It doesn't look like there are many OSU students currently on Yelp, but in case there are, I wanted to take a minute and let you know about my generally great experience at the Student Health Center. I think people's expectations are generally low for a student health center, but I was always able to get appointments very quickly and, aside from one doctor, found everyone to be exceptionally friendly. The women's services doctors were really great - friendly, patient, understanding, never judgmental. If you have to have your first pelvic exam here, have no fear - you are in good hands. My first doctor (who unfortunately has since left) even went above and beyond to do a blood test to check my iron levels when I mentioned in passing that I was a vegetarian and recommended a multivitamin. Pat Balassone was always great - she did my pre-study-abroad appointment and was very thorough, writing out notes and making sure I had an epi-pen to take with me. Dr. Coleman, the allergist, was excellent and made pages and pages of detailed notes. He was a little slow, but nice and thorough. The dental providers were good too. Phlebotomists (who draw blood) were really friendly and the lab turnaround was very quick. Even though the waiting room is sometimes full, everything moves quickly. And once you leave Ohio State and move on to a new doctor, medical records cost $8 and they had about a week turnaround. If you have OSU's student health insurance, all you pay for is dental and specialist appointments. The pharmacy is cheap and pretty quick. The only downsides is the dated facility. But the quality of service makes up for it. And maybe someday soon, there will be a new facility. They can call me and ask for donations for that any time! read more

Wilce Student Health Center - Medical Centers Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

I am shocked that Wilce has so many low reviews. Compared to my (2-star at best) undergrad alma mater's health center, Wilce is amazing. Things that are amazing: -I don't have to wait 3 hours in a waiting room to see a Nurse practitioner when I have an urgent issue. You call the advice nurse and they schedule you an appointment, usually for a few hours later if you're in pain. I haven't tried to see anyone for flu-like symptoms, but I imagine that might take longer.. but then again, it's not as urgent as OH GOD I CAN'T WALK WITHOUT CRYING. -Beth Askew, the Certified Nurse Practitioner for women's health, is amazing. So are all the assistant nurses who take BPs and temperatures and what not. I love them all. I just felt so comfortable talking to her about all the issues that society has trained me to feel awkward about. One of the other CNPs, Li-Chun Liu, I was not as much of a fan of. -Dr. John Vaughn was AMAZING when I had debilitating lower back pain last February. He believed I was in extreme pain, unlike my undergrad health center who just told me I needed to relax (ugh!). I was able to see him almost immediately when I arrived barely able to walk. He gave me medicine, and when that didn't help at all, he was able to see me the next day and gave me something that worked: no questions asked, no judgmental behavior. -also related to the back pain incident, Physical Therapy is covered by health insurance! so now, I don't have as many back issues because I was able to take preventative measures. Yay! Pamela Bork, PT, was super-nice. -Dr. Salvatore Lowry, a dentist at Wilce, diagnosed a jaw problem I've had since I was 13 without me even asking. I'd honestly given up on getting any dentist to pay attention. This was just amazing. the hygenist was okay... but apparently if you go to the dental school they use ultrasonic machines instead of the horrible scraping metal devices used at Wilce. -the lab personnel are really nice. they actually care about their job, unlike 99% of the labs I've had anywhere else, ever. -the advice nurses are really friendly on the phone. they are friendlier if you have a flexible schedule during the day. they also did a good job helping me navigate insurance issues when my coverage mysteriously disappeared. -the pharmacy can be slow if you have a prescription called down after an appointment or if you walk in at lunchtime or at 5pm. otherwise, it's pretty fast. -I saw a student optometrist at Wilce which was a little annoying since I've seen ophthalmologists my entire life, but it was fine. A little slow since he was practicing out all his testing techniques, but I felt like I got a super-thorough exam and really, it maybe took like an extra 20 minutes. -the selection of glasses frames is underwhelming at Wilce, but the School of Optometry has a badass selection. read more

Ahhh, so many years I spent frequenting this health care facility. I was in college for a long time...haha. So, sometime during my tenure at OSU, the university passed a policy requiring all students to carry health insurance. If you can't or don't provide your own, you are enrolled in the university's insurance policy through tuition and fees. And while that insurance is probably about average in terms of coverage and what not, care at Wilce, at least for me, was always stupid cheap. I went here for everything, be it cheap condoms, the flu, a flu shot, physicals, check-ups, sinus infections, dentistry, my eyeglasses, etc. I can't remember ever paying more than maybe $70. In fact, if it weren't for the sometimes long wait times, and the not so fantastic hours (come on, university students have effed up schedules), I might have given the Wilce a four. read more

This is a review for Dr. Vaughn. If you go to Wilce, ask for him. He's AMAZING. Wilce overall is fine, I've only had one really terrible experience (with an NP who insulted me outright), but Dr. Vaughn is the best doctor I've ever had in my life, and I'm a girl with a lot of medical problems. Dr. Vaughn is completely non-judgemental. He understands patient care more than any other doctor I've ever had. I went in today basically to discuss my fears about having to see a neurosurgeon (basically every neurologist I've ever had is a complete toolbox), and Dr. Vaughn was happy to discuss these issues with me and reassure me that he'd work with me along with the neurosurgeon to get my proverbial ducks in order. I trust him completely and have always gotten sound medical - but more importantly emotional - support and advice from him. I'm usually uncomfortable with men doctors, but i'd take Dr. V. over any woman doctor any day. I wouldn't even consider asking for anyone else at Wilce. He gets more than five stars. Also, the process of being seen as a patient here, including prescription acquisition, is efficient and professional. It's clean, quick, and usually painless. :) read more

The office staff is usually slow and rude on the main second floor desk. I once sat there for an hour before going downstairs to ask registration if I had the day wrong, but they said that the desk staff had forgotten to check and see that I had signed in. This was laughed off because "it's Friday, looks like some people are starting the weekend early!" HOWEVER--the women's health staff is exemplary. Beth Askue CNP is so excellent that I shudder to imagine finding a new gynecologist now that I've graduated. She is truly concerned with all aspects of a student's life and will help you wade through the mountains of misinformation that are out there. She was the only practitioner on my health team that noticed a medication interaction that rendered my birth control ineffective; she offered to get me a counseling referral when I was going through a rough time--and she's just an all-around fun lady! Seriously. I put off getting a pap smear until I was 25 because I was so freaked--Beth made me feel safe and relaxed. I'd give her 10 stars if I could. read more

While the facility, as others stated before me, may be dreary and dated, the staff more than makes up for it. Reception is quick to answer calls and eager to schedule an appointment. Every time I've called in the past year, even in the thick of the H1N1 scares, I got in to see a doctor within twenty-four hours. Most recently I'd been suffering from swollen lymph nodes and a very sore throat. I got in to see Dr. Sheila Westendorf. Despite being understaffed with only one nurse, my appointment only began five minutes late. The doctor explored both strep and mono, taking a throat culture and sending me to the lab for blood work despite the wait for test results cutting into her lunch hour. Within a half hour I was issued a diagnosis, thoroughly informed of how to take care of myself, the drugs I'd be prescribed, when I should start seeing positive results, and what the next steps would be if I didn't start getting better within the prescribed period. The doctor was happy to issue documentation, talk to me about other drugs I was taking, and small talk, again, never giving me the impression that she was trying to hurry me out and then get lunch. With the exception of one doctor not prescribing a strong enough antibiotic and the dated, dreary facilities, I've had great experiences with the professionals here. My out-of-network insurance was forgiving and my schedule was always accommodated. read more

Got my flu shot here a couple years ago, and all went pretty well. Was a tad difficult to get the brand name of one of my medications, so I ended up switching to CVS Pharmacy. But Wilce satisfactorily fulfills its purpose; 3 stars. read more

Soo....I will now conflict Emily's review (instead of working on my 24-pg paper due tomorrow AM) Suck sucks sucks. It's amazing I'm still alive. Seriously. Highlights of the past 11 months on the Student Death Insurance Plan (which basically forces you to go here rather than to real doctors): -Got a voicemail the day before Christmas letting me know they found a tumor and needed to see me ASAP. After returning the phone call and even having the Dr who left me the VM listen to her own voice stating such....they said nothing was wrong, they lost my file, and had no idea what I was talking about. -Incorrect prescriptions - was given something that I am, and told them I was, allergic to -Incorrect Prescription #2 - was given an incorrect amount (short 5 pills) of a steroid to HELP ME BREATHE. As in..sorry, you ran out, now it's the weekend. Hope you don't die. Good luck...we're closed and no one except the pharmacy inside the Wilce center takes OSU insurance! -Ridiculous Pharmacy Policies - because I am not versed on generic names and signed for a 4 month supply of a drug, I was not allowed to return it EVEN THOUGH I WAS ALLERGIC TO IT. Rather, it used up my tiny prescription benefit -Want to make an appointment with a real doctor (aka specialist)? Hope you don't have anything serious (like a tumor??) because it will take the receptionist a MINIMUM of 1 month to call you back to actually attempt to schedule something -When I asked for a anti-inflammatory drug (for my RA), it was instead implied I have drug-seeking behavior and should take a Tylenol. Last time I checked...kids these days aren't snorting Celebrex for some sort of high. Gah. Now I'm all worked up again (guess I had better take a Tylenol?). I have many many more instances but these are the "high"lights. read more

This is the place to go if you're a sick OSU student. It's not the best place, but it's not so bad, either. It's located right in the middle of campus, so if you're a student living on campus it's really easy to walk to. But if you're driving, that's another story. It's really hard to get to. There is a parking garage near the building, but it's expensive and confusing. But chances are, if you're using this health center at all, you're a student and you live close enough that driving won't be an issue. I have been here on several occasions. Each experience was quite similar and pretty easy. I know a lot of people say bad things about this health center, but I really think that what they are able to do is pretty impressive. You can be accepted on a walk-in basis. I would always try to call ahead and get an appointment, but I've also been able to just come in and eventually see a doctor. I've never really had to wait too long, either. For as big of a campus as OSU is, it's great that they are able to take walk-in patients. They of course take the student health insurance, but I was also here under my family's insurance and they took that, too. So you can tell that they work with a lot of insurance companies because they understand that doctor bills just aren't in a student's budget. I don't remember all of the doctors that I had when I've come here, but I do remember Dr. Askew. She was always very helpful and sweet and I had the feeling like I could tell her anything without feeling embarrassed. She also really gave me her undivided attention, which I think is great in such a big health center with so many patients each day. She didn't treat me like some stupid college student; it was like she really cared about my health. As for the rest of the staff, I thought they were great, too. The nurses were always very nice - they would always perform the initial checkups before they took you to the doctor's office. The nurses were generally younger and they were typically OSU medical students who were kind of more on your level. I remember the waiting area had all kinds of magazines and plenty of seating. After you'd go in the front door and up to the front desk, you'd have to check in and sign your name and fill out a bit of paperwork. That was it! Then after the doctor would see you, sometimes they would write you a prescription. One particular time I had a very sore throat and went to the student health center and I called ahead so they were able to take me later that day. It always helps to call ahead because they are just so busy here. When I came in the doctor saw me and looked at my throat. Turned out my tonsils were infected. Awesome. The doctor wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic and told me to come back when the pills ran out. So I took my prescription and right downstairs before you leave, there's a pharmacy right there! It's so convenient. You don't even have to leave the building before you're all set with everything you need. I wish all doctors offices had a pharmacy. So I stopped there and filled my prescription. After about 2 weeks of taking my pills, I went back in to see the doctor. My throat felt better, but not completely. Turns out I had chronic tonsilitis. Double awesome. At this point, my doctor referred me to the throat specialists at OSU Medical Center - the big hospital! He said that they might be better able to help. I won't get into that visit because that was something different altogether, but I like how the student health center can directly set you up with certain doctors who are specialists at OSU Med Center. It really feels like you have unlimited medical resources here since OSU has such a big medical school and the hospital is so big. If you look at it that way, that the student health center is just an extension of that that is super accessible to students, it's pretty amazing. I don't know how well other colleges manage their health centers, but I think that the Wilce Student Health Center does a pretty great job of taking care of so many patients so quickly. OSU is one of the largest colleges in the country, so it's impressive that they are able to give such personalized attention to each student that comes in. They will also write you a medical excuse if you're sick and you have to skip class, but can't do it without an excuse. You can just stop in and they have people that can help you obtain one quickly so you don't have to be in the doctor's office all day. The greatest part about the student health center is that it is so affordable for students. Doctor visits are pretty much free with OSU's student health insurance. I never realized how good their insurance was until I got out into the real world and got my own insurance. If you're a student, use this resource! The pharmacy is also pretty cheap. If you do have to pay for anything (I believe you have to pay for the pharmacy right there at the counter), OSU will send you a bill in the mail. read more

It is well worth the $8 Uber to get medical treatment off campus. I've been here several times over my first year at OSU and the most recent visit has been one of the worst. I had a viral respiratory infection (which I only found out after my illness got worse and spread to pink eye and sought medical attention off campus) but they did not diagnose me with anything, rather they told me to keep taking Tylenol and Sudafed. The nurses and administrative staff are very friendly and helpful but the doctors are incompetent. I have yet to receive the results back from my strep test from the health center (I then had the test done at said off campus urgent care and actually received my results). I have also had issues receiving test results in the past. I have often had to call and check up on them because it turns out they simply "forgot" to send them to me. OSU is an amazing school but this is one aspect where they really need to improve. I would recommend Ohio Health Urgent Care in Grandview if you need to get something checked out they are MUCH more helpful. read more

Out in the real world and away from OSU health insurance I urge all students to take advantage of the services offered at Wilce. While a student at OSU I took the full advantage of my health insurance and saw every doctor I was allowed to see. Megan my optometrist was great and gave me two pairs of those fun little glasses as a souvenir. Dr. Askew was my gynecologist and I have never felt less uncomfortable discussing my monthly cycle as I did in her office. For general health, Dr. Ragnaswami introduced me to Chantix and got me to quit smoking. I even liked the guy who always took my blood. His witty banter helped me to forget that my blood was being slowly drained from my arm. The only negative to this plan was the dental clinic. Misdiagnosing a cavity that turned into a crown and scraping the soul away from my teeth, I felt rushed and overlooked during these appointments. After waiting a month for an appointment they tried to get me to change it the day before and I feel like my teeth suffered because I wouldn't be flexible. All in all I was impressed by the professionalism and degree of care I received at Wilce. I was there during a fire scare and watched as one staff member continued to quiz his patient during the time mandated that we stayed outside. I was blinded by eye opening drops and was impressed that not only was I gingerly led outside and back, but that someone stayed by my side during the general confusion. Some of the best health insurance I have ever purchased, OSU students should use it to their full advantage. Real world health insurance pales in comparison. read more

Overall, Wilce care is a good place to come to in case you need treatment or for yearly flu shots, although it's not outstanding or anything. I used Wilce care as a supplement to my primary insurance (I was on my parents' insurance) during my time at Osu and I would say that having both was an asset. The cost of Wilce care supplement was pretty affordable too. Wilce care is conveniently located on the heart of campus, near classrooms, the rpac and Thompson library, which made it easy to get to at any time. They renovated the lobby downstairs and it's nice and I often used it as places to study before waiting for my appointment. I would sometimes come to Wilce for doctors appointments but stopped as I thought my doctor was not very personable and efficient at her job. She's one of the main doctors (westendorf) and I often got the feeling that she thought I was making up my health issues as I frequently came in to see her with various ailments. She often seemed fed up and unwilling to help me although I'm paying for her services. All those "ailments" I had then have been formally diagnosed now and weren't in my head no thanks to westendorf. I actually avoided coming to Wilce care and opted to drive further to see a different doctor bc westendorf was not helpful all. The only doctor that was nice was Dr. Mary (I forget her last name) whom I had once bc westendorf was away. She's a blond older lady and very very sweet and nice and great at her job. I often asked to be switched to dr Mary or some other doctor but was told I couldn't. Later on I started coming to Wilce for immunotherapy. I was happy when I found out who my nurse was (Alisa) as I remember her being very nice when she got my vitals before I saw the doctor one time. She was very efficient at her job and would be patient when I expressed my concerns or when I had questions. She never seemed like she was fed up or did not want to help. She was great. I ended up getting to know her and after I graduated from Osu we became friends. I actually got to know a lot of the other nurses on that floor (Chris, Renee) and they were all super friendly to me and great. Overall, Wilce is not a bad place although it's not fantastic. The only other con is that the pharmacy can be limited in their stuff and in my Opinion a little overpriced. You can find the same over the counter meds at Walmart for a fraction of the price. read more
