I stopped by after they had been open for about two weeks and was impressed by the sheer number of offerings: breads, cookies, cupcakes, pastries, cheesecakes, quiches, coffee, tea, and more. The employee on duty was patient and helpfully explained a few baked goods I hadn't encountered before (Kouign-amann will have to happen during a future visit). I ultimately settled on a peanut butter-banana coffee cake and a chocolate croissant. The croissant was buttery but dense rather than light and flaky. That density extended to the coffee cake as well, where it was more welcome. The peanut butter-banana combo made for a winning pair, and the topping was tasty as well. Given the pricing, service, availability (open every day except Sunday), and more, Rocca's is a must for anyone in Greensboro with a sweet tooth.

But, I do need to advise anyone who is unwaveringly accustomed to the Italian and Portuguese bakeries of New England (at least in the 1980s), and similar places, the pastries here aren't quite at that level. The pastries I tried were a little dense and shriveled, with a slight sour taste (which could've also been due to some uneven baking, erring on the overbaked side). In an apple filled item, the small amount of apples weren't quite soft and sweet enough, as well. Overall, the pastries were nearer to those of a very talented home baker than the polished work of a traditional professional pastry shop. Of course, for this specific region, this will be an enjoyable stop. With that in mind, I'm not surprised there are long lines; it must be very exciting to encounter a shop like this for the first time. There are very few other bakeries making pastries of this type, much less good ones. It's very, very hard to make excellent pastries. But, if you come from a land rich with bakeries, just set your expectations appropriately. Plus, there is the critical difference between New England and North Carolina bakeries: Would you rather have pastries that are sensational from sullen and unpredictably snappish people? ...or pastries that are decent and charming from laid-back and friendly people?

For that reason alone, I'm glad that Short Street has entered the game. Across two visits, I've spied everything from sourdough to harvest bread to marbled rye to challah. However, there is far more on offer here than just bread. Short Street has quite a few cookies, cakes, scones, and croissants as well. It occupies a small - or short, if you prefer - space, but it packs a lot of (constantly changing) inventory. It also helps that the folks working here are personable and patient. Everything I've tried so far has been a hit. The marbled rye was thickly sliced and made for a sturdy sandwich bread. An apple spice cookie packed in plenty of apple flavor while a red velvet cookie didn't skimp on the chocolate chunks. I can't attest to their grab-and-go options, but for sweet treats, Short Street is hard to beat.

The location is very parking friendly and it's easy to navigate. The location was a bit busy when I went, but the staff was completely unphased by it. They got us in and out without sacrificing great customer service. This location is spacious and would be great to drop in and work because they have a coffee bar inside. I got a slice of caramel cake and a double chocolate walnut cookie, which didn't even make it out of the parking lot. It was so good in fact, I contemplated going back in to get another one. The price point was reasonable and based off the quality of ingredients I would say it's definitely worth it. I'm glad there's a location closer to me and I'll definitely be back.

We stopped by their soft opening this week and everything was outstanding. The original High Point location is solid. It's very convenient to have one on the north side of Greensboro up here in Summerfield. The set up is super cool. It feels like you're in a baker's kitchen. The cabinets, countertops, and overall decor give it a homey feel. I spoke with the owner, who mentioned they're still getting everything ready and don't have all the options out yet. But even today, the selection was already huge: pastries, cakes, cookies, ice cream, ice box cakes, macarons, you name it. Plus a full lineup of coffees, both seasonal and classic. We went with a magic bar and a seasonal pumpkin blondie, both moist and super flavorful. Everything is made in house and completely from scratch. Coffees were delicious as well. A macadamia nut decaf latte and a banana bread latte, both tasty and mixed perfectly. Service was super friendly too. What was really unique is that they asked whether we preferred a crunchy end piece or a soft inner piece. A really nice touch. Since we're right around the corner, we'll definitely be visiting often whenever the sweet tooth strikes. Whether it's for a cozy breakfast and coffee or an afternoon or after dinner dessert stop.

The cases were filled with great choices at excellent prices, much lower in cost than some other bakeries we have been to in the area. I was very tempted to get some of the banana pudding cake...you heard me, but I got a cherry turnover since it is a personal favorite of mine. It ended up being breakfast but the crust was buttery and flaky and the cherry filling was sweet and tart at the same time....so good. The shop itself was cute with some tables and it was so nice hearing some of Robin's stories. I definitely recommend coming here and picking up some treats. The prices, selection and service made Kings my choice for baked goods in the Triad.
