This shop fits in perfectly if you're looking for the Mayberry experience in downtown Mt Airy. After exploring Main St we dropped in to Whit's for some creamy custardy goodness. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to ice cream so I ordered a small cup of vanilla w whipped cream on top. It was refreshing, didn't melt down too quickly and had great taste. There were alot of people stopping in for their treat. Whit's has a big menu at their entrance to get foot traffic. Since the shop is small it was smart to have the sign outside so people could have in mind what they wanted before they stepped inside. It cuts down on the overcrowding inside and allows the line inside to move quickly. I got my ice cream after a small wait and took it outside and sat on their bench to enjoy the weather. So good. We decided to take advantage of unseasonably warm weather and drive up to Mt. Airy. We usually visit during special events, but today was quiet and very relaxing. On a whim, we stopped in at Whit's and I'm glad we did. Very nice lady was manning the store by herself and was as pleasant as could be. We opted for banana splits, a bargain at 7.50 each. Great little spot on the Main Street. If you are from out of town - this is a custard chain. This is their smallest location but it's the same custard as their other locations. I love custard - had the fluffer special today. They also have things similar to a blizzard where you pick the topping. Crew here was all a smile and it's a quick stop to be out the door with icecream. Best on street. read more

This was my first time ever having frozen custard and it definitely won't be my last. We tried the vanilla, chocolate, and the favor of the day which was my FAV butter pecan. The frozen custards are gluten free but always double check about flavor of the day. The staff is super helpful with allergens. This location had two small tables so not much seating but there are benches out front if you're down to sit outside. I finally decided to stop in and try the frozen custard here after having several disappointing frozen treats at other places on Main Street, and I won't be going back to any of those other places again. What Whits' lacks in flashy and old school Mayberry storefront appeal it more than makes up for with genuinely delicious frozen treats. What knocked a star off for me was that the ambiance is pretty lacking and there wasn't really seating available inside, but those are honestly the only things I can fault them on. Inside is overall pretty small with a counter and the menu on suspended boards over it, a freezer full of premade frozen custard to-go, and some merch thankfully out of the way. It's simple for what it is, and the menu is visible and easy to navigate which makes the simplicity kind of work. This business is also set apart by the fact that they stay open longer than a lot of places on Main Street, and if you're out after dinner or for an evening walk you can pop in for a really nice treat. So again you aren't paying for atmosphere but more for convince and a quality product. So admittedly I had never tried frozen custard before coming here, so I can't compare it to other frozen custard places, but I can definitely compare it to other frozen treat options in the area. When you come here, you can see the machines they're using to make the custard, unlike almost everywhere else on the street that serves ice cream out of a commercial 3-gallon container. That alone to me resonates that they're putting a lot of effort into the product, and after my first bite I can say for certainty it shows. I got a cup of their plain strawberry, which had strawberry bits that tasted fresh not like freeze-dried hunks of sweetness, and my friend tried their vanilla with cookie dough, and it was a good amount of cookie dough for the price. If you haven't tried frozen custard before, please remedy that because I was blown away by how much smoother it was without being overly heavy, and how much better the flavors carried through. The only flaw Whit's frozen custard has is that if you're walking down Main Street on a warm day with it, it will start to melt quickly so you're racing the clock a little. As far as the price goes most people will spend at least $3-4 on a treat (aside from the kid's menu which is a little less), but even their specialty sundae options are only $5.50 tops. It isn't the cheapest option in town, but the prices are still really reasonable, and everything I've tried has absolutely been worth the price. What I also really love is that they are constantly adding something new and/or seasonal to the menu. They're also super cool about free samples! I can also say that it really has something for everyone, you can keep it simple or try something new every time you visit. Seriously, they'll put the frozen custard in coffee or slushies and I seriously can't wait to go back and try both! Another big seller for me is that it may be a chain, but it's still locally run and fits the small-town family business scene for the area. Customer service has been great, and it's been nice meeting a local family invested in bringing something new and delicious to Mayberry. Overall, the business is likely not fully recovered from COVID, but as they get back on track I hope to see them improve the customer experience a little more and invest in some curb appeal and branding. No matter what though, they have an unbeatable product, and I hope locals and visitors alike give them a try (and get just as hyped as me to return)! They're officially my number one recommendation to anyone hoping to get a cool treat when visiting downtown Mayberry, and as much as I hope this review convinces some people to try something new, there's no substitute for heading in and trying it out for yourselves! read more

I've been several times now and everything was amazing, last time I got strawberry ice cream with cheesecake bites,best in town. Love it.

I love different and Whit's fills my desires. The hubby had the special of the day - apple cake, vanilla custard and caramel sauce. He was more than happy with his choice. I would say thrilled is a closer description. I went with the old standby of chocolate, caramel, and pecans. The pecans were whole and fresh - a pleasant surprise. I got the mini and simply couldn't eat it all. I recommend stopping by Whit's. The menu has something for everyone and I doubt you will be disappointed. read more

The Custard here is spectacular. Very smooth as custard should be. I got the flavor of the day, "Buckeye" it was delicious.

We go here all the time. So friendly. Delicious!!!!!!! And convenient. We get the Apple blitz usually. They also have to go custard in little containers inside. We get these as well. Definitely worth the price. Love the workers there. read more
