I have been seeing Dr. Thissell for a number of years, and he really is the best chiropractor I have worked with. He's very attentive and knowledgeable, and loves sharing his knowledge to help patients feel their best. For me, he does a combination of traditional adjustment & pressure point massage in the trouble/tight areas, which helps a lot with the lower back, hips & shoulder areas. He also teaches me stretches & daily habit improvement tips to target the specific problem areas. Once I had a very bothersome pain in my left shoulder blade area and it only took 1 session to feel major improvement. I cannot recommend Dr. Thissell enough. read more

I've been into Whole health twice now, and will be making this a regular thing for the next few months! I've never been to a chiropractor before and this place was great for a first time experience. The intake session, which was about 45 minutes long, involved an examination of the spine, posture and muscles. Judah explained thoroughly - maybe too throughly(!) - the difference between my alignment and the standard, as well as the procedure that would get things into healthy shape again. I have been going to Dr. Thissell for a few years now and I would highly recommend him. I usually go 1-2 twice per month and I book through the online booking systems which is easy to use. Dr. Thissell takes the time to listen, is friendly and professional, and explains things in detail. He shows genuine interest in my problem and takes into consideration my lifestyle. He offers tips for brief exercises I can do at home and sends out emails with videos that I can do when traveling. I recently tried a telemedicine session with him for the first time and I was grateful that he was willing to offer this service online given the current situation around COVID-19 and the fact that an in-person session is not possible. The online session was very helpful as I was able to show him the areas that felt tight and he showed me on screen how the muscle works and his suggestions. It was the first time that I had an online session with any type of healthcare provider and I would strongly recommend it. It was seamless, through a secure platform, and everything worked out fine. I've been seeing Dr. Thissell for about 3-4 months after being recommended to him by a colleague (guitarist). Us musicians have lots of issues... My left shoulder had been leaning forward even when attempting to "sit up straight." Since seeing him I really feel like a brand new person. Things move more, hurt less and my back "looks" and feels so much better. He really makes use of every minute at the appointment and takes time to show you how to upkeep part of what he does at home by yourself. He also gives you a thorough explanation as to what is happening in your body so that you are much more aware of of it. I've definitely started to pay much more attention to it all and have tried to follow the stretches he recommends. Go to him. You won't regret it! Dr Thissel is the best! I struggled with a hiatal hernia and horrible digestive issues for 2 years before coming to see him. Within a month of adjustments I had got to the root of my problem in a way that countless doctors could not. I was initially skeptical about going to a chiropractor due to my colleagues' experiences, but my qualms were immediately assuaged the moment I walked into Dr. Thissell's office. He was incredibly accessible and responsive to any questions I had, and even recommended some home exercises I could do. Dr. Thissell is super, super nice. He is very knowledgable, and always makes you feel comfortable during treatments. I love having my neck cracked and immediately feeling better walking out of there. The reason I am only giving 4 stars is that he is always, ALWAYS running late, which is kind of a bummer when you pick a specific appointment time. Dr. Thissell took over 45 minutes with me on my first appointment to examine and explain to me about my spine problems. Appointments are super easy to make online and the location is very convenient, right on Newbury st. He is very nice and organized so overall it has been a pleasant experience receiving treatment from him. I think I have less shoulder pain after receiving treatment 4-5 times or so. Last week I had my first experience at a chiropractor's office ever and I'm glad I read other Yelp reviews and went to Dr. Thissell. From the moment you walk into the office he will make you feel welcome. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his practice. During my consultation I explained my reason for my visit which was honestly mostly curiosity and quite simply wanting to feel good. Don't think that you need to be in a car accident to visit a chiropractor. It can be so beneficial to know about your body and learn about some of the subconscious habits that can be causing us to be misaligned, for example sitting at a desk too long or leaning forward from texting too much. After an exam Dr. Thissell was able to pinpoint where some adjustments could be made. He incorporated some deep tissue massages to remove knots that were in my shoulder and neck. I walked out of that office feeling really good and look forward to future appointments!! read more

I'm so glad I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Thissell, because not all chiropractors are created equal, and it's great to meet one of the really good ones. My daughter found him after she moved to Boston, and she wanted me to see how good he was so I went with her to a visit. So this review isn't from one of his patients, although I do get chiropractic treatment myself closer to home. But if I didn't have my chiropractor, I would definitely use Dr. Thissell. Besides being very personable and pleasant to talk with, he is incredibly knowledgeable and extremely dedicated to his patients and his practice. I've only recently become a fan of chiropractic in middle-age, having experienced firsthand the benefits, and then learned for myself why it offers such benefits. I saw Judah for the first time two days ago and have already booked multiple follow up appointments with him. I must admit, I was a bit nervous for my first appointment as I specifically need neck work done and am very particular about who I allow touch my neck, understandably so, and he is also pretty young. However, after speaking with him I felt very comfortable. Judah is extremely knowledgeable in his profession and it is clear that he has a strong passion for the chiropractor practice. After discussing my issues, concerns and goals, he performed a consultation without x-rays, by solely watching the way my spine and body moved in various positions. He then sat me back down and explained what he determined needed focus and work in terms of my alignment. As mentioned in previous reviews, he used a rubber spine mold to create a reflection of what my spine looks like, and told me the exact issues I held in my spine in serious detail, as well as reasons why the spine ends up this way, etc. He then proceeded to walk me through exactly what he planned to do in terms of healing me, or cracking me, if you will. The work was great- he was very gentle and explained everything he was doing during the entire time. My neck felt amazing the next morning and my spine felt longer. He is the second chiropractor I've been in my life and aside from trusting him with my neck and spine, I specifically enjoy his ability to listen and not come off sounding like someone with a ridiculous ego. I practice yoga regularly and am very in tune with my body so I appreciate this. Can't wait for my next visit and to start seeing long term results! read more

This is only the second chiropractor I've been to but I do have a great deal of experience with massage and physical therapy. Judah is a friendly and knowledgeable person. I felt better after both visits and very much appreciated the descriptions about what is and is not going on with my body. Judah likes to integrate massage into his practice, which given how connected the skeletal and muscular systems are I appreciate. I have one slight criticism and one major one. The slight one is that Judah seems to rely a great deal on general, well-researched cases. For example when moving my leg backwards I am activating the muscles in my back rather than just using butt muscles. Judah said this probably means I have weak butt muscles. While generally true for most people, in my particular case it is pretty clearly not the case that my glutes are too weak. I simply am not using them as much as I should. The major criticism is connected with Judah's use of massage. While I appreciate it Judah does not have a degree in massage therapy and there are places where it shoes. For instance, when working on my neck he massaged the sides of my neck. As someone with some training I know that it can be dangerous to work on muscles in the neck other than the ones along the spine without proper training and asked him to stop. (The reason is mostly that there are a lot of small things in that area that one can mess up if they are not careful.) He also did not ask permission before working there, so for anyone whom it might be triggering for someone to hold you by the neck I would urge you to make that clear before a session begins. Besides that there was a decent amount of squeezing tender areas and trigger points which is generally pretty solid. The one criticism about that is Judah asked me to say when to stop increasing pressure. This was fine for me, however more pressure is not necessarily better and many people (especially those with high pain tolerance) will not say anything until too much pressure has already been added. I do hope Judah gets trained in massage therapy as I think integrating it into chiropractice is a very strong choice but he needs a bit more training before I can feel comfortable recommending that aspect of his practice. read more
