After a gap of some two years, I went to see Macbeth last night…read more I have been going to this theatre for some 23 years now, and, after a gap of some two years, walked into a time warp! In a good way! It retains it's young, vibrant and exciting atmosphere, making you want to visit just for a drink. The 'pub', now called Cast, has changed dramatically in its' decor since the late sixites but still buzzes with conversation. Shame about the 'music' - FAR too loud. Oh dear; am I getting old?! As for 'That Play'; well it was OK. The weird sisters were portrayed in a very interesting way but I found the acting in general to be rather over the top. But then I'm not an expert! And I didn't want to leave! xx

Tucked away around the corner up from a little side street off a busy main road in Nottingham is…read morethe magical and adorable Lace Market theatre. Run entirely by devoted volunteers, the theatre is committed to performing challenging and interesting plays, recently putting on the first ever showing in Nottingham of the Restoration Comedy The Rover. The theatre has a genuine and warm atmosphere of enthusiasm, with every single job, from lead actor to prompt, to costume makers, ice-cream sellers and set builders done entirely for the love of it. There's also a great little bar upstairs and the theatre is open on Saturday lunchtimes for amazingly cheap delicious home-made pub grub.

Shop in Nottinghams Victoria Centre and families will be standing around the clock in anticipation…read more When the Victoria Centre was built, it was decided to have some distinctive, preferably unique, feature which would provide a focal point. Rowland Emett, famous for his three-dimensional creations, including the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, was commissioned to make such a feature. What he called an 'Aqua Horological Tintinnabulator' stands at the south end on the lower mall and was specially designed to be visible from both malls and to provide constant movement coupled with the gentle sound of fountains playing. Four clock faces, 23 feet above the pool, are supported by a typical Emett moving world of silver squirrels, birds, butterflies, frogs, and a large sunflower. Each hour and half hour is struck on a bell whereupon the sunflower opens to reveal a sextet of bird and squirrel musicians who march in a circle, spinning round while the music is heard. I think it's greatI love Emetts work.
I was around when this was first built (sigh!) and loved it!…read more It was a firm favourite with my mum and with my children too. We would have to wait until it chilmed each time we went past it. We missed lots of buses this way! One of Nottinghams' better decisions it would be nice to think we could have some more sculpture around the town. xx
Excellent modern concert-hall on South Sherwood Street, not to be confused with the "Theatre Royal…read moreand Concert Hall." There's a possible confusion for visitors to Nottingham who are going to attend a concert at the Royal Concert Hall - because when you look it up here or on tripadvisor, mostly you will be directed towards the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, which is a historic theatre located just around the corner (namely, Theatre Square, Nottingham NG1 6LG). The one I'm talking about is the South Sherwood Street venue, which is a 1982 structure and used for classical concerts as well as any other kind of show (like e.g. the stand-up comedian Omid Djalili, who was one a day after the concert that I attended). The Royal Concert Hall boasts excellent acoustics - much better than e.g. those of the Liverpool Philharmonic hall - though not quite up to the fabulous standards of The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. But it's a better-sounding venue than ANY that you could find in the nation's capital! The sound in the classical concert that I attended (Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Nielsen) was superbly detailed and transparent even in row 4 (stalls). Too bad a city the size of Nottingham doesn't have its own standing professional orchestra. The amenities (bars, toilets, cloakroom) aren't all that great, but the hall itself is. You can always pop in for a pint during intermission at a good pub just across the street (Langtrys).
