It's interesting that he's both a professional photographer and knife maker. I know a person just like that way back in my home state of Iowa - Cameron Sadeghpour of Lost Planet Forge in Des Moines. Sometimes a person's creativity travels to multiple interests. I have a habit of purchasing a knife from a country that I've visited. After poking around various Australian maker websites, I cam upon Phil's page and was drawn to the Pocket Folder Sassafrass, a one-off piece with scales from Tasmanian wood. It's a real beauty, and the fact that I'd had previous success with photographers who also make knives, I was in and quickly. I contacted Phil and after figuring out tariffs and shipping, this fine piece was in my hands in a short international while. Now that I'm looking more at Phil's website, I'm sorry his business wasn't on my radar when I recently visited Launceston. I'm intrigued by some of his books, and I bet Gayle and I would look good together pictured in black and white. Unfortunately for the later, a return visit is not on currently on our travel list.

On the corner of two fairly busy roads so it can be a bit noisy, but it's easy walking distance to the central part of Launceston.

The Old Bakery Inn advertises itself as "heritage accommodation" and that's exactly what it is…read more The building is fairly old and antique-looking, and situated in a central and convenient part of Launceston. The rooms are quite spacious for the price and feature insanely comfortable four-poster beds and surprisingly modern bathroom furnishings. The owners also have an adorable small dog that sometimes hangs out in the main lobby, and is super friendly and loves cuddles! (but be aware if you're allergic!) The major downside to our stay was that the advertising and the Inn's website led us to believe that breakfast was included in the room, but it was not. The breakfast served there is quite good, but for $17 per person, I have no doubt you could find better quality and a much lower price if you ventured out to a nearby cafe or bakery. Overall, a comfortable and reasonably-priced place to stay, central location that is within walking distance of several restaurants, pubs, and bottleshops, and classic, old-fashioned decor made for a very pleasant stay.

Bit student vibe at this one if I remember correctly or was it a local pub for local people? Either way Tasmanian's are refreshingly friendly and quite quick to get into a conversation with. I mean what more could you want for then a good chat with a few locals over some cheap drinks. I can't remember clearly whether this was the pub I was too terrified to drink in or not, all I have is that 3$ stubbies pic so I'm going to assume it was awesome and we'll let the next unfortunate yelper determine whether or not they escape with their life. I'm not sure what other…read moreoptions were available, but this Best Western was a solid 3 Star Hotel experience and nicely located in the central business district of Launceston. CONS On the second morning, the breakfast room was overrun by at least 3 tour groups (including ours). Seating poured out into the adjacent bar area. There was 1 coffee machine line, toaster selections disappeared onto the plates of other guests, and saved items at tables were moved off by other guests. Quite a scrum. =/- So So shower pressure Maybe a little street noise came in, but we also like fresh air. PROS Great Location Friendly and Helpful Front Desk and Bar Staff. Mornings 1 and 3 at Breakfast were much better, except for maybe the coffee line. Breakfast offerings were pretty good. Our bed was clean and comfortable, there was plenty of room, adequate desk space was available, and the WiFi was pretty good.

The first time we stayed here, the gentleman Manning the front desk was fast, efficient, friendly, and very helpful. Last night. However, when we tried to check in, the woman at the front desk got the same information checked us in I thought and then as I turned to walk away said do you want the second room as well? I looked at her and said what part of a single reservation with two rooms under my name. Did you miss? She goes well. Sometimes people show up later I said. Oh no! She's out in the car watching our stuff so it took more than twice as long as it should have and I didn't really feel like she cared at the inconvenience she was causing. All I can say is if you stay here, the rooms are clean, comfortable and quiet. But there's a high probability. You may not get a terribly intelligent person at the front desk
