The 15 gauge North Staffs Narrow Gauge railway has a cheerful set of volunteers running it - with some handsome locos. The circular track is a tad bumpy, but it all adds to the charm. Best days are when they have weekend galas a couple of times a year - with visiting engines - so more scope for photography. At holiday periods, there can be Punch and Judy and other entertainments, along with a large 'beach' area sand pit. Old tractors can be clambered upon in the farmyard area and the pigs, goats, ponies and sometimes cute Dexter cows can be admired or patted. This area is well-organised for hygiene too, with soap and taps. A party room is available for hire for younger children. I saw the inaugeration of the Playbarn - which was originally constructed by experts. It's far less boring than your generic Wacky Warehouses et al. My sons had lots of fun there when younger. Not sure if the mini tractors are stil available, as haven't been inside lately - but they were treated something like dodgems! Oh, and the bacon butties with a mug of tea/coffee are a really good deal at approx £3 each! The tiny sweetshop sells delicious, moderately-priced chocolates by weight and interesting sweetmeats, plus they take orders for the decorative, if pricey, wedding & occasion cakes. Amber is a main theme in the jewellery shop, with some gorgeous pieces for sale, along with silver and other metalware items. The proprietor sources most in Poland and they're excellent value for money. The owner does individual commissions and has another shop at Swinfen, outside Lichfield. Last time I was there, one could view and order beautifully made furniture too. Amerton Bakery makes and bakes on the premises - delicious traybakes, cakes and pastries, along with a great range of savouries e.g. pasties, portioned meals like lasagne, quiche etc. The bread and rolls are terrific - using a variety of flours, and there are loaf cakes of many types, plus scones and savoury pizza-like flatbreads. All at reasonable cost, although, I like to look for the 'guzoffas' first!!! More to follow about the outlets in Amerton!

Melbourne Pool is a brilliant place for a Sunday walk and great for families. It's free to park…read more(although can get busy so you may need to pay on a neighbouring street) and so essentially is a free day out, which seem to be few and far between these days. Take some bread to feed the ducks - or just stroll around the pool. It's not too far at all, and much of the way is concreted so you don't need wellies/walking boots etc. There's a tea room and a few little gift shops etc on site too.

We thought it would also be a great place to go in Summer with a big group of friends - as there would be nice places for bbqs A number of the cabins (ours included) had it's own sauna and spa bath which was fantastic. The other facilities were great in the cabin too - the kitchen was well equiped. It had a nice lounge area with DVD player, hi fi etc. Also on site, there is a nice pub and an indoor pool complex with health and beauty centre. There is also crazy golf, short tennis and tennis. You can hire equipment from the reception area. I think you can also hire bikes though we didn't do this. I would really recommend as it was great value for a short break and there are lots of places nearby worth a visit. Very relaxing place!!

If you are staying on the park everything costs extra, even the electicity for your cabbin. Best thing about Darwin is the location, in the middle of a wood it is beautiful, and the staff are always ready to have a chat and offer advice about the area.

It's a very slow river but deep in places so kids can't go in it. We were given a pitch on a field down the end but requsted to move, paid a bit extra and got a pitch next to the river. There's not a massive amount to do on the site, it's more a relaxing break. They have got a large field for tents but when we went it was empty so we could have a good kick about. You are set right in the middle of the countryside so there is alot of walking to be done. In the area is the Sherwood Forest visitor centre where you can marvel at Robin Hoods tree, Newstead Abbey, Mansfield town and more. A nice place to take you van for a break.

The rooms were very attractive, one was very large the other smaller. Bathrooms were attractive and facilities nice, although shower water pressure was a bit low. Otherwise, the rooms were very comfortable and nicely furnished. Everything was very clean. A nice living area with big windows was available for use. Breakfast was excellent, freshly made and we had a wonderfull cooked breakfast/Full English every day. It was excellent and plentiful. The owners were very nice and friendly. The onyl drawback was that it required driving on steep, narrow, twisting lanes up and down the hill. For us, that was a minor issue but it could be a problem for some. It also means that one cannot easily walk to anything in town from the bed and breakfast.

The facilites include lodges of various sizes for 2 people up to a maximum of 10. The lodges are fantastic, well equiped and very comfortable. However over the past 18 months or so they have introduced the 'Skyline' range which take it a stge further including flat screen tv's ion the lounge and master bedroom. Also on site is a pool with sauna and spa. We have holidayed here 5 times now and will go back again. For the kids it is one of the highlights of their year.

It's not far from Bakewell (2 miles) and a nice drive into Buxton (10 miles) and there is a pub in Monyash that has an outdoor childrens play area and really nice meals (2 miles) The campsite is fantastic for the kids as it is quite far from the road and you can let the kids roam and play without worrying about them wandering and there are some woods that the kids can explore in and enjoy themselves. At the far end of the camp site is a family only field that tends to be nice a quiet (ish) as the groups field is further away. In all my family love to come here, relax, walk and play and it's greta value for money.

Can get noisy at bank holidays but generally quiet and safe for children to play aound the site. They even have shetland ponies for the kids to stroke. The toilets and showers have recently been refurbished to a decent standard and is ongoing with its improvements.Nice and friendly owners. Tree swing for the kids which they seem to enjoy. Nice views of Lathkill Dale and pubs in the nearest villages of Over Haddon and Monyash. Bakewell three miles from the site and Buxton 10 miles from the site. Matlock and Matlock bath within easy reach as is Chatsworth house and Haddon Hall.Tissington trail not far away. Definately worth a visit. Good value for money.
