The CAT made it so easy to get to the airport from Vienna city centre and after disembarking we easily found our way to the bag drop area we needed. I was surprised and not used to the fact that they have their security screening at each gate, in the D part of the airport anyway. So no long queues at a single security point here. It's a good system. I found the girl at the shopping till to be rude to be honest. Her expression and reaction when we spoke English spoke a thousand words. When we paid she never said thank you. It's an international airport, love, not everyone will speak German. Even if you don't like people who don't speak German, then pretend you do, its your job. The toilets were a bit smelly and dank, but seemed clean enough. All-in-all, A-OK. read more

not a large airport, but a clean and efficient one. easy to get to the many mass transit options into the city proper from here - there's plenty of signs and documentation. what I really liked about Flughafen Wien is that it hasn't been overrun by the same American stores like so many other airports in Europe. yes, I know that any company that can afford to rent space in an airport is going to be a big corporation, but you have to appreciate that you get some more localized flavor beyond the obligatory McDonald's and Starbucks. getting greeted by the sight of Brezel Meister as soon as you get off a plane is a wonderful experience. read more

What is the key to a smooth travel experience. The answer? A happy airport experience. The Vienna International Airport is ideal! A quick taxi ride to the airport makes it accessible to the city center. Even via public transportation, the trip is under 1 hour which if your arrival is during rush hour, it may indeed, be the the better option. The terminals are walkable, and easy to find anything you need. There are a variety of cafes, and chocolate shops so you can pick up some gifts for loved-ones and/or indulge in the famous Sacher Torte one last time before leaving Wien! Austrian airlines, particularly was very helpful, and even when we had a few issues and seat concerns, they fixed them within minutes! One of the best experiences with airlines I've ever had! Lastly, if you are on an long/overnight layover, there are couches/beds you can fall asleep on which are intermittently spread out throughout the terminal! 5 stars for not having to sleep across uncomfortable airport chairs, or even on the floor! Between the beds, wifi and abundant charging ports, this airport is a layover haven for chronic travelers. Look no further, this airport is the bomb diggity! What are you waiting for? It's very clean, very open, and very modern airport-like. The only problem is that there are no United lounges!!! The SKY and Austrian airlines lounges don't seem limiting, but they are if you are a united or American Airlines member. Even if you have an Amex card, you have to be an austrian card holder... Otherwise, there are enough shops to satisfy expensive shopping needs, and everything runs pretty efficiently. read more

Best airport ever (@ least of the ones I've been to). Those who've complained about this place have never traveled thru/to JFK/LAX/Ohare (or any of the US airports for that matter). This airport is by far the cleanest (were in Wien obviously), easily navigable, friendly, well organized security, & quick to get to your destination. The CAT system is very convenient to get to the city center & even better, you can check in/drop off your luggage @ the CAT station before you take the train back to the airport. read more

What makes a 5 star airport? Modern, fully renovated and lack of lines definitely helps. Free strong wifi where most European airports lack this also helps. Vienna airport excels as an airport where you can quickly get off the train, through passport control and to your gate in no time. They structure the security at each gate while probably not the most efficient, cuts down on lines as you are only in the security lines with people at your own gate. The airport was recently renovated and very modern with plenty of shops to keep you occupied while waiting for flights. In terms of lounges, the Jet lounge, just past security control is also a fairly solid lounge if you need to pass some time. Free strong wifi is probably one of the most significant points of this airport and much appreciated. read more

I took an early flight out. Was dropped off by a private airport taxi service (unfortunately I don't know what company because I would highly recommend them. Cheaper and cost less than a taxi.) Arrived at 4:50 am. Checked in at a kiosk and then self checked my luggage. Was dreading the strip down, walk of shame, plastic bin process, but oh my! I practically walked right through (I don't travel with much, just a small bag with a mini computer.) I was at my gate by 5:10! Yep, you read that right. It only took me 20 min and that was with trying to translate signs!) Let me pause here and say a bit about self checking luggage. So civilized! It is just like using a kiosk to check in. Walk up to a machine, scan your boarding pass, put suitcase on the belt, it weighs it and then prints out the tag. Done! You hit the done button and the conveyer belt springs into action. Wait until the bag is gone (has to travel maybe 5 feet) and you are done. Was not a fan of having to walk through the duty free section. It was fun to look, but the smell of perfume was overwhelming. I swear there is no way I don't smell like a tart right now even though I wasn't sprayed directly. There are not as many sit down eateries as the major airports in America, but there are nice little cafés dotted throughout where you can get espresso, croissants and sandwiches. Walked by one bar, but it was closed. The bathrooms are okay. A little small ( meaning fewer stalls than in America), but otherwise fine. I wouldn't say it was super clean , but it was far from making my skin crawl. And now that my phone is dying I am going to take a seat at an unbelievably comfortable, private ( as in one seat only) recharging station and enjoy my last few minutes in Vienna. read more

Nice, somewhat newer airport. Security didn't seem to be a problem here and we got to our gate fairly quickly. They have plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, and of course, duty free shops. I would recommend getting to the airport only an hour before your flight as it didn't seem too busy and we traveled on Friday. read more

An A-OK airport - based on my very limited experience. Before you read this review, what you should be aware of, is that this is the first airport I have ever arrived in, and it is only the second airport I have departed from. If some of the things I mention sound silly or obvious, that is why, Arriving at the airport was not perfect, but relatively painless. It was stunningly clean, and of sleek design. Arrivals hall has the typical railing to separate arriving people from those waiting for them, and signage in this hall is pretty good; it is not overly difficult to find where the trains are, for instance. However, I did have a couple "issues" with arriving. First, depending on which terminal you land in, the sign may only say "exit" as opposed to "baggage claim", however, there is a picture of a suitcase on this sign, so it is not a terrible issue. Second, the passport control, as I remember it was one police officer sitting at a booth in front of a narrow corridor. It did not look like passport control in other transit hubs. Still the same passport control, just not as obvious as when you have many booths, queues, and so on. Third, when you get to the baggage claims, you need to put a deposit on the baggage trolley. They have change machines, but if the smallest bill you have is a 20 Euro note, you can't use the trolley. I get that in Austria it is extremely common for carriages to need a deposit, but not at an airport where people might not have the right coin, or note to be able to use this trolley. Departing was a little unusual for me. Before, I had thought that you go to the terminal, and this is where you have check-in as well as departure. However, if I understand correctly, here the terminals house the check-in counters, and the departures occur from the gates (which are separate of the terminals). Security here was painless, officers were very polite, as opposed to the curtness and or rudeness often attributed to airport security in other airports. My only other concern is that in the area where you have to wait, there are some outlets to charge your electronics, but there are very few, and at a standing table. Fast WiFi without limitations of time of megabytes. read more

Not sure if this is normal but the outside of the airport smells like sewage. The smell was particularly strong in front of the departure entrance for Austrian Airlines. The inside, however, is quite clean and lines weren't overwhelming long. I enjoy the little cubicles in front of the gates that you can sit and connect your computer to do work. I don't understand the positive reviews for Vienna's airport. Maybe it's because the rest of the Viennese experience seems so slick, ordered and well-designed. But for me the nearest comparator to Vienna's airport is the dated, facilities-deprived and rather small one in Hanoi. True, it's well-connected via the 12 euro, 16 minute shuttle. And it's got reliable wifi. But it still manages to mess up in completely unexpected ways: 1. Getting to the Check in desks from the train should be straightforward. Instead it proved to be a bizarrely long trek, sometimes outside, sometimes underground, and with plenty of bends and sharp turns. Very odd. 2. The security scanners are not grouped together for the benefit of all passengers but instead are each allocated to a departure gate. What? In all, very strange. I'm certainly been to better airports. read more

I'm in Terminal G for this review. First, your best food options seem to be at the beginning of this terminal. Otherwise, you're left with uninspiring focaccia options. However, if you're hungry, I encourage that you buy food before checking into Terminal G. For my connecting flight, I had to go through security again to get into G. The good news is that they have free wireless stations. There are these nifty 2x2 booths every 100 or so meters. More specifically, since I checked, they are at 3, 17, 31, 37 and probably their even numbered counterparts. These booths have privacy barriers so you can't see the people sitting next to you, but you can still watch the foot traffic. There are also these longer lounging sofas, so you can sleep on the lower or higher levels. Currently, there are a bunch of Asians that are sprawled everywhere. I've downloaded some Modern Family episodes, so I'm ready for the remaining 1 hour wait for my flight. read more

Very spacious and well laid out airport. It has been totally renovated since my last visit here about four years ago. In January, in the off season, there were no crowds at all. I had no problem navigating my way around, and there were no lines anywhere except for a small line at the Irvine check in. Security control was painless. After you go through security, there are adequate eating facilities in the C terminal that I departed from. There is also an express train called the CAT (City Airport Train) that you can catch at the airport that takes you to the Wien Mitte station, which is in walking distance of the city center. A round trip ticket on this train is 19 euros. Please note the validation of the tickets is done on the train by attendants. read more

This place sucks. It's disorganised and the signposting is appalling. The passport hall was chaos - no queuing here - and the ePassport was out of order. I walked along the entire baggage hall looking for the BA desk and found Airport information who said it was at the opposite end that I had just come from. This was a beautiful airport! I had a connection there on my way from Venice back to Phoenix. It made the beginning of my 27 hour travel not-so-unbearable. Yay - it's an airport. What to say? Having seen my share of airports, the Vienna airport isn't that bad as a lot of people tell. Yes it has it's share of problems: who was the genius that put the toilets one floor down to be reached by stairs? But it has it's benefits: fast, reliable internet, for free, without time restriction. Think that's normal? So do I, but travel around and you'll see different. Regardless if private or business, internet is a good thing to have. When arriving from a location outside of Schengen, it's generally preferable to queue at the EU counter at immigration (obviously, if you are from the EU). Even when the queue might look the same, normally no complex visa are processed there, so it should go faster. Should you have access to the lounges, which more or less automatically happens when you travel a lot, they are located just after passing security (Schengen) or immigration (non-Schengen). No flight announcements are made there, but there is free food and drinks and generally, a quieter place to sit and work or relax. I have heard mixed opinions about the city airport train, but as I haven't used it, I really can't say anything. I generally use other types of transport. Should you take a taxi to the airport and it isn't ordered as an "airport taxi", you are risking to pay an extra 15 or so Euros, for the return trip to Vienna. A quick call to one of the taxi companies will give you a fixed rate between 33 and 36 EUR for a trip and also make sure that you can pay with credit card. read more

The airport is clean, has a few eateries and ATMs, there are couches for those with long layovers, and there is an information office, but I've traveled widely in Europe, and I have never experienced such impolite and cold attitudes from staff. The woman at the TI office was rude, the bus/train booth was staffed by a cold, rude woman, Austrian Airlines ground staff was really aloof and cold. I was here on 4 occasions, and it just seemed as if there was a cloud of gloom here that continued to the city. No smiles. On Christmas Day, I felt cheerful, but I couldn't understand why staff was so unfriendly and rude. Maybe they aren't paid well enough? Maybe they don't like tourists, although we are spending so much money here. Maybe smiling is not a Vienna-thing. read more

Not my favorite airport in the world, but not the worst either. My biggest problem with it is the uncomfortable seating in at least one of the gate areas and the lack of things to do. I have had the unfortunate experience of having to sleep on the uncomfortable metal benches because I was stuck there for hours and hours. These are probably the most uncomfortable seating I have ever experienced. Also, at least in this gate area, there was only a lame, overpriced snackbar-like place and a bookstore of sorts. They have an assortment of travel books which seem fun, but you are NOT allowed to stand there and flip through them. During that one massive layover, I was shoo-ed away from there multiple times. Despite those negatives, this airport redeems itself with Cafe Johann Strauss, which is very charming, and I always make a point of stopping there - and the shopping area isn't bad. The bookstore is also interesting if they weren't so anal about letting you actually look at the books. I also found getting downtown to be very convenient. They have a bus that goes straight into the historic area parked right outside the terminal and figuring it all out couldn't have been simpler. A-OK. read more

Nice airport, w/ clean, interesting lines and a very nice staff. One man at the Lufthansa counter suggested I sit down while Alan transacted our business. This trip for the first time I have accepted wheelchair assistance after years of resisting it because airport walks have grown so long. A wheel chair was ordered for me and after a bit of a wait two nice young men arrived w/ it and my name and took us through customs and up to the lounge to wait until it was time to deliver me to the gate. Someone else did that, handing us off to someone else who put us into this very cool truck-like vehicle that took us directly out to the plane, the body of the vehicle lifting up until it was level w/ a ramp that I could use to walk directly into the plane. Most cool. The lounge had wifi that was free and easy to use and the airport experience was a good one. read more

I love this airport. It's easy to reach via bus or train even late at night or in the early mornings. No one would tell you that but if you fly with Austrian Airlines show the bus driver the boarding card and pay 2 Euro less per ride on your way to/from town. If you prefer the train (due to traffic during rush hour), go for the "normal" train, not the "cat". Both run on the same tracks and the cat is only about 7m faster, but will cost you double. If you prefer the "cat" nevertheless and will continue to your destination in the subway, buy a combined ticket (one way cat + one subway ride) from the cat machines at the airport. You won't save any money, but just a little time :-) read more

A big and yet well organized airport! The departures are split in 3 check ins area, depending on which flight company you are traveling with. Regarding the arrivals, there are only one exit, from which you can take the train (SBahn, 4.20€ to Vienna center), airport-train CAT (14€) or taxi. The grocery stores standing in the exit gallery (Spar, McDonald and co...) are open even on Sunday and till late at night so you can buy some food when you arrive! read more

The latest half-finished renovations at Vienna International Airport is a catastrophe. In the past, for all its failings, Vienna was a small airport that allows for a quick transit. After the renovations, all arriving passengers are routed through the new part of the terminal - which means for passengers arriving from the old terminal (i.e. non- star alliance) a long walk through underground tunnels to baggage claim. For departing passengers arriving via s-bahn, finding the appropriate check-in area would mean multiple trips up and down escalators, and weaving through the indoors and outdoors. The new and old parts of the terminal are still unconnected on landside, so again more walks for passengers. Free wifi is indeed a nice touch, but does not compensate for the lack of drinking fountains, poor choice of eateries, and poor seating. All in all, a work in progress. read more

Clean, easy to get to (CAT or S7 trains), good food and shopping services available, and convenient. The airport has decent connections to cities around Europe, plus some flights to Asia, the Middle East, northern Africa, and the Americas. The airport is rarely so busy that you have to wait in long lines and the at-gate security in some terminals is a really efficient process for the passengers. read more
