it will never be as good as Ted Drews in St. Louis. Last time I went to Whit's I had to wait in a very long and VERY SLOW drive thru line. It took at least 45 minutes from the time I entered the line to the time I got my order. When I got my Whister, I was disappointed because about 3/4 of the way down it was all vanilla custard. They didn't mix it all the way through. That was a major bummer. My thing is, if you do one thing--do it well. Whit's is good, but it doesn't always do my custom Whister creation well. That said, it is the best custard shoppe central Ohio has to offer and I will back back again soon, but don't judge custard shoppes on a whole by Whit's--that's not fair. My first time stopping here. I've driven past it a million times. I was craving an ice cream cone and what's better than ice cream... Frozen Custard. I went through the drive thru. No one was in line or behind me. There's a recording that comes on and tells you what the flavors of the week are. The woman on the speaker was super nice. I told her it was my first time and she went over the whole menu with me. That's not something you normally get in the drive thru. I went classic with vanilla and a chocolate dipped waffle cone. I have driven by Whit's a couple of times but never thought to stop by and try it. Maybe it's because I was trying to avoid eating too much sugar in my diet. So today I finally tried it.My sister brought it from here and we had the pumpkin pecan and iced sugar cookie flavors. They are so rich in the custard flavor. It paired really well with the cake we had. Another great thing is they have a drive thru so if your feeling lazy you can just go through that and pick it up there there. If I'd had Whit's custard before, I don't remember, so I had to give it a shot. My buddy's been going to Milwaukee a lot and has become obsessed with frozen custard after trying Kopp's. We had gone to Culver's, and it was pretty good, but we wanted to check out this local chain that had originated in Granville. The Whit's over in Gahanna is a pretty easy place to get in and out of, and they were were pretty quick with our order, even though the lady in front of me with her kids was ordering as if she'd never seen ice cream or hot dogs before. The guy working the counter didn't really seem like he wanted to be there, but whatever, I'm just interested in the custard. I went with the Buckeye custard which had all kinds of peanut butter swirls, Reese's cups, and other peanut butter flavorings in it, and it was pretty damn good. My buddy had a chocolate custard with M&M's, and he said it was pretty tasty but not quite as good as those he'd had in Wisconsin. They offer the vanilla and chocolate all the time, and they usually have one or two flavors of the week that they rotate out and are listed on the website. You can also get hot dogs, pulled pork, and pizzadillas (whatever the hell those are) if you're looking to actually grab lunch along with your dessert. I haven't tried those yet, but I may give them a shot at some point. I picture Dairy Queen dogs and pork when I read the menu, so I'm not in any hurry. If you're looking for some high quality frozen custard in Columbus, Whit's has to be the primary spot at the moment. read more

I had a vanilla vegan malt since I have a hard time digesting dairy, and it wasn't bad. My boyfriend had a sundae and enjoyed it. Overall, we both felt Whit's was your average local custard spot and left a little to be desired. The customer service was lacking a little as the cashier and one other staff person could not answer my questions about the vegan options. I've been here twice now in the past week and, while the frozen custard creations are still excellent, I've yet to experience the eureka feeling I got with my visit to the central location. How have I lived in Cbus for nearly 10 years and never tried Whit's?! Clearly I'm an idiot. I guess I forgot how delicious custard was until Jeni's recently did a small batch of salty vanilla custard, and I couldn't get enough. So smooth, so creamy -- and really unlike ice cream. And since Jeni's doesn't carry custard most of the time, I had to find another place to get my fix. Enter Whit's... I went to the Gahanna location since it's closest to me, but I've passed by the other stores too -- and they're all really cute and clean. The Gahanna location has a drive-through, which would be a big plus now that I've been once and know what I'm doing. But for the first trip, I walked up to the counter so I could taste a few flavors. That particular day, they had sea salt caramel, which totally beckoned me. See, I'm not a Jeni's salty caramel fan (shh... don't tell her), but I love the flavor of salted caramel. Whit's version did not disappoint. It was salty and creamy goodness! I paired it with traditional vanilla, which was also delicious. The folks working appeared to all be teenagers, so you kinda know what type of service to expect. I hate to stereotype, but in this case -- it was true. They were friendly enough, but the five of them (Five employees! Working on a Monday night!) definitely seemed more interested in gossiping with each other than helping customers. But whatever... they were fine. Whit's has two rotating flavors each week, and they always have vanilla and chocolate. And if you're craving a past week's flavor, check out their freezer to see if it's still around. If you haven't had Whit's, you should totally give them a chance, but prepare yourself -- it's not ice cream... it's custard. Fabulous custard! My first visit to Whit's was at the Westerville location at the suggestion of a friend. The things I love about this Gahanna location are 1) they have a drive-thru (get your custard quickly and often!) and 2) they seem to have more special flavors available. Chocolate, vanilla, and flavor-of-the-week are the standard selections at Whit's, but the sign in front of this location usually lists an extra flavor. And who doesn't love more choices? You can get toppings and add-ins, but honestly the custard doesn't need any help. It's so delicious as is, you might as well save your money and just buy the scoop. read more

If Jeni's is my happy place, Whit's is my close to home guilty pleasure happy place. The custard is amazingly creamy and delicious. They have the standard vanilla and chocolate, then each week there's a magical new flavor of the week. (The week they had Almond Joy was an incredible week. Oh goodness. Toasted coconut custard with chocolate and almonds.) But don't think just because there are only three flavors available that your options are slim. They have a long list of sundae toppings and you can make your own sundae or choose from their list of pre-imagined concoctions available in standard sundae form or as a "Whitser" (read: Blizzard). I'd do the math and tell you how many possible combinations there are, but my TI-82 is out of batteries. My newest discovery is a single scoop chocolate custard sundae topped with hot caramel sauce and almonds. Mmm mmm good. Bottom line is, Whit's is some solidly good eats. Whit's is an amazing place for after dinner dessert in the summer! As proudly displayed, Whit's serves frozen custard, not ice cream. Some of the other reviewers mentioned that most people won't notice a difference between frozen custard and ice cream and I find this to be true. Whit's says frozen custard is served warmer than ice cream, but the mouth-feel is almost identical. The menu is impressive and extensive, with many of the familiar "Blizzard" style shakes and sundaes. My absolute favorite is the Gahanna Turtle Sundae. It can feed two, so take it easy! One tricky thing about Whit's is that they have weekly (and sometimes daily) flavors. You can check either the Whit's website or a chart at the actual location if you want to schedule your visit around a particularly compelling flavor. Why not 5 stars? Whit's uses some slightly misleading advertising. They say all their custard is "90% fat-free!" First, this is roughly equivalent to normal ice cream. Secondly, eating anything that's 10% fat is fairly unhealthy. Assuming 1 serving is 100 grams (which is a very low estimate), that's about 20% of your saturated fat and 15% of the RDA for total fat in a day. Neither ice cream nor frozen custard is health food! Advertising aside, the custard here is amazing, and I wish I had written this review while they were open because now I have a serious craving that Breyers just ain't gonna help with! read more

But when I leave you each, I leave with half (of my daily calorie intake). In all seriousness, this is some damn tasty goo. It's a little shop like an old DQ from my youth -- service counter with a couple tables out front and a big illuminated sign out front that advertises the flavor of the week. So it's good a good nostalgia factor of post-soccer dessert stops from my youth. Not only will I not try to compare my two favorite dessert stops in town (Jeni's and Whit's), I will say that they are truly 100% completely different -- ice cream vs custard, crafty/unique flavors vs traditional awesome classic flavors, even more of an urban vs suburban kind of slant to the whole business. You can get your custard scooped into a dish or cone (sugar or waffle), or they offer various sundaes and what they refer to as "Whisers" (psssttt...it's a Blizzard), custard with mix-in ingredients. The Gahanna Turtle Whitser is pretty fantastic. They serve burgers, fries, dogs, and a couple other hot offerings, but I'm not sure why -- they have frozen custard here. Seriously.
