Having been moving and lifting heavy things, we worried that it could be a hernia or appendicitis. We opted to drive 70 miles to avoid nearby more rural hospitals. We used to live nearby and in the past had rare but positive experiences with Mount Carmel. We did not have TOO long of a wait to get taken to a "room". But the room had no bed, remains of food and a bottle of urine. When staff interacted with us, they were friendly and seemed competent but interactions were so infrequent that we felt forgotten even though this was Saturday afternoon and the ER did not seem busy with serious cases. All total during a 6 hour stay, staff interacted with us for maybe 15 minutes. Can't you just poke your nose in and update us? We aren't demanding or difficult people. As luck would have it, the problem wasn't serious but it might have been and you are always scared until you get an answer. Another thing, when he had to go to the bathroom, the nurses station told me to ring for a nurse. How? I went back looked around the room for a call button. Eventually I found a gadget hanging behind his bed, out of sight, that looked like it might work. Shouldn't that have been handed to him with instructions on how to call for help when he was being hooked up to the monitors. And how do you adjust the bed? When we left, shouldn't they have told him, they were going to take out the needle. We thought we were on our own. Blood everywhere. At least on this day, Mount Carmel dropped the ball on patient communication. Parking though is free.

Of course, there is always room for improvement with anything. Everybody did the best they could with ever-dwindling resources. That means a lot! Every member of the nursing staff, dietary staff, medical staff, and billing dept should be applauded for their genuine efforts to make the best of a bad situation. Of course, there are ALWAYS things they could do better. Instead of focusing on what they did wrong, try magnifying what they did RIGHT! Proverbs 16:24 "Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." Proverbs 15:1 "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." The highest award a nurse can receive is the Florence Nightingale medal. No positive change was ever effectuated by hateful rhetoric. Just remember that a diamond is coal that survived the pressure...

Wildly unethical billing practices. They regularly bill "establishing care" visits (i.e. your first…read morewellness visit with a new primary care doctor) as non-preventative care, so that you have to pay your insurance a co-pay or co-insurance, rather than as preventative care. I called to dispute this coding and was informed that this is indeed how they bill your first annual physical. They also suggested that this was partly due to my reporting pre-existing conditions. This means that every first annual physical you do at this practice gets billed as non-preventative care if you mention pre-existing conditions. I have had multiple "establishing care" appointments with new primary care doctors and this is the first one that billed my insurance as non-preventative care. I don't understand why they would do this when they are getting paid by my insurance either way, the only difference is that I, the patient, have to pay almost $200 myself, instead of my insurance covering all the costs. It shows how little this medical practice actually cares about their patients. Note: This pertains to the primary care clinic in Hilliard, but I assume the practices are the same across locations.
