Wilkes Park is a local green space in the Wilkes neighborhood offering a pleasant environment for walkers, families, and dogs on leashes. Be that as it may, the starred attraction in this park is the "Portland Loo" self-service restroom. There aren't a lot of public restrooms on the east side, so it's a welcome sight if you're out for a walk and can't make it home. Let's be honest, I'm in my 40's now... so I'm starting to appreciate simple things like this more and more!
The 2 acre site once served as a family homestead, as well as a garden center and nursery for over 20 years. In the late 1990's the property was developed into a community park featuring a large grassy area, slides and a swing set, as well as a 50 foot paved area for play.
There isn't a designated parking lot for this park, however there appears to be plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. The area feels relatively safe without a buildup of litter or tent communities that can be found in parks elsewhere in the city. read more
